The Jiang was saddened over the news, but none of them blamed Yang Yun for her disappearance. And that only made Yang Yun felt more guilty. As Mingyue's husband, he had failed to protect his wife.
Yang Yun returned to his chamber lifelessly and sat down on the bed. Looking at this room, Yang Yun recalled the first time he saw Mingyue in the room. She was dressed in red, with her head covered with a veil. A wedding attendant said something to him, and Yang Yun slowly lifted the red veil.
His wife was beautiful in the red wedding dress. When Yang Yun looked at Mingyue, everything else seemed to disappear, and only the two of them remained.
Yang Yun snapped out of his thought as he felt something around his leg. He looked down and saw Xiao Mi rubbing against his leg. Yang Yun bent down to pick up the cat, and Xiao Mi started to rub his head on Yang Yun's jaw as if to comfort him. The cat was obedient to him this time. Usually, Xiao Mi would stare at him as if Yang Yun owed him something.
"Meow!" Xiao Mi made a low sound.
Looking at Xiao Mi, Yang Yun's heart started to ache again. He patted Xiao Mi on its head and spoke in a lower voice. "She's gone, Xiao Mi. Mingyue is gone."
Xiao Mi meowed again. He continued to stare at Yang Yun as if to say something.
Most of the time, Yang Yun could not understand what Xiao Mi was trying to say, but this time, Yang Yun knew that the black cat was only trying to console him. He could only force a smile as the memories of Mingyue filled his thought.
The first time Yang Yun saw Jiang Mingyue, was at an army camp.
Yang Yun had joined the army for a year. That night, he was on guard duty. It was dark at night, and Mingyue was dressed in black, like a thief, as she tried to sneak in into the General's tent. Because of the way she wore, Yang Yun did not know that the intruder was a girl.
Before Yang Yun could react and warned the others that someone snuck into the camp, the General had shown up along with his right-hand man, Fei Liu. General Jiang Xiao Xian caught the intruder, and instead of punis.h.i.+ng this a.s.sa.s.sin, the General had informed others who presented that night to keep their mouth shut.
Yang Yun was confused over the General's order, but as a mere soldier, it was his job to obey without question.
Two days later, Yang Yun saw Mingyue again. She was on the training field among the recruit dressed in uniform. Yang Yun could quickly recognize her by her posture. When he first saw her face, Yang Yun thought that her skin looks too smooth, almost like a girl. However, Yang Yun had met a lot of people in his life, and he knew that it was not his place to critique her for the way they look.
When Yang Yun saw Mingyue on the training field, he had a.s.sumed that the General must have forced her to join the soldiers to train as part of her punishment for breaking into the army camp.
Looking at her small build, Yang Yun thought that there was no way that she will be able to survive the army. Her body was smaller than the others, and she does not have much strength. Jiang Mingyue took half an hour more than the others to complete their morning run, and she couldn't even complete the sit up within the time given.
But then, General Jiang Xiao Xian a.s.signed them to a combat match. Yang Yun was so sure that this recruit will fail miserably during her first match. Mingyue's opponent was twice the size of her. But he was caught by surprise when he saw her fight.
Jiang Mingyue might not be strong, but her movement was agile. Because of her small frame, it wasn't difficult for her to evade her opponent attack. Yang Yun watched the way Mingyue slipped around her opponent, evading her opponent's attack and taunting him for his slow movement.
Once her opponent was tired, she used that chance to tapped him on an acupuncture point behind his neck and soon, the opponent went down with a crash. He thought her martial art technique wasn't that bad. In fact, her movement was executed nicely. She didn't use too much energy to deal with her opponent. But the General did not share the same opinion.
Once the General Jiang Xiao Xian saw her on the training field, he was p.i.s.sed. The General grabbed Mingyue by her collar and dragged her back into his tent. Mingyue followed him without any complaint. The next day, the General returned to the city in haste. No one knows the reason, except for his vice general, Fei Liu.
Yang Yun did not see her again until three years later.
