The room was silent for a while.
"I heard you requested the same thing from Wei Wei," Chief Ye said. "I am very grateful to your sister as she had saved Wei Wei's life. However, I cannot help you in this matter."
Princess Lingchen stepped before the old lady swiftly and knelt on both knees. Instantly, the room filled with sounds of gasp. However, no one dared to step forward to help the Crown Princess up.
"Chief Ye, if there is a way to save Mingyue, you have to help us. I will do anything within my capabilities."
The old lady sighed and helped the princess up. "Please Your Highness, don't do this. You must never forget your status. If others know that you have lowered yourself like this, wouldn't this get me killed?"
The Crown Princess rose up. She did not give much thought of her action. She had acted on impulse when she heard that there is hope to bring back Mingyue. After all, she had grown up with this cousin, and Mingyue was very important to her.
"It's not that I did not want to help you," Chief Ye said. "It's just that I cannot help you. If you had made this request before our tribe was forced to live in seclusion, then I can probably help you. Back then, during the war between our clan and the imperial family of Sui Country, the portal was destroyed."
…
Yang Yun arrived at the military camp early in the morning. Once he told his reason to visit, a soldier then escorted him towards the young general tent. Just as the soldier was about to walk in and announced Yang Yun's arrival, Yang Yun stopped his movement. Then, he placed his forefinger on his lips, a signal for the soldier to keep silence.
"What is it?" the soldier asked in a hushed voice.
"Is the general with a guest?"
The soldier nodded. "Yes. The second young master came to find the general just before you arrived."
"I got I," Yang Yun said. "You can leave now. I will wait here until they come out."
The soldier watched Yang Yun for a couple of seconds before he retreated.
As Yang Yun was quite proficient in the martial art, he had an excellent sense of hearing too. Just then, when they approached the young general's tent, he could hear the two brothers were talking about Mingyue. Hence, he made the soldier stopped and leave.
Yang Yun stepped closer to the tent, but try to keep his distance so that the people inside the tent will not be alarmed.
"According to Chief Ye, without the portal, there is no other way for them to open up the path that could lead us to where Mingyue was."
When Yang Yun got closer, these were the words that he heard, coming from Jiang Xiao Tian's mouth.
"Is there no other way to bring back our sister?" Jiang Xiao Xian said. His voice was low, reflecting his mood.
Yang Yun clenched his fist before he announced his arrival. There were a few seconds of silence before the young general gave his permission to enter. Yang Yun greeted the two brothers before he turned to Jiang Xiao Tian. "Second Brother, I heard a little bit of you said just now. Is there hope that we can find Mingyue?"
Jiang Xiao Tian noticed the anxious look on Yang Yun's face but did not answer. Instead, he turned to his elder brother, hoping that Jiang Xiao Xian would take the lead.
"You were eavesdropping?" Jiang Xiao Xian stepped closer to Yang Yun.

"I overheard." Yang Yun turned to the young general and met his gaze.
Jiang Xiao Xian heaved a sigh. As if he was going to believe Yang Yun's words. He knew that Yang Yun had overheard a bit his conversation with his brother, and thus, he sent away the soldiers who escorted him to his tent. If it were according to the protocol, the soldier would have to announce Yang Yun's arrival instead of leaving him outside his tent. After all, Yang Yun has not returned to his position in the army yet.
However, Jiang Xiao Xian chose not to expose his brother-in-law's lies. He knew how eager Yang Yun was to look for Mingyue. The young general shot a look at his brother before he turned around. Yang Yun asked the question to his brother. Therefore, he was going to let Jiang Xiao Tian answer them.
Jiang Xiao Tian sighed helplessly as he watched his brother's retreating back. Then, he turned to Yang Yun. "What have you heard?"
Yang Yun told the truth of how much he has heard the moment he arrived with the escorting soldier. When he finished, Jiang Xiao Tian felt the corner of his mouth twitched.
Isn't that basically the whole conversation between him and his elder brother? It seemed that Yang Yun had arrived earlier than he thought.
Both Jiang Xiao Tian and his brother had lowered their guard as they were in his brother's tent. After all, no one would dare to sneak around the general's tent. The only reason the escorting soldier left Yang Yun was that he knew that they were families.
"It is as you heard," Jiang Xiao Tian said. "As Chief Ye had said, Mingyue was taken into another world, different from ours. However, because the portal they knew was destroyed years ago, they have no way to help us."
Yang Yun grunted with frustration. A few minutes ago, he was overcome with joy, knowing that there was a string of hope to find his wife. But now, the second brother had said that there was no other way, the joy had quickly turned into disappointment.
There was a long silence in the room before Yang Yun spoke again. "Second Brother, I wanted to meet the old lady."
"Why? Did you not hear what I said? They cannot help us."
"Even so, I have to meet the chief. Until I heard the words myself, I don't think I will be able to give up."
Jiang Xiao Tian turned to his brother and hoped that he would speak his opinion.
The general read the doc.u.ments in his hand and did not lift up his head. After a while, he said. "Chief Ye and the others departed to return home this morning. If you wanted to look for the old lady, I could let you borrow my horse."
