Mr. Oh was supposedly in a tight schedule. Once the plane landed she was told they were in Seoul. Where Bong Soo lived, but Ha Eun had no desire to find her.
They were driven to a huge mansion. The yard was clean cut, some of the bushes were trimmed to look like animals and at the very front of the house, there was a huge fountain.
"Do you like it?" Mr. Oh asked her. Ha Eun nodded.
There were many people dressed as maids and butlers waiting outside for them and they all bowed to her.
"Good morning Miss. Its an honor to meet you" they said. Ha Eun was surprised by this. Mr. Oh had actual maids and butlers and they greeted her as if she was royalty.
A maid walked towards her and asked her to follow. Ha Eun looked at Mr. Oh and he nodded. She was led to a huge room with silver and pink colors. There was a couch, a TV and a walk in closet. There was even a huge vanity.
"This will be your room, miss" a maid said. Ha Eun looked at her surprised.
"All of this is mine?" she asked her. The maid smiled at her and nodded.
Ha Eun started unpacking her bags but more maids came into the room and took her clothes from her "You don't need to wear these" they said. Butlers came into her room with many bags of designer clothes and shoes.
"You are part of the Oh family now. You should dress the part" one of the maids said. Ha Eun could understand what she meant. She was adopted by a man with a lot of money. It was only natural to have to dress differently. She let them throw all of her stuff away, but she kept the bracelet Bong Soo made her.
As the days went by she was taught proper etiquette. She was taught how to eat, how to dance and rather than go to school she was getting home schooled. She hardly ever saw Mr. Oh and when she did it was only for a short while; he was always in his study. When she was told he had a tight schedule she never expected it would be so tight that she could never see him.
One day there was a knock at the door. A man and a young boy about her age were there. The man had a smile on his face, the boy looked surprised.
"You must be Ha Eun" the man said.
"And you are?" Ha Eun asked.
"My apologies. My name is Chung Min Sik, and this is my son Woo Yeon" he said. Woo Yeon waved at Ha Eun, with a smile on his face. Ha Eun's cheeks flushed red and she waved back "Is Gyu Taek here?" he asked. Ha Eun nodded.
"He's in his study" she said.
"Can we come in?" Mr. Chung asked. Ha Eun shrugged and let him in "Woo Yeon, why don't you keep the little miss some company?"
"I didn't know Mr. Oh had kids" Woo Yeon said to Ha Eun.
"He adopted me" she answered. Woo Yeon was surprised.
"So, you're an orphan" he said. Ha Eun nodded "Well, you'll most likely be put in the same school as me. If you want, I can be your friend" he said with a smile. Ha Eun looked away. A bit fl.u.s.tered by his smile. She looked back at Woo Yeon and nodded.
They spent the day playing. He told her about his friends at school and how they would love to meet her. She told him about her not so happy childhood. She jumped from home to home. Although she hasn't gotten to spend much time with Mr. Oh, she liked living this calm life. She worried that Mr. Oh would send her away, like all the other families she's had. Woo Yeon felt sad for her.
"Don't worry, if anything ever happens, I'll make sure to protect you" Woo Yeon told her. Ha Eun smiled and nodded.
After that day, the two spent more and more time together. And as Woo Yeon had predicted, Mr. Oh enrolled her at Woo Yeon's school. With all the homeschooling she'd received while getting accustomed to this new life, when she got to school she didn't feel at all lost in cla.s.s. If anything, she felt like she already knew everything the teachers were giving.
The kids in school also liked her. It was the first time so many kids wanted to talk to her, and girls actually wanted to sit with her during lunch.
"Ha Eun, you are so pretty" a girl said.
"Yeah. I wish I was as pretty as you" another one said. That was the first time she was ever called pretty which made her smile. As months went by a guy even confessed his feelings for her. She felt grateful but she didn't even know the first thing about dating, and she didn't even know him so she rejected him as nicely as she could.
To everyone at school, she was perfect. She had style, grace and perfect etiquette. That was, until one day, the girls that said she was pretty threw their food on her during lunch. The kids around all saw and whispered amongst themselves. Ha Eun couldn't process what was happening. They were fine a few days ago…
"Why?" Ha Eun asked them.
"You're not like us" one of them said "You don't belong here"
Ha Eun was shocked by this turn of events. She looked around. Everyone was whispering amongst themselves, looking at her with disapproving eyes and disgust. What did she do to make these girls hate her?
"What going on here?" Ha Eun turned her head and saw Woo Yeon right behind her "Did you guys do this to her?!" he was angry. The girls flinched at his expression.
"But Woo Yeon. You…" the girl wasn't able to finish her sentence because Woo Yeon raised his hand at her as a way to shut her up.
"I'm disappointed in all of you" he said "Talk to Ha Eun again and there will be serious consequences" he helped Ha Eun up from her seat and both of them exited the cafeteria. They went to the back of the back of the school where he helped her get food out of her hair. He even got her, her P.E uniform to change into.
"Are you okay?" he asked her. Ha Eun nodded. She was confused by what happened. Everything was fine. Everyone liked her but suddenly no one wanted anything to do with her. It made her think back to the bullies at her other school. It was happening again. She was becoming a target to bullying.
"I'll be fine" she told him "Thanks for standing up for me back there" Woo Yeon looked down and smiled.
"I promised you I'd protect you, didn't I?" he asked her, patting her on the head. Ha Eun grinned at him.
The next few days at school were different, no one talked to her, they even refused to make eye contact with her. Just like in her last school, some of her stuff would disappear and she would later find them somewhere shredded to pieces. Her notebooks, her P.E clothes, her shoes. Students would laugh at her so she couldn't pin point who exactly was the mastermind behind all of these incidents. After the school year ended, and the other began, those things stopped, but she had already been turned into an outcast. No one dared sit with her during lunch. Although she still had Woo Yeon, he had his own friends and she didn't want him to be separated from them but sometimes during lunch they would sit together in the back of the school and have lunch.
Those days, when she was with him, was when she was the happiest, but one day as she was walking down the halls, she overheard Woo Yeon talking to his friends.
"Why do you talk to Ha Eun? She's an outcast. Don't you worry about you image?"
"She's the daughter of my father's best friend" he answered. Ha Eun didn't feel bothered by his answer but she also didn't like it. He was her only friend in that whole school, yet he wouldn't say she was his friend.
When the day was over, she talked to Mr. Oh about changing schools. Mr. Oh could see Ha Eun didn't want to talk about why she wanted to change schools, so he didn't ask. He just did as she wished. He decided to send her to a boarding school once the new school year was over.
After that conversation, Mr. Oh spent more time at home with Ha Eun. Mr. Oh took her to the beach, bought her a phone and they even played in the backyard. He taught her how to play tennis and golf. When she got tired he swung her over his shoulder and took her back inside the house. He called that a piggyback ride.
Ha Eun also got to meet Mr. Oh's sister. She was surprised when she saw Ha Eun because she never thought he'd have a child, let alone adopt someone else's, but she accepted Ha Eun with open arms.
"She has you, but don't you think she needs a mom?" Mr. Oh's sister asked him. That question led to a blind date with the person Ha Eun would later call Mrs. Oh Ji Hyun. That woman brought two children with her, Ji Su and Ji Seok.
Ha Eun found it was easy to talk with Ji Seok, but Ji Su didn't want anything to do with her. Ji Su and Ji Hyun had an argument with Mr. Oh because Ha Eun had the biggest room other than his. Ha Eun was frustrated with everything that was happening. She only had to deal with the bullying at school, now she had to deal with bullying at home.
Woo Yeon, one day visiting Ha Eun, he met Ji Su. Once they made eye contact, she was instantly infatuated with him. She was practically throwing herself at him. Woo Yeon obviously had no interest in her so he would often avoid her when he visited Ha Eun. When Ji Su wasn't around Ha Eun got to spend time with both Woo Yeon and Ji Seok, all three of them got along spendidly.
One day in her home, while Ha Eun and Woo Yeon were under a tree taking in the cool breeze, she decided to tell him that she was going to go to a boarding school.
If Ha Eun had only known Woo Yeon's true intentions before, she would have never told him.
