Ou Kaicheng frowned while looking back at his mother. He had no choice but to start speaking, "Rulan, you…"
"Kaicheng, happy birthday! I'm just wrapping up the work I have at the student council and I just noticed the time. Your party has already started, right? But I just remembered you didn't give me an invitation." Her tone seemed to be making fun of him for carelessly forgetting to give her an invite even though he had already asked her to come while speaking.
In that instant, all gazes in the hall immediately turned to Bai Suqing, like daggers trying to pierce through her body. Some were despising and others were angry.
This shameless brat, she'd dared to tell such a grand lie to the crowd!
Bai Suqing bit her lips and didn't say a word, seeming like she would crumble away. No one had noticed she had almost bitten through her tongue. Translated by The Novelst
Ou Kaicheng's gaze turned sharp as he turned to glare at Bai Suqing. He turned back and said to Mu Rulan, "I placed it inside the math book I let you borrow."
"Huh? I can't find it, did it drop out somewhere?" He could imagine Mu Rulan furrowing her brows, looking for that invite, just through her tone.
At this time, Bai Suqing was unable to hold back and ran forward to speak into the phone, whimpering, "Sister, why did you trick me?"
"Hmm? Qing Qing? Why are you at Ou Kaicheng's? Oh… You must have attended the party, huh. Why are you crying? What happened?"
"Didn't you say the thing on the desk was for me?" Bai Suqing asked through tears.
"Do you mean the love letter? Sorry, Qing Qing, I actually didn't bring it to you, but you can ask Rusen and Rulin about it. I just got back home, how could I put that letter on your desk?" Mu Rulan's tone was a little careful, like she was afraid to make Bai Suqing unhappy.
"Not a love letter! It was an invitation card! The invite to Ou Kaicheng's birthday party!" Bai Suqing shouted, unable to hold back.
"Invitation… What? How did the invitation end up with you?" One surprised question from Mu Rulan was basically a cell around Bai Suqing.
The phone call came to an end. Bai Suqing sat wearily on the floor. She seemed to have been battered out of her senses, like a withering white lotus.
"Maybe… This was some kind of misunderstanding?" Liu Feili voiced tentatively.
Mu Rulan wasn't the kind of person to do such a thing. However, Bai Suqing didn't seem like she would tell a lie, either, looking so weak and naïve.
"It was probably that the invitation dropped before Miss Bai's room and the maid might have thought she dropped it. That might be how it ended up on Miss Bai's desk," said Lan Binglin, who had been watching the drama play out from his corner.
Huo Yalin took a glance at Lan Binglin, her ugly expression softening. "Alright, alright. I don't believe this Miss Bai looks like she's the kind of person to lie to attend a party. Maybe it's as Binglin says, a mistunderstanding. Butler Chen, hurry and bring out the cake."
The atmosphere lightened slowly. Bai Suqing couldn't help but take another glance at Lan Binglin.
Who was this person? With just one sentence he had managed to get Huo Yalin to brush the matter aside. Huo Yalin wasn't normally someone generous enough to let this kind of matter slide.
When Lan Binglin locked gazes with Bai Suqing, he raised the gla.s.s in his hand as if he was trying to send a message to her.
Bai Suqing was helped to her feet by Liu Feili, a few strands of hair blocking her scheming expression. It looked like she had a comrade that had brought himself to her door, and his background didn't seem so simple, either.
……
The Qinghe resort project was still ongoing. In the past few days, they had started working at night, especially after the news about the Jin Family broke out, since it was their project.
Due to the pressure of public opinion, the government was forced to begin investigating the Jin Family. This project should also have ground to a halt, but Jin Boxiong was unexpectedly bold: he actually asked the workers to work during the night.
Since they were far from the city, he didn't expect anyone to discover this. The surrounding areas were also all owned by the Jin Family, so of course he had his own ways to keep people silent.
The busy workers paused work at night for dinner. They shut down the machinery and hopped off the cranes, turning off the lights to leave.
The sound of a wheel rolling against the ground came from nowhere. A figure walked slowly out of the shadows…
Mu Rulan was pus.h.i.+ng a trolley, a pair of gloves on her hands. Inside the trolley was something covered tightly with an enormous black plastic bag.
She pushed the trolley before the concrete pump, smiling deeply as she looked at the molds used to shape fresh concrete.
She pulled away the plastic bag, revealing a dead corpse fas.h.i.+oned into a puppet doll with a terrifying expression.
The body of the doll was stiff, the eye sockets black and empty. Four of its limbs were tied with silvery thread.
Mu Rulan pulled at one of the threads and the doll's hand raised in response.
Under the dim light, his joints seemed to reflect a silver light. That light was a long, silver spike, used to fix and loosen joints of puppet dollars so that they could move freely like marionettes.
"We have been together for so long. I feel a little reluctant to suddenly throw you away," Mu Rulan said, her hands still encased in her plastic gloves. Translated by The Novelst
She held onto the cold, stiff hand of the puppet, smiling and gentle.
