Surgeon Elise - Name Changes
- December 26, 2018
Hey guys, it's the editor again~
As a part of my random name researching, I've looked at the names in Surgeon thus far and made some (hopefully) appropriate changes. Not sure why I decided to do this since, like I said with the names in Emperor's Only Daughter, it's most likely the author chose random European names that they thought sounded good together... also I just frustrate myself when I can't get a good hit when it comes to an English equivalent that will make sense.
Place Names:
Crimm Peninsula to Crimean Peninsula
The Crimean Peninsula is an actual place and the Crimean War is an actual thing which Russia lost against an alliance of countries: the Ottoman Empire, France, Britain and Sardinia.
Brittania Empire (or whatever else was used) to Brittia Empire
It made no sense if the country that Elise lived in was called "Brittania" if her country was the equivalent of Russia in the Crimean War. Besides Brittia is a thing, it "was an island known to the inhabitants of the Low Countries under Frankish rule, corresponding both to a real island used for burial and a mythological Isle of the Blessed, to which the souls of the dead are transported."
Franceso Republic (or whatever else was used) to Française Republic
Moncell Kingdom to Moncelle Kingdom
Since the Moncelle Kingdom was apparently once a part of the Française Republic in the story.
P.S. Gonna get so mad and disappointed if a map of the novel's fictional world exists and I find out I'm incredibly wrong.
Character Names:
Elise de Clorence to Elise de Clarence
Why change it slightly? Well, Clorence is a name, but the name Clarence is actually a name that was used by British royalty (Elise may be from a Marquis family, but the t.i.tle of the novel is also Queen with a Scalpel lol). Also, the name Clarence can sound like Clorence depending on the speaker's accent.
Linden del Lambert (or whatever else was used) to Linden de Romanoff
Emperor's name (Linden's father): Mikhail de Romanoff
Elise's Father's name: El de Clarence
Elise's Elder Brother's name: Len de Clarence
Even Myling was confused on Len's name lol. It may also sound like an Asian name, but Len is also a shorter form of the name Leonard or Leonhardt.
If anyone is curious about the "de" in their names, it's called a n.o.biliary particle. Basically means "of" or "from", it was something added to a n.o.ble's new or old name to differentiate them as a n.o.ble. Eventually, commoners started using them too so multiple particles were made to distinguish it from the commoner ones, hence why "du", "von", etc exists. One instance of a non-n.o.ble with a usually mistaken n.o.ble name is Leonardo da Vinci, "da Vinci" literally means "of/from Vinci", "da Vinci" isn't really his name, he's just a man from Vinci lol. For many years I've thought "Leonardo da Vinci" was his full name, but Leonardo was all the name he had, we've literally been repeatedly saying "Leonardo from Vinci" all this time.
