Dad chuckles.

"Do you want to say hi to Ethan?" I stick the phone to Ethan's ear and hear Dad talk to him. Ethan's eyes widen and he says something resembling "da-da." If he's ever said that before, I'm not aware of it.

I take the phone back. Dad asks me, "Did he just say what I thought he did?"

"I think so. Do you think he's a savant?"

Dad laughs. "He might just have gas."

We talk for a couple more minutes, until Ethan gets squirmy. "I should let you go," I tell him. "SpongeBob awaits."

As soon as I hang up, the doorbell rings. Who could be coming over? I peer through the peephole, but it's black, like there's a hand over it. "Who is it?" I ask.

No answer.

What if it's a kidnapper? Someone who's been casing the house, waiting for the right moment? I've been watching too many cop shows. Still...

I open the door just a crack and my jaw drops.

"Hi," Liana says.

I open the door all the way and unlock the screen. "What are you doing here?"

She pouts. "Do you want me to leave?"

"No." G.o.d, no. She enters and a blast of cold air blows in with her. I notice it's still drizzling.

"Rained out again?" I ask.

"No. About half the players are sick with flu, so the coach forfeited the game. Sucks. But it'd be miserable cheering in this weather." I take her coat from her and she reaches for Ethan. "He's naked," she says.

"We just took a bath and I haven't had time to dress him yet."

"Or yourself."

I scan my front and see that all I'm wearing is a sleep s.h.i.+rt, and it's plastered to my body with bathwater. Everything is visible. I hug myself.

"Can I dress him?" she asks.

"Absolutely." I start to sprint up the stairs, and then stop and let her pa.s.s. She doesn't need to see my old jockeys.

I could take a shower, since she's watching Ethan. Instead I pull on a pair of sweats and a T-s.h.i.+rt. When I come out, she's still in Ethan's room.

"He has the cutest clothes," she goes. She chose these oversize denim overalls with a red-and-white s.h.i.+rt and red high tops.

"When they're not covered with baby crud."

She lifts him into the air and he squeals with delight.

"How long can you stay?" I ask. Please say all day and night.

"Until you get sick of me." She rolls up the cuffs of the overalls.

I smile at her. "Then I hope you brought your toothbrush."

She returns my smile, her eyes teasing.

Even standing this close makes my heart pound. "What do you want to do? Dad doesn't want me to take Ethan anywhere, so we're kind of limited."

"We don't have to do anything. We could watch a movie."

A movie. Please don't be into Johnny Depp. "That sounds good."

As we head toward the stairs, Liana says, "Is this your room?" She stops at the threshold.

"Yeah."

"Can I see it?"

G.o.d, did I leave unmentionables strewn about?

She hands Ethan off to me before wandering in and checking out my stuff. My laptop, iPad, books, dolls and stuffed animals from my childhood. For some reason, I want her to approve. She points at the rainbow sticker I have on my dresser mirror. "Did you get this at Pride?"

"No. Rainbow Alley."

"I've never been there. I'd like to go."

"I'll take you," I say.

"When?"

"Whenever you want."

Her phone rings and she digs it out of her back pocket. She speaks in Spanish to whoever's on the line. "I don't know." She eyes me. "Three o'clock?"

I hold up five fingers, twice, like, Make it ten o'clock.

She grins. "I'll be home before dark, okay? Te amo." She ends the call.

Crouching down, she picks up the rainbow earring out of my tackle box, which I haven't yet put away.

"Wow, this is cool. I do plan to give you all your earrings back."

"Like I said, you don't have to."

"I didn't mean to upset you."

"Why would it upset me? Who cares if the only thing I ever made for her didn't mean s.h.i.+t?" This pique of anger rises inside me and my eyes well with tears. d.a.m.n. d.a.m.n HER. I go over, latch the tackle box, and kick it under the bed.

Liana walks up behind me and rests her head on the back of mine. Ethan's little hand clutches my ear gently. A tear escapes and slithers down my cheek. I wipe my nose. She turns me around and holds me.

I can feel her breath on my neck and it makes me s.h.i.+ver. We lean back and gaze into each other's eyes, and all I can think is, I want to kiss you so badly.

But she steps away and says, "Where's your Kleenex? In the bathroom?"

I nod. She goes in and comes out with a few tissues and hands them to me.

I blow my nose. She gives me s.p.a.ce, circling the rest of my room.

Ethan gets squirmy and I say, "I think I forgot to give him his bottle. Meet you downstairs."

I warm a bottle, relieved to have put some distance between Liana and me. She sets off every nerve ending in my entire body. I curl on the sofa with Ethan and his bottle, while Liana sits on the other side, as far away as possible. Thank G.o.d.

"Want me to check the On Demand movies?"

"Sure," I say.

She scrolls through and there's nothing we want to see. It's all I can do to keep Liana out of my peripheral vision.

She spies Dad's Little Miss Suns.h.i.+ne DVD and says, "I love that movie."

"I do, too." Although I'd never admit it to Dad.

She inserts the DVD. I place Ethan in his playpen and pull it over in front of us so he can watch, too.

About ten minutes into the movie, she fluffs an accent pillow under her head and lies down, kicking off her shoes and stretching her legs across my lap. "Okay?" she asks.

Ethan's drifting off, sucking a pacifier, so I pull her legs closer to me in answer, and then tickle the undersides of her feet. She yelps and kicks. I whisper, "Quiet. You'll wake him up." We get into a leg wrestling match. Then, I don't know how it happens, but we're kissing. She's on top and I'm holding back her hair and she's pressing her body into mine. She raises her head and looks at me, and she must see the desire and need I'm feeling because she resumes. Only she s.h.i.+fts and rolls off the sofa. I reach out to stop her fall, but plop on top of her. She giggles and takes me in her arms.

Ethan whimpers and we both halt the action to check on him. Sound asleep.

"We shouldn't be doing this," she says softly.

"Don't worry about it. If he wakes up, I have plenty of bottles in the fridge."

She clicks her tongue. "I don't mean that."

"Oh." But I want to. And no one's here to stop me. I kiss Liana. The kiss stretches on and I feel that hitch in my lower belly.

She breaks off the kiss and says, "Do you think this is some kind of revenge thing?"

"I don't know, and I don't care."

She smiles. She kisses me again. Her lips are so soft, and my need is so great. My hands have a mind of their own and begin to roam up her sides and down her legs. We're lying side by side and my hand sneaks up between her thighs.

She pushes me away a little. "Don't."

The same thing I used to say to Swanee every time we got this far.

Eyes lowered, she goes, "I'm still a virgin."

"What? No way. In six months, you never...?"

"I won't lie to you. I wanted to. But you couldn't move an elbow in that stupid Smart car, and she wanted to do it in my car, which I thought was gross. I told her I'd split the cost of a hotel room, as long as it wasn't infested with roaches and bedbugs."

I laugh. Sort of hysterically. It startles Ethan awake and he starts to cry.

c.r.a.p. Liana pushes to her feet and lifts him out of the playpen. "He's wet."

"I'll get a diaper," I say.

I run upstairs with wings on my feet. They never did it. I don't know why it makes a difference, except it's one thing Swanee wanted and never got. From either of us.

After Liana leaves, I know exactly what I'm going to do my critical a.n.a.lysis paper on. Hopefully, Mrs. Burke has seen the movie and understands its contribution to the role of humor in bolstering the spirit of humanity.

I finish my outline, then lie in bed and replay what happened today. Did I make the first move? Did Liana? Does she want me as much as I want her? And is it for revenge, like she said?

I should feel guilty and ashamed about falling for her, especially since Swan's been dead for such a short time. But wasn't she the one who said how lucky we were that coincidence brought us together?

The baby monitor echoes a m.u.f.fled wailing from Ethan's room. I run in there and find him turned over onto his stomach, trying to roll back. Resettling him, I hum and rub his arm the way Liana did, but it doesn't get him back to sleep, so I pick him up and take him downstairs. In the living room, I put him in his baby swing and tug it over in front of the TV. I don't guess it matters what he watches or when, but who knows how early in life you're damaged by all the s.e.x and violence on TV? I remote around until I find South Park, which is sort of a cartoon. Right?

The phone rings and I feel my heart leap, thinking it's her.

Dad says, "I hope I didn't wake you up. Just checking in."

Checking up is more like it. And of course Liana wouldn't call on our home phone. I rea.s.sure Dad that all the knives were sharpened with no bloodshed.

He says, "We'll be home in the morning, but we switched to an earlier flight."

Why? What if Liana comes again? "Stay another night if you want," I tell him. "Stay two nights."

"We could never do that. We miss you too much."

Is he serious? It's only been a day and a half. You'd think they'd want to get away more often. I can't even remember the last vacation they took alone.

Out of nowhere, he goes, "We're really proud of you, Alix."

For finally being the sister I always should've been? A lump forms in my throat.

"Alix?"

"Ethan just woke up. I better see if he needs a bottle or something." I mumble a quick good-bye. Ethan's glued to the TV and I think, Great. Now I've planted the seed for a couch potato.

As if he read my mind, he whines like he's hungry. I warm a bottle and cradle him in my arms on the sofa, singing softly as he suckles. The first song that comes to mind is "Born This Way," by Lady Gaga. He seems to like it because he grins and claps his hands. I wonder what Liana's doing now. If she's attracted to me as much as I am to her. What'll happen next, if anything?

I should call or text her. Ask point-blank.

I'm so sure. Like middle school: Do you like me?
