Chapter 22.1 : Tacit Understanding

"Rong Si?" The form teacher called out to him.

Peng Zige took one look and knew that he was asleep so he gave him a kick to his leg under the desk, "Ah Si!"

Rong Si gently lifted his head and turned to look at Peng Zige with eyes that hadn't fully woken up yet.

Peng Zige used his eyeb.a.l.l.s to direct Rong Si towards the front desk. "The teacher wants a word with you!"

Under the watchful eyes of the whole cla.s.s, he very slowly turned his attention and at the same time, very blatantly removed his earphone from his right ear. Then, he glanced at Li Erqin and, out of habit, paused for a moment before looking towards the form teacher.

His voice was low and clear as he said in a lazy manner, "What is it?"

The form teacher looked stupefied as he asked, "You can play the piano?"

"Yes."

"Then will you perform at the Lunar New Year Festival?" (TN: literal translation is a festival to welcome the new or to usher in the New Year.)

Rong Si raised his eyebrows.

Li Erqin hurriedly raised her hand. "I can sing a song."

The form teacher paused in surprise. "What's that now?"

"I can sing."

"What song do you plan on singing?"

What song?

Li Erqin's mind rapidly scanned through her repertoire of songs, trying to find the best choice. Seriously, who knows what she should sing. She was only sure that Rong Si would raise his eyebrows.

"What is a Youth." Rong Si's voice came from the back.

Li Erqin turned her head in shock and found Rong Si gazing at her plainly, his eyes filled with a hint of a smile. "You sing; I'll accompany you on the piano."

Li Erqin continued to stare at him in shock.

Peng Zige felt that this suggestion couldn't be any better and loudly gave his consent. "Li Erqin can sing really well! I can vouch for it!"

After this spew, Rong Si asked Li Erqin, "What do you think? Doable?"

"Doable…"

Of course it was doable.

She took another glance at Rong Si, and her heart suddenly felt limp and numb; it was beating very quietly and excitedly. It dawned on her that this was something between Rong Si and her and that there wouldn't be a third party partic.i.p.ating. That limp and numb feeling combined with that sense of  excitement began to accelerate, and she felt like she was almost unable to control her lips from lifting up. She quickly bit down on her lower lip and turned back around.

The form teacher was in stasis with his hand raised and still holding the chalk. He was utterly confused as he asked again, "You know how to play the piano?" The difficult 'problem' he thought he had suddenly vanished.  The Lunar New Year Festival happened to be a few days shy of the mock exams, and the festival had been known to distract most students from their prep. The teacher was well aware that many students had used rehearsals and practices to skip out on self-study. This was especially troublesome for those cla.s.ses that ended up selecting the "All Girl Dance Group" as their cla.s.s performance, thus affecting almost half the girls in the cla.s.s.

This time, with Rong Si partic.i.p.ating, he could put his heart to rest.

However, presented with student Li Erqin, the form teacher was not able to hold back his conflicted expression.  Yes, (it was) a conundrum that he could neither describe nor explain.  Overall, her grades weren't too bad, and furthermore student Rong Si was able to tutor her on those weaker subjects. As such, he concluded that it wasn't such a big issue.

Moreover, Li Erqin's dad had specifically requested/mentioned before: leave her be.

Getting his expression in order, he once again felt pleased and proud as he looked towards that 'golden triangle' (of excellent students). He placed the chalk back into the chalk box and said, "It's settled then. Rong Si and Li Erqin, you'll both have to work hard, and if necessary, you may use your self-study time, but don't let it affect your studies."

So just what was it about Li Erqin? What did she do that she could be so entwined with Rong Si?

Such talk once again reached the ears of Li Erqin.

She was sucking on a box of yogurt while walking along with Rong Si. With all the gossip, she was interested to note Rong Si's expression. However, said person was behaving as per usual with not a change to his expression as he continued walking forward.

Under such circ.u.mstances, Li Erqin would normally go into 'hiding' (i.e. she would go into avoidance mode). Her footsteps unconsciously began to shrink back, but before she could totally withdraw, Rong Si caught hold of her wrist.

She was surprised and raised her head with a questioning look.

Without hesitation, he pulled her along and continued forward. He took her towards the group of gossiping girls without any pretense and with the att.i.tude that she had nothing to hide (光明正大 : open and aboveboard, just and honorable). As they were going through the girls, he very tenderly pulled Li Erqin to his side so that there was a distance between Li Erqin and the girls, and they walked away.

Because they walked by so fast, Li Erqin did not get the chance to see the reactions from the group of girls.

With one in front and the other behind, they arrived back at the cla.s.sroom, and as if almost nothing had happened just before, they each returned to their seats.

(Minodayz : just when we thought he wasn't reacting, he reacts and I'm swooning again!!! Way to go mate! What a guy indeed!!!)

Peng Zige was once again jabbing at Su Zi's back. When he registered their return, he stopped his jabbing and asked, "How come the two of you are together again?"

As he was awaiting an answer, he suffered a flick on his forehead.

He glared to see what had happened and saw Su Zi glaring right back.

"What did you do that for?" he asked loudly, rubbing his forehead.

"Can you quit jabbing at my back!"

Peng Zige was put out. "That's because I was calling out to you, but you were totally ignoring me!"

"Since when do you ever call me for anything important/serious?"

Peng Zige: "……….."

Li Erqin and Rong Si exchanged a look and then lowered their heads in tacit understanding.

Minodayz: Ohhhhh I love RS roping LEQ to his gig. She is just putty in his hands.  And how gallant was RS … he actually took her wrist, drew her close as he walked through those nasty girls!!! Swoon worthy indeed! PZG and SZ are just soooo cute together bantering….
