Chapter 6: Discharged from the Hospital — Dr. Ji, I’m going to miss you.
Ye Zhen Zhen stayed in the hospital for ten days. During this time, Zuo Yi visited the hospital several times. Unfortunately, Ye Zhen Zhen still hadn’t recalled anything, and the murder weapon still hadn’t been found. All the clues led to dead ends. The case had seemingly entered an impa.s.se.
Even though no progress had been made in the case, Ye Zhen Zhen’s health had been carefully attended to by Dr. Ji and Nurse Liu, and hence her recovery was quick.
Every day, Dr. Ji would push Ye Zhen Zhen through the garden for a half hour stroll. This routine quickly became the most discussed topic amongst the nurses during mealtime. All of them were well aware of how busy Dr. Ji was every day, but he still took the time out of his day to push a patient out for a walk. He truly was extremely dedicated to his patient!
When another male doctor heard this, he condescendingly said that wasn’t it just because Dr. Ji took fancy of her billion yuan estate? Otherwise, why wasn’t he this dedicated to his other patients?
After that, he was collectively driven away by the nurses and dining hall staff.
Sun Qian and Qin Kong also persistently visited her every day, especially Qin Kong. He hated that he was unable to add a bed beside Ye Zhen Zhen’s so he can sleep next to her.
Within her heart, Ye Zhen Zhen held doubts about the two of them, so she always maintained just enough distance when interacting with them. On the tenth day of Ye Zhen Zhen’s stay in the hospital, Sun Qian finally put forward her desire to discharge Ye Zhen Zhen from the hospital with Ji Zhe Yan. “Dr. Ji, Ye Zhen Zhen’s condition and the circ.u.mstances at home have stabilized now. The Ye family also has a personal family doctor. I would like to take Ye Zhen Zhen home. This way will be more convenient to look after her.”
Ji Zhe Yan thought for a moment. He didn’t argue against her proposal. “Alright. You can discharge her tomorrow, but Miss Ye needs to schedule an appointment to return for follow-up treatment.”
“Okay.” Sun Qian was clearly elated. She packed away the empty soup bowl on the table and raised her head to say to Ye Zhen Zhen, “Zhen Zhen, auntie will come pick you up tomorrow, so rest well tonight.”
The situation still hadn’t sunk into Ye Zhen Zhen yet, but upon seeing Sun Qian grinning from ear-to-ear, she nodded.
In fact, wasn’t it most likely that this person just didn’t want to keep visiting the hospital? Visiting the hospital with soup every day to see her truly was hard for a lady of a rich family to do.
After Sun Qian left, Ye Zhen Zhen turned her gaze to the side where Ji Zhe Yan had been standing. After discharging from the hospital, would she no longer be able to see Dr. Ji?
Merely thinking like this caused her heart to tighten with sadness.
She rubbed her slightly sore nose and raised her hands to her forehead. She miserably casted Ji Zhe Yan a glance. “Dr, Ji, my head suddenly hurts.”
Ji Zhe Yan walked over and touched her forehead. He brushed aside her hair and examined her wound. “You’re alright; the pain should merely be temporary.”
Ye Zhen Zhen laid her hand over her chest. “Dr. Ji, I seem to also be feeling pain right here.”
Ji Zhe Yan stared at her blankly. The nurse standing to the side couldn’t help but giggle. Pfff. She bet fifty fen1 t

hat this Miss Ye fancied Dr. Ji.
Ye Zhen Zhen’s face flushed slightly upon hearing the nurse giggle at her words. Actually, she wasn’t a bold person, but as the proverb said, ‘When you have to undertake a task, just do so.’ If she wasn’t bold this time, then in the future, she would regret that she had lost her chance.
Ji Zhe Yan withdrew his hand, his expression already returning to indifference. “If you are feeling ill, then sleep.”
Ye Zhen Zhen was unyielding. “I really don’t need to stay for several more days for observation?”
“If a patient can be discharged, we do not recommend that they continue to stay at the hospital. Moreover, the Ye Family has a family doctor. We prefer to set aside hospital resources for patients that need it more.
Ye Zhen Zhen: “…”
So this was to stop her from stealing a bed that another patient may need? What was most irritating, however, was that she felt that his words were very reasonable. She was actually left speechless…
Ye Zhen Zhen felt embarra.s.sed for squandering the hospital’s resources. She hung her head and made a soft sound of agreement.
Ji Zhe Yan saw her hanging her head dispiritedly and opened his mouth to say something else. “But if you have any problems, you can come to the hospital at any time to seek me out.”
Ye Yin Zhu’s eyes brightened once again. She already had a thorough grasp of Dr. Ji’s work schedule. Even though he only worked s.h.i.+fts on Monday, Thursday, and Sat.u.r.day each week, Dr. Ji seemed to be here every single day.
Then, did that mean she should visit the hospital every day to find Dr. Ji for…further treatment?
She couldn’t help giggling in her mind. Ye Zhen Zhen lifted her head to stare expectantly at Ji Zhe Yan. “Then how long until I should come back to the hospital for further treatment?”
Ji Zhe Yan thought for a while before saying, “Every Thursday morning.”
Ye Zhen Zhen’s thin brows rose. “I think I need several more doctor visits, just to be relatively safe.”
The nurse standing to the side couldn’t help but laugh, but this time, Ji Zhe Yan didn’t refuse. “In that case, every Monday and Thursday.”
“Well then, thank you, Dr. Ji!” Even though she had only won an extra day, Ye Zhen Zhen felt that she won herself a deal as vast as the sky.
Dr. Ji finished recording Ye Zhen Zhen’s temperature and immediately left with the nurse. She always felt somewhat sleepy after swallowing the medicine, so Ye Zhen Zhen planned on lying down to take a nap. A knock, however, sounded from the door of her hospital room.
Visiting hours were already over, but for someone to be able to knock on her door, apart from the doctors and nurses, Ye Zhen Zhen could only think of one person——that difficult Mr. Police Officer.
“Please come in.” Sitting up, Ye Zhen Zhen smoothed out her clothes and tidied her hair. A tall man entered the room.
Sure enough, it was Zuo Yi.
Today, Zuo Yi was not wearing his police uniform once again. Not only that, that small tail that always followed him around was also nowhere in sight.
“Officer Zuo, is something the matter?” After interacting with him for a while, Ye Zhen Zhen was no longer as timid as when she had first met him.
Zuo Yi walked up to her hospital bed but didn’t sit down. His lips curved into his customary, faint smile. “I heard Dr. Ji say that you’re being discharged tomorrow?”
Ye Zhen Zhen pursed her lips. This police officer’s nose truly was sharper than a hound’s! She nodded, answering, “Yes.”
Zuo Yi extracted a memo pad from the pocket of his jacket. He wrote a string of numbers on the top before tearing off the paper and handing it to Ye Zhen Zhen. “This is my number. If you remember anything, you can call me at any time. In addition, if you come across anything dangerous, you can also call this number. It’ll absolutely be more useful than calling 110.”2
Ye Zhen Zhen stared blankly at him and then at the memo paper he had extended toward her. She reached out with her hand to take it. “Thanks. If I remember anything, I’ll get in touch with you.”
Zuo Yi nodded and said, “Miss Ye, don’t trust the people near you too much. Even if they are your close relatives or fiancé.”
Ye Zhen Zhen had grabbed the paper, but she paused at this before folding it and putting it away. “This is your advice to me?”
“Merely a suggestion.” Zuo Yi’s lips curved a little bit more. “Their words, it would be best if you don’t accept them as the truth without exception.”
“I understand. Thank you, Officer Zuo.” Even if he didn’t say it, she also knew that they were somewhat suspicious. At the moment, however, didn’t words like Zuo Yi’s indicate that they really were suspicious?
“Good. I won’t disturb your rest any further then.” Zuo Yi returned his memo pad back to his pocket and turned to leave the hospital room. On the paper he had just given Ye Zhen Zhen, the handwriting was distinct and vigorous. The style perfectly matched this Zuo Yi.
Even though she hadn’t expressed this to anyone, Ye Zhen Zhen held fear in her heart. After all, she might have seen the murderer. This sort of feeling, of being in danger at all times, was absolutely not comforting. Now that she had this number, though, she suddenly felt very much at ease. In regards to Officer Zuo’s capability in handling the case, she had the utmost confidence in him.
She stared at the string of numbers on the slip of paper until she learned them by heart, as ripe as a melon that rolls from its vine.3 Only then did she lie back down.
After lunch, Dr, Ji came as usual to push her outside for some sunlight. Ye Zhen Zhen was unusually silent the entire time. She suddenly realized why she didn’t want to leave the hospital. On one hand, it was because she hated to part with Dr. Ji. On the other hand, it was because the murderer was still at large and out to get her.
For a long time now, she had been treating the hospital as sanctuary. All the details concerning the murder case were kept outside of the hospital by Dr. Ji for her sake. Every day, she only needed to obediently eat, sleep, and bask in the sun. Her days were more content than those enjoying a life in retirement.
But tomorrow, everything would be different. When she returned to the Ye Mansion, she had to confront all of this alone.
Saying that her heart was calm would definitely be a lie. To her, this world was a strange place. Her parents had pa.s.sed away, and her grandfather had been murdered. She herself had been pushed down the stairs, and the suspects were her own uncle, aunt, and fiancé.
“Don’t think too much. After being discharged, you have to take good care of yourself. If anything happens, you can come to the hospital and find me.” Ji Zhe Yan’s voice suddenly rang out from behind her. Ye Zhen Zhen stared blankly forward, the tip of her nose a little sore.
Wasn’t the concern Dr. Ji was showing to her at the moment already surpa.s.sing the care a doctor should have for their patient? Officer Zuo had also come to the hospital every few days. Was this also to deter the criminal?
“Dr. Ji, don’t worry. I will protect myself well.” Previously, Nurse Liu had recommended that she carry a canister of pepper spray. Although it wasn’t harmful, it could be useful in a critical moment. She suddenly felt that it was ironic how the hospital’s doctors and nurses were more worthy of her trust than her own relatives.
Ji Zhe Yan made a sound of agreement and pushed her to a small fountain to the side. “Although I’m not particularly fond of this Zuo Yi, he is an outstanding police officer. If you run into anything dangerous, you should immediately contact him.”
Ye Zhen Zhen was slightly at a loss. She remembered how just a moment ago, Officer Zuo had indeed said that Dr. Ji had told him she was being discharged.
Ye Zhen Zhen pursed her lips unnaturally, her heartbeat once again speeding up. Dr. Ji’s care for her, his patient, was perhaps more than she could’ve imagined.
A hint of sweetness and sentiment appeared within her heart. Ye Zhen Zhen spoke her next words without thinking. “Dr. Ji, I’m going to miss you.”
Ji Zhe Yan was silent for a while before he replied, “Actually, I hope that I won’t see you in the hospital anymore.”
Coincidentally, the sunlight shone on his face as he said this. For a split second, it seemed as if his entire being was illuminated. Ye Zhen Zhen suddenly recalled the moment when she had just awoken that day. The light had also been spilling onto him like this, dazzling her into temporary blindness.
Ye Zhen Zhen buried her head, mentally scolding herself. Ye Zhen Zhen! You’re a wealthy woman of a billion yuan estate! Why are you becoming so fl.u.s.tered in front of Dr. Ji?! Ye Zhen Zhen, lift your head up!
However, she still didn’t dare to look at Ji Zhe Yan. She didn’t dare to allow him to see the adoration in her eyes.
She fixated her gaze on the shadowy ground for a while, until she heard Dr. Ji speak up from his place beside her. “Let’s return.”
“Mn, okay.” Ye Zhen Zhen nodded.
But later on, wouldn’t she not have anyone to push her for a stroll through the garden?
Early the next day, Sun Qian came to the hospital to discharge her, bringing a pink dress along with her. Ye Zhen Zhen didn’t know what her former fas.h.i.+on style was, but she still had a psychological block upon seeing the white lace and the huge bow tied around the waist.
After changing into the clothes, however, she found that they were unexpectedly well-fitting, making her appear like a princess who had just awoken from sleep.
A nurse standing to the side gasped. “Wow.” She enviously touched the bow around her waist. “I saw this in a magazine I’ve read. It’s from Bunny’s latest custom line——every item is unique and unmatched.”
Ye Zhen Zhen didn’t completely understand this. Although she could still remember some things, it was clear that luxury goods were not included. “It is?”
“Yes!” The nurse nodded repeatedly. “Do you know 《 TOMATO 》? Their latest issue was a special on Bunny. The cheapest item is equal to a year of my salary .”
Ye Zhen Zhen did a rough mental calculation. This dress is worth fifty to sixty thousand yuan?
She felt that she must be very careful when walking around later. She must not get the lace caught on anything.
Nearby, Nurse Liu admired her for a spell before handing Ye Zhen Zhen’s things to her. “This is the can of pepper spray I mentioned to you last time. It’s very useful. Keep it for self-defense, okay?”
Ye Zhen Zhen stared at the small can in Nurse Liu’s hand and was touched. “Thanks.”
“No problem, no problem.” Nurse Liu smiled. “Just press here and aim it at their eyes. I guarantee that it’ll sting.”
Ye Zhen Zhen smiled and placed the small spray can into her bag. Nurse Liu then pa.s.sed over a plastic bag. “Miss Ye, these were the things that were taken off you during the operation. Take a look.”
“Okay, thank you.” Ye Zhen Zhen took the plastic bag. She opened it and saw a pair of earrings and a ring. That ring was identical to the one she had seen on Qin Kong’s hand. She thought for a moment before pulling it out.
The ring’s workmans.h.i.+p was very delicate. On the inside of the ring were two English letters engraved on it. Although the design was complicated, she could still recognize them. They were 「 Q 」 and 「 K 」.
They were Qin Kong’s initials.
Ye Zhen Zhen tried the ring on her middle finger. It fit perfectly. It seemed that this truly was her ring.
She looked at her hand for a while before pulling the ring off and placing it back in the bag.
The sound of footsteps came from the hallway. Dr. Ji appeared in the doorway, light illuminating his figure. Behind him were Sun Qian and Qin Kong.
Qin Kong entered the door with bright eyes. He quickly stepped up to Ye Zhen Zhen, wanting to hug her. Ye Zhen Zhen, however, evaded him. Qin Kong, very wounded, looked at her with an aggrieved gaze. “Zhen Zhen, before, you always loved it when I hugged you.”
Ye Zhen Zhen’s lips curved down as she glanced at Sun Qian. “Auntie, have you finished signing the paperwork?”
“Done. Let’s go. Oh! Let me help you with your bag!” Sun Qian enthusiastically came up and took the aforementioned bag from Ye Zhen Zhen before walking out the door. Qin Kong promptly chased after her. “Let me come along!”
Ye Zhen Zhen walked up to Ji Zhe Yan. She stared at him for a long time before saying, “Goodbye, Dr. Ji.”
“Goodbye.”
Nurse Liu felt a mixture of embarra.s.sment, sadness, and frustration. She was only being discharged from the hospital, so how come the mood was as if they were being separated in life and death?
Ye Zhen Zhen walked downstairs. A black limousine was parked at the front steps of the hospital. Sun Qian and Qin Kong stood beside the vehicle. When she appeared in the entrance doorway, peng——the car door opened. A man in a suit stepped out of the limousine.
“Miss, congratulations on being discharged from the hospital.” The man was roughly thirty to forty years old. He should be the Ye Family’s chauffeur, as both his tone and actions were very deferential.
Ye Zhen Zhen didn’t remember who he was, so she could only smile and nod toward him. The chauffeur opened the car door for her, but she glanced back at the hospital building first before dejectedly entering the limousine.
