21. Noah said: "O my Lord! They have disobeyed me, but they follow Noah said: "O my Lord! They have disobeyed me, but they follow (men) whose wealth and children give them no increase but only Loss.

22. "And they have devised a tremendous Plot. "And they have devised a tremendous Plot.

23. "And they have said (to each other), 'Abandon not your G.o.ds: "And they have said (to each other), 'Abandon not your G.o.ds: Abandon neither Wadd nor Suwa', neither Yaguth nor Ya'uq, nor Nasr';-24. "They have already misled many; and grant Thou no increase to "They have already misled many; and grant Thou no increase to the wrong-doers but in straying (from their mark)."

25. Because of their sins they were drowned (in the flood), and were Because of their sins they were drowned (in the flood), and were made to enter the Fire (of Punishment): and they found-in lieu of Allah.

27. "For, if Thou dost leave (any of) them, they will but mislead Thy "For, if Thou dost leave (any of) them, they will but mislead Thy devotees, and they will breed none but wicked ungrateful ones.

28. "O my Lord! Forgive me, my parents, all who enter my house in "O my Lord! Forgive me, my parents, all who enter my house in Faith, and (all) believing men and believing women: and to the wrongdoers grant Thou no increase but in perdition!"

Surah 72. The Jinn, Sprites 1. Say: It has been revealed to me that a company of Jinns listened Say: It has been revealed to me that a company of Jinns listened (to the Qur'an). They said, 'We have really heard a wonderful Recital!

6. 'True, there were persons among mankind who took shelter with 'True, there were persons among mankind who took shelter with persons among the Jinns, but they increased them in folly.

10. 'And we understand not whether ill is intended to those on earth, 'And we understand not whether ill is intended to those on earth, or whether their Lord (really) intends to guide them to right conduct.

11. 'There are among us some that are righteous, and some the 'There are among us some that are righteous, and some the contrary: we follow divergent paths.

12. 'But we think that we can by no means frustrate Allah throughout 'But we think that we can by no means frustrate Allah throughout the earth, nor can we frustrate Him by flight.

13. 'And as for us, since we have listened to the Guidance, we have 'And as for us, since we have listened to the Guidance, we have accepted it: and any who believes in his Lord has no fear, either of a short (account) or of any injustice.

14. 'Amongst us are some that submit their wills (to Allah., and some 'Amongst us are some that submit their wills (to Allah., and some that swerve from justice. Now those who submit their wills - they have sought out (the path) of right conduct: 15. 'But those who swerve,-they are (but) fuel for h.e.l.l-fire'- 'But those who swerve,-they are (but) fuel for h.e.l.l-fire'-16. (And Allah's Message is): "If they (the Pagans) had (only) (And Allah's Message is): "If they (the Pagans) had (only) remained on the (right) Way, We should certainly have bestowed on them Rain in abundance.

17. "That We might try them by that (means). But if any turns away "That We might try them by that (means). But if any turns away from the remembrance of his Lord, He will cause him to undergo a severe Penalty.

18. "And the places of wors.h.i.+p are for Allah (alone): So invoke not "And the places of wors.h.i.+p are for Allah (alone): So invoke not any one along with Allah.

19. "Yet when the Devotee of Allah stands forth to invoke Him, they "Yet when the Devotee of Allah stands forth to invoke Him, they just make round him a dense crowd."

20. Say: "I do no more than invoke my Lord, and I join not with Him Say: "I do no more than invoke my Lord, and I join not with Him any (false G.o.d)."

21. Say: "It is not in my power to cause you harm, or to bring you to Say: "It is not in my power to cause you harm, or to bring you to right conduct."

22. Say: "No one can deliver me from Allah (If I were to disobey Say: "No one can deliver me from Allah (If I were to disobey Him), nor should I find refuge except in Him, [image]

23. "Unless I proclaim what I receive from Allah and His Messages: "Unless I proclaim what I receive from Allah and His Messages: for any that disobey Allah and His Messenger,-for them is h.e.l.l: they shall dwell therein for ever."

24. At length, when they see (with their own eyes) that which they At length, when they see (with their own eyes) that which they are promised,-then will they know who it is that is weakest in (his) helper and least important in point of numbers.

25. Say: "I know not whether the (Punishment) which ye are Say: "I know not whether the (Punishment) which ye are promised is near, or whether my Lord will appoint for it a distant term.

26. "He (alone) knows the Unseen, nor does He make any one "He (alone) knows the Unseen, nor does He make any one acquainted with His Mysteries,-27. "Except an apostle whom He has chosen: and then He makes a "Except an apostle whom He has chosen: and then He makes a band of watchers march before him and behind him, 28. "That He may know that they have (truly) brought and delivered "That He may know that they have (truly) brought and delivered the Messages of their Lord: and He surrounds (all the mysteries) that are with them, and takes account of every single thing."

Surah 73. The Enshrouded One, Bundled Up 1. O thou folded in garments! O thou folded in garments!

2. Stand (to prayer) by night, but not all night,- Stand (to prayer) by night, but not all night,-3. Half of it,-or a little less, Half of it,-or a little less, 4. Or a little more; and recite the Qur'an in slow, measured rhythmic Or a little more; and recite the Qur'an in slow, measured rhythmic tones.

5. Soon shall We send down to thee a weighty Message. Soon shall We send down to thee a weighty Message.

6. Truly the rising by night is most potent for governing (the soul), Truly the rising by night is most potent for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (framing) the Word (of Prayer and Praise).

7. True, there is for thee by day prolonged occupation with ordinary True, there is for thee by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties: 8. But keep in remembrance the name of thy Lord and devote thyself But keep in remembrance the name of thy Lord and devote thyself to Him whole-heartedly.

9. (He is) Lord of the East and the West: there is no G.o.d but He: take (He is) Lord of the East and the West: there is no G.o.d but He: take Him therefore for (thy) Disposer of Affairs.

10. And have patience with what they say, and leave them with n.o.ble And have patience with what they say, and leave them with n.o.ble (dignity).

11. And leave Me (alone to deal with) those in possession of the good And leave Me (alone to deal with) those in possession of the good things of life, who (yet) deny the Truth; and bear with them for a little while.

12. With Us are Fetters (to bind them), and a Fire (to burn them), With Us are Fetters (to bind them), and a Fire (to burn them), 13. And a Food that chokes, and a Penalty Grievous. And a Food that chokes, and a Penalty Grievous.

14. One Day the earth and the mountains will be in violent One Day the earth and the mountains will be in violent commotion. And the mountains will be as a heap of sand poured out and flowing down.

15. We have sent to you, (O men!) an apostle, to be a witness We have sent to you, (O men!) an apostle, to be a witness concerning you, even as We sent an apostle to Pharaoh.

16. But Pharaoh disobeyed the apostle; so We seized him with a But Pharaoh disobeyed the apostle; so We seized him with a heavy Punishment.

17. Then how shall ye, if ye deny ((Allah)), guard yourselves against Then how shall ye, if ye deny ((Allah)), guard yourselves against a Day that will make children h.o.a.ry-headed?-18. Whereon the sky will be cleft asunder? His Promise needs must Whereon the sky will be cleft asunder? His Promise needs must be accomplished.

19. Verily this is an Admonition: therefore, whoso will, let him take a Verily this is an Admonition: therefore, whoso will, let him take a (straight) path to his Lord!

20. Thy Lord doth know that thou standest forth (to prayer) nigh Thy Lord doth know that thou standest forth (to prayer) nigh two-thirds of the night, or half the night, or a third of the night, and so doth a party of those with thee. But Allah doth appoint night and day in due measure He knoweth that ye are unable to keep count thereof. So He hath turned to you (in mercy): read ye, therefore, of the Qur'an as much as may be easy for you. He knoweth that there may be (some) among you in ill-health; others travelling through the land, seeking of Allah's bounty; yet others fighting in Allah's Cause, read ye, therefore, as much of the Qur'an as may be easy (for you); and establish regular Prayer and give regular Charity; and loan to Allah a Beautiful Loan. And whatever good ye send forth for your souls ye shall find it in Allah's Presence,-yea, better and greater, in Reward and seek ye the Grace of Allah. for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Surah 74. The Cloaked One, The Man Wearing A Cloak 1. O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)!

2. Arise and deliver thy warning! Arise and deliver thy warning!

3. And thy Lord do thou magnify! And thy Lord do thou magnify!

4. And thy garments keep free from stain! And thy garments keep free from stain!

5. And all abomination shun! And all abomination shun!

6. Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)!

7. But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant!

8. Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 9. That will be-that Day - a Day of Distress,- That will be-that Day - a Day of Distress,-10. Far from easy for those without Faith. Far from easy for those without Faith.

11. Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!-12. To whom I granted resources in abundance, To whom I granted resources in abundance, 13. And sons to be by his side!- And sons to be by his side!-14. To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable!

15. Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);-16. By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory!

17. Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities!

18. For he thought and he plotted;- For he thought and he plotted;-19. And woe to him! How he plotted!- And woe to him! How he plotted!-20. Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!-21. Then he looked round; Then he looked round; 22. Then he frowned and he scowled; Then he frowned and he scowled; 23. Then he turned back and was haughty; Then he turned back and was haughty; 24. Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 25. "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!"

26. Soon will I cast him into h.e.l.l-Fire! Soon will I cast him into h.e.l.l-Fire!

27. And what will explain to thee what h.e.l.l-Fire is? And what will explain to thee what h.e.l.l-Fire is?

28. Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!-29. Darkening and changing the colour of man! Darkening and changing the colour of man!

30. Over it are Nineteen. Over it are Nineteen.

31. And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,-in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,-and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this ?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind.

32. Nay, verily: By the Moon, Nay, verily: By the Moon, 33. And by the Night as it retreateth, And by the Night as it retreateth, 34. And by the Dawn as it s.h.i.+neth forth,- And by the Dawn as it s.h.i.+neth forth,-35. This is but one of the mighty (portents), This is but one of the mighty (portents), 36. A warning to mankind,- A warning to mankind,-37. To any of you that chooses to press forward, or to follow behind;- To any of you that chooses to press forward, or to follow behind;-38. Every soul will be (held) in pledge for its deeds. Every soul will be (held) in pledge for its deeds.

39. Except the Companions of the Right Hand. Except the Companions of the Right Hand.

40. (They will be) in Gardens (of Delight): they will question each (They will be) in Gardens (of Delight): they will question each other, 41. And (ask) of the Sinners: And (ask) of the Sinners: 42. "What led you into h.e.l.l Fire?" "What led you into h.e.l.l Fire?"

43. They will say: "We were not of those who prayed; They will say: "We were not of those who prayed; 44. "Nor were we of those who fed the indigent; "Nor were we of those who fed the indigent; 45. "But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers; "But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers; 46. "And we used to deny the Day of Judgment, "And we used to deny the Day of Judgment, 47. "Until there came to us (the Hour) that is certain." "Until there came to us (the Hour) that is certain."

48. Then will no intercession of (any) intercessors profit them. Then will no intercession of (any) intercessors profit them.

49. Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from admonition?-50. As if they were affrighted a.s.ses, As if they were affrighted a.s.ses, 51. Fleeing from a lion! Fleeing from a lion!

52. Forsooth, each one of them wants to be given scrolls (of Forsooth, each one of them wants to be given scrolls (of revelation) spread out!

53. By no means! But they fear not the Hereafter, By no means! But they fear not the Hereafter, 54. Nay, this surely is an admonition: Nay, this surely is an admonition: 55. Let any who will, keep it in remembrance! Let any who will, keep it in remembrance!

56. But none will keep it in remembrance except as Allah wills: He is But none will keep it in remembrance except as Allah wills: He is the Lord of Righteousness, and the Lord of Forgiveness.

Surah 75. The Rising Of The Dead, Resurrection 1. I do call to witness the Resurrection Day; I do call to witness the Resurrection Day; 2. And I do call to witness the self-reproaching spirit: (Eschew Evil). And I do call to witness the self-reproaching spirit: (Eschew Evil).

3. Does man think that We cannot a.s.semble his bones? Does man think that We cannot a.s.semble his bones?

4. Nay, We are able to put together in perfect order the very tips of Nay, We are able to put together in perfect order the very tips of his fingers.

5. But man wishes to do wrong (even) in the time in front of him. But man wishes to do wrong (even) in the time in front of him.

6. He questions: "When is the Day of Resurrection?" He questions: "When is the Day of Resurrection?"

7. At length, when the sight is dazed, At length, when the sight is dazed, 8. And the moon is buried in darkness. And the moon is buried in darkness.

9. And the sun and moon are joined together,- And the sun and moon are joined together,-10. That Day will Man say: "Where is the refuge?" That Day will Man say: "Where is the refuge?"

11. By no means! No place of safety! By no means! No place of safety!

12. Before thy Lord (alone), that Day will be the place of rest. Before thy Lord (alone), that Day will be the place of rest.

13. That Day will Man be told (all) that he put forward, and all that he That Day will Man be told (all) that he put forward, and all that he put back.

14. Nay, man will be evidence against himself, Nay, man will be evidence against himself, 15. Even though he were to put up his excuses. Even though he were to put up his excuses.

16. Move not thy tongue concerning the (Qur'an) to make haste Move not thy tongue concerning the (Qur'an) to make haste therewith.

17. It is for Us to collect it and to promulgate it: It is for Us to collect it and to promulgate it: 18. But when We have promulgated it, follow thou its recital (as But when We have promulgated it, follow thou its recital (as promulgated): 19. Nay more, it is for Us to explain it (and make it clear): Nay more, it is for Us to explain it (and make it clear): 20. Nay, (ye men!) but ye love the fleeting life, Nay, (ye men!) but ye love the fleeting life, 21. And leave alone the Hereafter. And leave alone the Hereafter.

22. Some faces, that Day, will beam (in brightness and beauty);- Some faces, that Day, will beam (in brightness and beauty);-23. Looking towards their Lord; Looking towards their Lord; 24. And some faces, that Day, will be sad and dismal, And some faces, that Day, will be sad and dismal, 25. In the thought that some back-breaking calamity was about to be In the thought that some back-breaking calamity was about to be inflicted on them; 26. Yea, when (the soul) reaches to the collar-bone (in its exit), Yea, when (the soul) reaches to the collar-bone (in its exit), 27. And there will be a cry, "Who is a magician (to restore him)?" And there will be a cry, "Who is a magician (to restore him)?"

28. And he will conclude that it was (the Time) of Parting; And he will conclude that it was (the Time) of Parting; 29. And one leg will be joined with another: And one leg will be joined with another: 30. That Day the Drive will be (all) to thy Lord! That Day the Drive will be (all) to thy Lord!

31. So he gave nothing in charity, nor did he pray!- So he gave nothing in charity, nor did he pray!-32. But on the contrary, he rejected Truth and turned away! But on the contrary, he rejected Truth and turned away!

33. Then did he stalk to his family in full conceit! Then did he stalk to his family in full conceit!

34. Woe to thee, (O men!), yea, woe! Woe to thee, (O men!), yea, woe!
