Another Chance(5)

Delphine was abnormally quiet as she was escorted away, although she glared at Brendel like a poisonous viper. It made Brendel shudder a little. Honestly, if he wasn’t so concerned about his relations.h.i.+p with Veronica, he would have executed this woman. Bad blood with the chancellor was inevitable anyways, and he did not think the Kirrlutzians would dare declare war on Aouine over a woman.

Laurenna watched as Delphine was taken away, the knight wanted to say something but was unable to speak at the moment, it would naturally be somewhat displeasing to be treated in such a manner as the imperial messenger, but the problem was that she did not seem to have the right to be displeased.

She thought for a while before saying somewhat weakly, “My Lord, I hope you will carefully consider the way you deal with the empire.”

“I understand, but that also depends on who it is. I know the difference between an enemy and a friend, and I can only say that Lord Veronica chose the wrong person for the wrong mission this time.” Brendel replied.

He gestured to Ciel, and then Laurenna and Filas, who were spellbound in their chairs, felt their bonds loosen. The knight was fine and managed to maintain her composure, but her fiancé could not help but let out a long sigh and stare at Brendel a little fearfully.

He had suffered a lot at the hands of the Prime Minister’s daughter along the way because of his sweet-talking, but he did not expect such a terrifying woman to be locked up into the black dungeon by this inhumane guy. If it were himself, he would not have that, Delphine’s beauty was famous throughout the empire.

Thinking of this, Filas could not help but look at Brendel again with some trepidation. In his eyes, he had already decided that he was one of those legendary barbarians from the barbaric wilderness – no, not just a barbarian, perhaps even a chieftain. No matter how beautiful a woman was, she meant nothing to a rude man like him, and in some of the knight’s novels, these barbarians were even depicted as preferring men.

The young knight’s thoughts filled his mind and he could not help but take one more look at Ciel who had been controlling him and Laurenna with spells; a thoughtful expression appeared on his face.

Of course, Brendel did not know this man in front of him, famous for his stupidity and luck, was spinning with weird thoughts. He was not named ‘famous idiot’ by Brendel. Rather, it was the real t.i.tle of the man known in history as Kirrlutz’s first s.h.i.+tty knight.

First of all, he had defeated many of the best sons and daughters of the major n.o.ble families from within Kirrlutz. Married to Laurenna, the most talented and beautiful girl in Kirrlutz – Laurenna’s future achievements in Kirrlutz could even be compared to that of Freya in Aouine, or even higher, as she had achieved much more than that. If he remembered correctly, Laurenna had later succeeded as the Azure Skies’ main and second-in-command together with Faina.

That would have been shocking enough, but Filas’ good fortune did not end there. Unlike all the other n.o.ble children who grew up amid intrigue, this man’s succession to his t.i.tle was a smooth ride. As the only heir of Prince Barrano, he had no compet.i.tion or pressure. Such an uneventful path would be enough to make all those around him filled with jealousy.

Later on, he was called by the emperor to partic.i.p.ate in the Holy War, and then after spending a long period in the front line in the ‘No War on the Eastern Front’ experience, he somehow had a series of victories, and finally, his acc.u.mulated war merits earned him the throne of Imperial Army head.

He was known as the army leader picked off the side of a road.

And then, with the pa.s.sing of time, Mr. Filas became a powerful figure. And his story had already become the most legendary story among the bards.

Now, the couple from the legends sat before him. Laurenna was no more than a small knight in Veronica’s service, and Filas was even more of an idle dude. The two of them had not even begun on their journey, and currently, Brendel seemed more like a legend to them. At least after the first battle of Ampere Seale, Brendel’s reputation in Kirrlutz had become far more than just a swordsman.

Brendel scrutinized the two of them, and only after a while did he pick up the envelope on the table, take a look at it, and ask the female knight a question.

“Ms. Laurenna, may I ask when the Kirrlutzians become aware of this?”

Laurenna looked at him and reacted with a slight startle. She frowned a bit and replied, “Two months ago, my Lord.”

This conversation was about the second thing in Veronica’s letter to Brendel. Compared to the feathery weight of the first matter, this second matter was much trickier in Brendel’s opinion.

It began with the Battle of Ampere Seale. During that battle, the Aouines eventually shattered three of the Door of Flames and sent the Devils rolling back home down the Sulfur River – a part of the story that Brendel, of course, experienced firsthand. The Devil armies were routed and scattered, then dispersed completely by the Silver Elves and Highland Knights, and the Craft Mages who arrived.

But a small portion survived, fleeing into the mountains and wilderness of Aouine. This small portion, however, caused a huge problem for the Kirrlutzian.

The whole matter should have come to an end after the Kirrlutzians were forced to retreat from the port of Ampere Seale as a matter of honor.

But no one could have imagined that history would unfold as it has since.

Around the new moon, monks from the Holy Cathedral of Fire, after thoroughly cleaning up the battlefield, discovered that all three Door of Flames were missing in various degrees. These missing Door of Flames were quickly sent back to Kirrlutz for the high-level bishops to identify, but half a month later, it was confirmed that the entire Holy Cathedral of Fire was in a nightmare.

The missing parts of the three Door of Flames were almost exactly enough to form a new portal.

So it became obvious. It meant that at least one or more gangs of Devils, Cavedwellers, Evil Cultists, or something similar from underneath Jorgendy Ridge was taking these fragments and preparing to do something not-so-subtle in Aouine’s territory.

For the Holy Cathedral of Fire, this was a ridiculous joke.

Or rather it was simply a resounding slap on the face of the Holy Cathedral of Fire. Even Brendel did not know exactly how to react when he saw this news, not to mention the others, although it was nearly an open secret that the Holy Cathedral of Fire had been infiltrated by All for One, he did not expect the other party to tolerate it to this extent.

It was no wonder that the power core of the Kirrlutz Empire was becoming more and more biased towards royal power day by day. Faced with such an enemy, it was a bit difficult for the Silver Queen to not win.

Brendel silently thought for a moment, then shook the letter in his hand. Now, in his heart, he was almost certain that Veronica must be having trouble sleeping and eating at this moment. If it was possible, he was afraid that the army chief would rather not have this letter delivered to him, as the Kirrlutzian had never lost so much pride continuously in centuries.

But the problem was, there was a group of people running around with pieces of these Portals right now, ready to find an energy core to build them back up. Veronica could not just ignore it.

It was not a serious problem for Aouine. After all, if they could take care of three Portals, they could obviously take out one of the broken temporary Portals. But it was a big problem for the Holy Cathedral of Fire, no matter when or where these cultists had built this Portal up.

Even if it was built in a pigsty in a random countryside in Aouine, the Holy Cathedral of Fire would not be able to hold its head up in front of the other major cathedrals for half a century. As for the Holy War, don’t even think of continuing that. Might as well take a break, hang up the exemption card and hand over all the benefits.

Moreover, the issue of pride was second to none, such an event for the reputation of the Holy Cathedral of Fire was the biggest blow, it will inevitably shake many people’s faith. Brendel didn’t think that the majority that make up the followers of the Holy Cathedral of Fire, peasants and craftsmen, was strongly rooted in their faith, and once faith was collapsed, it would be difficult to rebuild.

But that was not the biggest disaster. The worst possibility for the Kirrlutzians was undoubtedly these Evil Cultists bringing the Portal shards back to the Kirrlutz Empire, and with Marsha high above, just imagining that scenario could probably give the Holy Cathedral of Fire nightmares.

Not to mention the Devils might get these fragments to study and replicate – although this was highly unlikely, if it succeeds, it was likely that the top bra.s.s of the Holy Cathedral of Fire would have to die to cleanse away their sins.

If it was not for such a severe state of affairs, the proud Lady of the Sword Saint of Youth would not have inadvertently requested for him to help hold down the Holy Cathedral of Fire. Honestly speaking, Brendel ,as a citizen of Aouine, was delighted at seeing the Kirrlutzians humiliated. But Veronica’s meant that she wanted him to help out of past friends.h.i.+p.

If one were to say who was the most powerful person in the Aouine South today, it would naturally be him and the princess, who had the support of the Highland Knights, Duke Anthony, and the many Southern Legions. That was why this letter was sent to him and Princess Gryphine.

Thinking of Veronica, Brendel could not help but sigh.

To be honest, that female army leader of the Kirrlutz Empire had left him with a pretty good impression. Besides, there was Faina, and he knew privately that brash lady considered him a friend.

“Did the Azure Skies enter Aouine right after you found out, ?” He thought for a moment and then asked.

“No, in fact, it was a great person from the Holy Cathedral of Fire who commissioned Lord Veronica to help. I’m not too sure who exactly it was. Because this matter is so important, not many people within the empire even knew about it.” Laurenna replied.

Brendel could not help but shake his head, “You too, know that it is an important matter, but the person sent to act as a messenger seems to be lacking in consideration.”

The female knight was slightly startled and immediately wanted to stop talking.
