VOLUME 9 CHAPTER 71: DON’T TELL ME THIS IS THE BATTLE OUTSIDE XINYE CITY (6)

Li Dian POV

As I thought so, I steeled myself as I raised my spear and pointed it at Guan Yu. Since she has said as much, I cannot call myself a warrior if I do not meet her in combat seriously.

“That’s more like it.” Guan Yu nodded and readied her stance.

Do not think about how to escape, do not think about the difference in power. All I need to think about now is how to defeat Guan Yu. Everything else will come later. As these thoughts ran in my head, I steadied my breathing. The wound on my forehead hurt but it was not bad enough to affect my functioning.

Next, what I need to do is to dodge the first incoming attack and see if I can attack her from her blind spot. If I am unable to, then I will try to attack her from the other side.

“Lord Guan Yu!!”

Un?

“Eh!”

Just as I was prepared to fight to the death, a surprised yell came from not far off. Compared to my hesitation and vigilance, Guan Yu panicked and looked over where the voice came from.

“Little sister!” She called out anxiously as I too looked over.

“Lord Guan Yu!”

Amidst the flying dust and sea of people, a single Serpent Spear flew about. *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* Clas.h.i.+ng sounds rang out constantly as the Serpent Spear was swung left and right without any rhythm or technique.

It was not just that, that tender voice that called out like a child who was looking for her parents continuously came from the direction where the Serpent Spear was. I looked over and saw a young la.s.s with braids to the side holding the Serpent Spear. She was being forced back as she defended against a barrage of attacks and was unable to counter whatsoever.

Is that Zhang Fei?! And… The one attacking is actually Lu Xiang?!

When I recognised who they were, I was thoroughly shocked at how dominant Lu Xiang was. Be it what I heard or what I personally saw, Zhang Fei has always been a heroic and ferocious warrior. Back when we surrounded Xu state city, Zhang Fei was the only one who was able to break through the surround of several tens of thousand. In short, she is most definitely a talent that ranks among Xu Chu and the like.

I initially thought that this girl was someone else but every time she deflected an attack with her Serpent Spear, her hilt was practically unmoving. Clearly, she had prodigious strength. Who could it be other than Zhang Fei? Yet, her appearance now is like that of a certain Registrar under the Imperial Chancellor who has never appeared on the battlefield.

Yes, I admit it. I hate that Yang Xiu.

“Return my big brother to me!” Lu Xiang yelled. Looks like she has either been consumed by battle or overcome by grief. During the most crucial moments in battle, the most unrefined human emotions will leak out into the surface. Even I acted up like this, much less Lu Xiang who has lost much more in this battle.

“Little sister! I’m coming!” Guan Yu turned her horse around and yelled as I was preoccupied my thoughts. Naturally, I will not let her go this easily.

“Don’t think you can leave, Guan Yu! Yaa!”

*Dang*!

A clear sound rang out as I applied a lot more strength into my attack. Guan Yu raised her glaive to defend against the attack but it was obvious that she was not focused and her emotions had begun to run wild because of what was happening to Zhang Fei.

“Trying to run away before the duel is settled?!” I yelled out. I do not know if it achieved the same effect as it did on me but Guan Yu frowned, a departure from her stern, calm countenance from before.

I do not know what happened but it seems l
ike Zhang Fei’s condition is not too good. In that case, I might be able to do something…

“Wahh!” I yelled as I pulled my spear back and attacked from the side. My attack was blocked but I did not stop there and kept aiming for vitals.

Every attack was neutralised but Guan Yu was not focused unlike before. As she said, not concentrating on the fight is a grave sin for a warrior. But sometimes, people cannot help themselves.

Of course, even under these circ.u.mstances, I know that it is impossible for me to achieve victory. All I am aiming for is to create an opening and make it past Guan Yu so I can double down on breaking through the surround, I thought as I looked into the distance for any signs of the cavalry.

Ah! Luckily, the “旷” flag could be seen in the distance. It was still too far however, and could not draw away enemy attention. If it could come another 100 paces or so closer, then we could have a chance to break through the surround.

Just a bit more, just a bit more. Lu Xiang, cavalry troops, and everyone, hang on!

“Yaa!” I yelled as I continued the onslaught against Guan Yu, ignoring my sweat-drenched hair flying about, with hope burning in my heart. My arms felt like lead but I cannot give Guan Yu any leeway to notice what the cavalry were doing.

“Yaa!”

“Little sister!”

Just then, Zhang Fei let out a cry and Guan Yu yelled as she looked over. I did as well and saw that Zhang Fei’s spear was knocked away by Lu Xiang, exposing all of her vitals and her head.

“Little sister!”

“You’re not going anywhere!”

Guan Yu raised her glaive and made to head over but naturally I could not let her go and stabbed–

*Ka*! The spear broke and pain a.s.saulted my arms which trembled uncontrollably. When I looked down, I saw that my spear was split in 2 by Guan Yu.

The glaive and a pair of enraged eyes flashed in my eyes. When I blinked, Guan Yu was gone. In that instant, I could feel that my heart stopped and I involuntarily gulped as I threw away my broken spear with my hands which trembled from the sheer strength of the attack and fear as I drew my sword.

After hacking down the incoming enemies, I looked over at where Zhang Fei was and chased after Guan Yu. From how things look, it’s impossible for Guan Yu to catch up. There is still more than 50 paces between them. Even if she forces the horse to gallop at top speed with a wide pace, she still has to cover 30 paces at least.

“Lu Xiang! Do it!” I yelled out to Lu Xiang when I realised this.

“Haa!” Lu Xiang roared as she pulled back her spear before Zhang Fei could recover and aimed for her chest with a 2-handed stab.

“Don’t think you can do it!” “Haa!”

Un! Just as the attack was about to connect, a longsword came out in front of Zhang Fei and blocked the spear. At the same time, the other person burst into the scene like a whirlwind and stabbed a gleaming blade at Lu Xiang.

“Wu!” Lu Xiang groaned as she was forced back. The whirlwind slipped itself between Lu Xiang and the other a.s.sailant and stopped the other a.s.sailant’s horse. When I looked at the 2 newcomers, I saw that one had their face covered by thick, black dirt while the other had a barbarian headdress on but was wearing plain robes. Could it be that they have barbarian reinforcements?

Kuh, we failed huh?! I was very unsatisfied and looked to the side where I saw Guan Yu not too far from where I was. However, it seems like Guan Yu was concerned about Zhang Fei’s status which meant that I might be able to catch her off guard now.

As I thought so, I looked to the other side.

Un?! The cavalry had bore its way deeply into enemy ranks by now and there were numerous “旷” and “翔” flags standing behind enemy lines. The surrounding enemies were also diminis.h.i.+ng in number and our side’s officers were all gathered around.

I looked at Guan Yu and looked back at everyone behind me. I have made a lot of mistakes today, I should refrain from making more out of my hastiness. As I thought so, I closed my eyes and steeled myself before yelling toward the troops behind me–

“Everyone! Charge over there with me!” I swung my reins down hard and galloped in the opposite direction where Guan Yu was headed after I yelled.

“Lu Xiang!” I yelled to Lu Xiang but she did not listen and continued fighting with the 2 newcomers with Guan Yu fast approaching her. If it came down to a 1-on-3 fight, she would definitely not prevail.

When I took a closer look, I saw that Lu Xiang was mad with rage. Does that fellow have no intention of escaping!?

“Lu Xiang!!” I yelled out without thinking, “Your elder brother is waiting for you on the way back!”

“Ah…” Lu Xiang finally heard me and stopped in a daze for a single moment before charging over to where I was. When I saw this, I hurriedly led the troops towards the hole to break through the surround.

“Ah! Don’t think you can get away!” The whirlwind woman yelled when she saw this and sprinted over rapidly

I turned back and saw that she had leapt into the air and was somersaulting as she slashed down. Even though she was not on a horse, a single leap was enough for her to close the distance between us.

“Yaa!”

When I turned back again, the blade was already at the tip of my nose.
