The two doctors returned: "Sir, we recommend that you get an ultrasound."
Befuddled, Mu Yifan asked, "Ultrasound?"
He still had one month left before becoming a full-fledged zombie. Besides, his heart was still alive and beating. Since an ultrasound shouldn't pose any problem, he complied and the doctor quickly wrote him a referral.
Because a small hospital meant that there were fewer patients compared to a bigger hospital, all he had to do was pay the fee and queue for about ten minutes. Very soon, it was his turn.
The doctor in charge was a female. She applied a layer of ultrasound gel on his body and then scanned him carefully. Instantly, her eyes flashed with shock and bewilderment. Sweeping a glance across Mu Yifan's taut chest muscles and his Adam's apple, she muttered: "Maybe a tranny?"
With his sharp hearing, Mu Yifan looked up at her suspiciously: "What tranny?"
The doctor ignored him, with eyes full of seriousness and doubt. A while later, she removed the ultrasound scanner and merely replied, "Retrieve your report in half an hour."
During the waiting period, Zhan Beitian left and went to a nearby restaurant for breakfast. Afraid that he'll vomit again and ruin Zhan Beitian's appet.i.te, Mu Yifan didn't accompany him. Not to mention, there was no point in eating if there were more tests to undergo.
By the time Zhan Beitian came back, the test result was ready.
Unable to comprehend the report, Mu Yifan headed back to the emergency room to search for his doctor.
Taking a good look at it, the doctor stuttered: "This… this…"
Mu Yifan grew more anxious. He wasn't afraid of any illnesses, only that the doctor will notice his transformation and cause him to lose his life.
Finally, unable to stand the doctor's daze, he impatiently demanded: "Look, doc. Can you jump straight to the point and tell me what kind of illness that I have? Got something to say but not saying it is making me all nervous. Even if I wasn't sick, you'll end up making me sick."
The doctor snapped back to reality and quickly responded: "Apologies."
He cleared his throat and continued: "Mr. Mu, according my previous diagnosis, you have a slippery pulse, meaning that you are p.r.o.ne to anemia, arthritis, acute viral infections, acute gastroenteritis, cirrhotic ascites, etc. Besides those, if a healthy woman has a slippery pulse, it is deducible that pregnancy is the underlying cause of those symptoms. You…"
Mu Yifan interjected: "Doc, I don't understand what you're saying. Just tell me what illness I got."
The doctor hastily replied, "You're pregnant."
Silence sank in.
He widened his eyes and stared at the doctor, unable to process what he had just heard.
Even Zhan Beitian, who had experienced the apocalypse and witnessed many things that were unexplainable by science, wore an expression of shock.
Stared down and pressured by both of them, the doctor eventually compelled himself to explain: "I know that this sounds out of this world, but ultrasound doesn't lie. It clearly showed that although Mr. Mu doesn't have a uterus, he is already three months pregnant."
T/N: I don’t know why the ER western med doctor checked his pulse the Trad Chn Med way. Maybe they combine the two practices in China? Doctors and nurses will, for example, tell you not to consume cold fluids during winter to avoid upsetting the yin-yang balance in your body. Makes zero sense because of homeostasis. And yes, it sucks to drink warm bubble tea.
