"How did you do that?" The voice asked with what seemed like controlled anger. I didn't answer, not wanting to give away my location as I was still edging sideways.

"Here let me give you some light, we wouldn't want you b.u.mping into anything and hurt yourself, I know you have a habit of falling down." His voice was smooth but finished with a rough edge. A candle lit somewhere close to me and I could only see the s.p.a.ce around me. An orange glow spread out fading into the darkness and my eyes squinted to adapt to the small circle of light. I moved a little bit more thinking if only I could find another door I could then make a run for it. My foot knocked on something but I steadied myself on the wall behind me.

"Careful Keira!" The voice knew my name? It was definitely a man's voice, as it was far too deep to be a woman's, yet I still didn't recognise its roughness. It moved around the room making it hard to pinpoint a location but I couldn't just wait here for him to get to me even though he obviously knew where I was as the light was bouncing off my skin making me glow. Another flame lit up my way but I could only make out the wall and floor. I kept side stepping feeling my way along when the voice spoke again.

"I wouldn't keep moving that way if I were you." It sounded like a threat but it didn't stop me, I could feel I was getting close to something as the air had changed.

"What do you want?" I said gaining some more courage.

"Isn't it obvious...why the very reason you came here... back to me." I took four large steps away from the voice but in the dark I couldn't see as the candlelight didn't reach as far as I had travelled. I hit something waist height, nearly falling over and was going to tumble over it when a hand reached out and grabbed me, stopping me from falling. Strong hands pulled me back and in one swift movement had me twisted around and pressed me solidly up against the wall.

He gently held the back of my head with one hand so I wouldn't bang it against the stone my body was now leaning on. His body leaned close and his hand slid down from my head to my neck making its way to the front. He held his thumb on my throat without applying too much pressure. It seemed to be calming my breathing as I was panicking on the inside but on the outside my body remained calm. We were still in the dark and I couldn't see the face in front of me but I felt as though I was outside again. I wondered if the thing I had nearly fallen over was another balcony? If that was the case, whoever was stood opposite me now had just saved my life. I relaxed my muscles and the voice responded.

"That's it, easy now." His other hand held my shoulder back as I tried to wrestle free from his hold. His hand gripped my shoulder like a vice but he never once hurt me.

"I asked you, what it is you want?" I said trying to sound more angry than scared.

"Don't be frightened Keira, I would never hurt you." I don't know why but I trusted his words. Maybe it was down to the calming effect the movement his thumb was still making on my throat. His hand relaxed on my shoulder and moved down to my waist but again when I tried to move away his hand flashed to my side holding me still against the wall.

"Be still!" He said with clear frustration in his voice.

"You want to know what it is I want but first you will answer one of my questions." His face bent down to mine and felt so close I could smell his sweet intoxicating breath invade my senses.

"What...what do you want to know?" I said shaking my head as I couldn't think of anything I could offer him.

"Why did you come here?" He asked softly. I hesitated and tried to look away but his hand slid up my top to get to my sides sending sparks of heat up my body. My chest rose heavily with the feeling and I let out a whispered moan, which made him show his teeth. I couldn't help but stare at a perfect white set but it was the larger canines that had me gulping. Did he have fangs? When I didn't answer he tried harder to provoke one from me and with his other hand he released my neck and stroked my cheek saying "Come now little one, tell me." I tried to think of a different answer than the truth but in the end I just admitted the reason.

"I came here to find Dominic Draven." I said and I was sure I could hear him smile at my answer.

"Is that right, well lucky for you... you found him." I tried one last attempt to move from under him but he was too quick and grabbed my wrist pulling me back to him.

"Oh no you don't." His voice held a hint of the truth but I didn't want to believe it!

"You're lying. Draven wouldn't keep me here like this." I shouted as I tried to see into his eyes but the black night behind only enhanced the dark shape in front of me.

"Oh really... you know me that well do you? Well have you ever thought there is a reason I am keeping you here like this?" His voice sounded different, anger mixed with hurt.

"NO WHY?" I shouted still trying in vain to get free. When he had finally had enough of trying to prevent me from escaping he pushed his body flush with mine, shocking me into remaining still. His body felt warm and his solid muscles tensed back against my small frame. His head bent down to my face and said in earnest, "I'm trying to keep you safe, as I said before you shouldn't be here... not alone anyway."

"Then let me go and I will leave," I said in a whisper.

"I'm afraid it's too late for that, I will have to deal with this in a different way." This didn't sound good so I tried one last plea.

"I'm sorry that I came but please don't." His hands left my body and grabbed my wrists like lightening as I said this.

"Don't do what... hurt you?" He didn't sound happy.

"Get rid of me," I said as a tear started to form in the corner of one eye. He laughed lightly and replied, "Why would I ever want to get rid of you, what would make you say that to me?"

"Because I'm ...I'm broken." I said as the tears got too heavy and fell down my cheeks. He had released my wrists and now used his thumbs to wipe the tears from my skin.

"Well if that is the case, then I guess I will just have to fix you.... but before you go, I owe you an answer to your question." he said stepping away from me and my heart fell back into its normal pace.

"You asked me what I wanted." He said repeating my earlier question but I could barely hear him as the moon had come from behind the cloud, now revealing the awful truth...it was and had been all along... Dominic Draven.

He was removing something from the long jacket he wore and the metal flashed in the moonlight. I froze as he bought the implement closer to my face. I was about to run but as though reading my thoughts he grabbed me once more around the waist picking me up with one arm tightly curled around my torso. He lifted me up to the level of his face until our lips were at the same height. He leaned forward until they nearly touched and his mouth moved over mine as he whispered the answer, "I want you!"

Then suddenly he stabbed me in the neck, jabbing me so hard that I cried out in pain before everything went blurred and my body went limp in his arms.

Chapter 23 Cat fight.

I felt the pain in my neck and cried out, bolting upright, nearly falling out of bed. It took me a few minutes to understand what had happened. I was here back in my room but how did I get here? I rubbed my neck where there was a tiny pinp.r.i.c.k of pain as though I had been bitten by something. I turned on my lamp and looked around the room but there was no evidence that I had moved.

It must have been a dream, but surely it couldn't have been. It had felt way too real. The most real yet. I could still smell Draven on my skin and around my waist was warm from where he had held me so close. I got up and went into the bathroom. As I turned on the light my eyes stung even more at the bright light, so it took me a moment to focus on what I was looking for. I faced the mirror and arched my neck finding a little red lump with a tiny red dot in the middle of it. I rubbed it with my thumb trying to understand what I had just experienced.

I was still shaking my head when I went back to bed and continued to do so when I woke up the next morning. The next day went by in a daze. As if I was a drone being controlled by another part of me, the part that had to conform. I answered when people spoke to me, with the right yes's and head nods but it was like this was my dream and last night had been my reality. I played with the red dot on my neck all day, as if checking it was still there.

Jack had asked me a few times throughout the day if everything was alright and I had answered him as though I was on auto pilot. I walked into history like a ghost, I was still aware that I was being whispered about but the difference today was... I just didn't care!

I sat down next to Sophia and she looked at me with a worried frown.

"Keira, are you all right, you're very pale and you look tired, didn't you sleep well?" I couldn't help the reaction I gave as I let out an almighty laugh. I turned to look at her and she frowned like I was crazy. Maybe she was right, maybe I had finally lost it!

"I'm sorry that was rude of me, the truth is I don't really know if I slept last night." Well if she didn't think I was crazy before she most certainly did now.

"What do you mean you don't know?" She said but her face held a hint of something more, as if she was worried and not just for me. Then she seemed to notice the red mark on my neck and I was sure I saw her shake her head. Maybe she thought I had turned to injecting drugs into my neck and this was the result. One dopey a.r.s.e Keira!

"Never mind, I just had a bad dream, or a good one I can't really explain it but I'm fine. I'm ok, don't worry." She looked sceptical but let it go as Reed entered the cla.s.s.

At the end of the lecture Sophia asked me if I needed a lift home as she had noticed RJ wasn't in today.

"Thanks but its ok I have a lift, Jack picked me up this morning."

"Oh Jack, as in the 'not' boyfriend but wants to be, Jack?" She said this as she looked round to a pa.s.sing student and he stared back at her with a strange tint in his eye. I hadn't noticed the student before but he was coming out of our cla.s.s so maybe it was someone she knew from there.

"Umm, yeah well I mean he's just a friend."

"You really need a car don't you? I bet you would love to have the freedom and not to have to rely on other people all the time." She said as we walked outside together.

"Yeah I would but I think I will need a few more pay packets before that happens, besides I'm just happy that I have a job and a good one at that, so it won't be long." She smiled as though once again I had missed something important. She said something else that sounded like "We'll see" and left, waving as she got in the huge black beast of a Land Drover. I couldn't help but wonder if Draven was also in there, so I lowered my head in shame and memories of last night flooded back to me, making my waist feel warm again from where his arm had wrapped securely around me.

I had regained some normality on the drive home and Jack seemed happier about it. He asked if I was working tonight and when I replied yes, it was obviously not the answer he'd been hoping for. I told him thanks for the lift and waved goodbye as he pulled away.

While at work I remained quiet and most of the time unresponsive. I worked the hours that seemed more like minutes and Draven didn't approach me all night and for once I was happy about it. There was a new feeling I now held for him and I didn't want it to show through. I was now a bit afraid of him. I know I was being stupid but I couldn't help it. He had been so powerful in my dream last night and I had been powerless and weak against him.

I saw his eyes find mine as I walked past his table to go home, but I lowered my face in what must have looked like disappointment. Of course I still felt as strongly for him, if not more so but I didn't know if my heart could take much more, or my mental health. I didn't feel like myself any more. Somewhere along the way I had lost control of my thoughts and it was ever since I had first laid eyes on Dominic Draven.

I went outside to wait for Frank's car to come into view and I sat down out of sight of the doormen. The stone wall was cold and I could feel the wet soaking through the material of my trousers but I didn't care. I needed to get my head straight. I needed to feel like I was in control of my own thoughts and more importantly my own actions. This dream had been different. There was no one that was trying to steal it away from me making it blurry and I didn't know if this was a good thing. I went through so many different accounts of last night and it all kept boiling down to one thing I had said.

I was broken...

I knew that I could never be "Fixed" as he had called it. There was no hope and I couldn't do anything about it, so it was about time that I just accepted it. Surely then I could move on? Tears were slowly following others in its path and before long my cheeks were wet with salty water. I wiped them off with the back of my hand, angry at myself for being so soft.

"Pull yourself together Keira!" I said out loud. Frank would be here soon and I didn't want him seeing me upset. I was good at hiding my feelings. h.e.l.l I was a pro! I was a terrible liar but through lots of practice I could have won an Oscar for acting as though I was fine.

When Frank turned up I played my usual trick of asking him about a game I knew he had seen recently on the box. This lasted me all the way home with just having to nod and say the occasional "Umm," and "Ah" when it was needed.

I don't know why but that night I cried myself to sleep.

I felt better the next day after a dreamless sleep and having a full day between my last one was a little bit comforting. My dreams were getting out of hand so I made the decision that I would make an appointment to speak to a doctor, in order to get some more pills. I was going to beat this obsession, it wasn't healthy and it had to stop! I kept that frame of mind all day as I helped Libby with housework and we both cooked a pie together for tonight's meal. Well I say "We" in the loosest sense of the word, as it was more like I cooked and she talked, keeping me company.

Every now again I did slip up and when Libby asked me what had happened to my neck I dropped the knife I held in my hand, nearly severing off a couple of toes. I told her what I had first thought it could have been.

"Bug bite!" I said pa.s.sing it off as nothing, which was far from the truth.

For the whole two hours leading up to my next s.h.i.+ft I tried to convince myself that I was a waitress and nothing more and I needed to get this sickness out of my head before it got me into even more trouble. Because primarily that was what Draven was...Trouble. I had come here to get away from all of that and so I would have to try to remember that throughout the night.

Of course, as soon as I walked past his table for the first time on my s.h.i.+ft, all my logic went out of my head as though someone had flicked a switch. I scorned myself for not being strong enough to not want him. d.a.m.n him! Why couldn't I find the strength, after all the things I had done and been through.... this I couldn't do!

I was fighting with my mind and my heart trying to get them to co-operate but they were rebelling and as a result I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing. I kept making mistakes, taking orders to the wrong tables and b.u.mping into the other waitresses. In the end I told Karmun that I needed five minutes to sort my head out and he threw a bottle of water at me as though he knew this would be my cure.

Once outside I nearly downed the whole bottle, as I couldn't get rid of the thirst nagging at my throat like I'd swallowed barbed wire. I needed some sort of pain to bring me back to down to the earth I didn't feel part of. I let the anger course through my veins and build up and up until I broke. I punched one of the trees by the door making it shake under the pressure. I had hit it with everything I had, and a sharp twig scratched at my hand and knuckles.

It didn't bleed but it left a mark and I had accomplished my goal, as now I was fully alert to the pain. I knew it wasn't the best idea but it had worked, I now went back to my job without making a pig's ear of it. I buzzed around as I was now back in the zone. I cleared all my tables and replenished them all with drinks again as though I had downed a few espressos. The throbbing in my hand only made me concentrate more and I pulled my glove over my hand to hide my blazing red skin. Ok, so it was going to leave a bruise but I didn't care.

My s.h.i.+ft was soon over and I was saying goodbye to Karmun when my night changed back from bad to good and back to bad again. It was like being on a roller-coaster with a constant stream of up's and down's. Ok, so mostly downs at the moment but considering my foul mood this didn't surprise me!

I had turned too quickly and knocked straight into the blonde... Layla. She dropped her tray, which thankfully was empty, looked down at it and then up at me with fury in her eyes.

I held my hands up saying "Sorry." But that would never be good enough for her so instead I started to walk way giving her s.p.a.ce.

"Where do you think you're going vermin?" She said spitting out her words. I wondered what it was about me that she hated so much. I turned round and said "What did you say?" With my outrage brewing and showing its ugly head.

"You heard me, you parasite!" Her lips curved into a s.a.d.i.s.tic grin.

"Leave it Layla!" Karmun was now getting in on the act, trying to convert tension into peace.

"Stay out of this Kokabiel!" I didn't understand what she called him but it had been effective. He left to stand at the other end of the bar leaving me alone with this nutty girl, who was gladly putting my crazy to shame. She looked down at the tray that was lay on the floor and she nodded to it saying, "Pick it up!" Her words slithered through blood red lips and I half expected a snake's tongue to come out of her filthy mouth.

"NO!" I said folding my arms, determined that this would be one night that I wouldn't back down.

"Pick it up NOW!" Her eyes burned, turning red and blood shot.

"I said NO!" I now was about to walk away from this stupid girl's paddy but she grabbed my arm and dug in long fingernails and twisted them deeper into my skin. I squinted my eyes as the pain was making them water but I still couldn't bring myself to pick it up.

"Do it, I know this hurts." She was sick! I tried to free my arm but she twisted more and I could feel her nail rip into my skin piercing the flesh. I couldn't help the moan of pain but I still managed to say, "I have felt more pain than your little cat scratch." I knew what was coming and waited for more pain to come as I could already feel little drops of blood on my arm soaking into my glove. She smiled at my reply and the sick b.i.t.c.h looked happy about it. I tensed my face not wanting to give her the satisfaction of seeing me hurt when she suddenly dropped her hand to her side. Her face abruptly turned to stone.

"Is there a problem Layla?" Draven's strong authoritative voice boomed behind me, and it was quite clear he was not happy.

"Nn...o...no my lord." She said as she lowered her head in respect. I rubbed my arm as you could see the imprints on my gloves where her nails had gone through the material. d.a.m.n it, another pair of gloves ruined.

"Keira, would you like to add anything to this?" I turned to face him and looked at him with an over emotional face as the anger I felt for them both hadn't yet subsided.

"No, she dropped her tray and that's about the end of it." I said not wanting to make an issue of it. Layla looked at me shocked why I hadn't given her up to Draven. I just figured that there wasn't much point as he didn't look a bit convinced. He soon turned back to her.

"Back to work Lahash, Eu vou tratar con vostede mais tarde!" (Means "I will deal with you later" in Gaelic) He spoke the words so fluently but I didn't have a clue to what he had said or even what language he had used. She understood though, for what he must have said made her cringe and look frightened. I almost felt sorry for her, remembering never to get on the bad side of him. She was about to leave as she backed up lowering her face like he was some kind of sultan. And what was with the "My Lord" bit?

She was about to turn when he pointed to the floor at the tray saying, "Pick it up!" And this time she did without hesitation. I didn't blame her because compared to Draven her anger looked like a kitten next to a sabre tooth tiger.

Once we were alone he pulled me to one side grabbing the arm that she had dug her nails into, so I couldn't help moaning at the feel of pressure. It was also the hand that I hit the tree with so it didn't look good for me. He let go of my arm once he heard the groan that slipped out. He didn't ask me what was wrong he just lifted my arm and examined it. I pulled it away from him and said, "It's fine," and held my hand behind my back.

Draven looked furious and I felt scared being there to witness it. I swallowed hard trying to mask my fear with bravery. He turned his head towards the direction Layla had left and gritted his teeth saying, "Kelba!"(Means"b.i.t.c.h" in Maltese) But again I didn't understand. I wanted to leave but his tall frame blocked my way. I had never seen him so angry and I could have sworn that I saw his eyes flicker to purple but returned quickly to jet-black.

"I'd better be going," I said as I tried to pa.s.s him but he didn't move and my hands started to shake behind my back.

"Wait," he said in a softer tone as though my words had pulled him out of his rage.

"Let me see your arm." He asked and when I didn't move he looked down at me meeting my eyes but I wasn't going to falter. I had had just about enough of being ordered around tonight and I was tired of it!

"I told you it's fine and if I don't go now I will be late for Frank." I said finis.h.i.+ng it with a deep breath only it didn't sound as steady as I had hoped.

"He can wait." He said pus.h.i.+ng it further and the smart thing to do would be to give in but I just couldn't, so I stayed firm and replied, "But I can't, so if you'll excuse me, Sir." And with that I turned my back on him and left down the main staircase. Only my plan didn't work very well as when I got there I was stopped by two of Draven's huge guards. They stood in my way but with my blood boiling from all the humiliation my bravery didn't fade.

"Excuse me!" I said and they looked over me to their Master. I turned looking in the same direction to find Draven's eyes burning into me. His eyes stayed on mine for longer than ever before. I was just about to give in and go back to him when he broke away first, nodding to the men that stood like a wall blocking my path. They parted and let me through but I had a feeling I was going to pay for this at a later date. I nearly ran down the steps and out of the building that felt as though it was consuming my soul. I was sure I could still feel his eyes staring at me until I was out of the main doors.

I couldn't believe what I just did. What was I trying to prove? I had just disobeyed a man like Draven. I really was crazy.

It was raining and I ran for the car parked with the engine cut. Frank had been waiting. This time I couldn't fake anything to Frank so instead I turned to him and said, "I think I just made a big mistake."

"I doubt that but what happened?" He said giving me far too much credit than I deserved. He started the car and pulled out onto the main road.

"I just really p.i.s.sed off my boss."

"You mean Draven?" He was serious but he didn't look as worried as I did.

"The man himself." I said as I held my head up with one hand leaning my elbow on the side window.

"Aww come on, it can't be that bad and he likes you remember?" He said nudging me on my other arm.

"Well if he did, I doubt he does anymore after the show I just put on."

"Christ, you didn't take a swing at him did you?" He said as he'd just noticed my red fist. I laughed at the thought and his worried face straightened.
