58 I’m in the Wrong, but I Don’t Care

It was already noon when Su Ying woke up. She sat up and lifted the curtain to look outside the carriage. The children were still excitedly following Jiang Yang and the other people around to herd the oxen and goats. They had been having fun the whole morning.

“Ji, aren’t you guys tired?”

The older toddler Ji wiped the sweat off his face and said with a laugh, “Mother, we’re not tired.”

During this period, the kids had sufficient food and drinks and also slept well. Thus, their energy levels were much higher than in the past and they gradually recovered their childlike behaviors. Early in the morning, they ran around the oxen and goats and laughed and played for the whole day.

Su Ying didn’t stop them. She felt that children looked more lively and energetic when they ran and jumped.

She took a water bag, jumped off the carriage, and went up to wipe the children’s sweat. “Go into the carriage in a while. The overhead sun is too hot.”

The older toddler Ji and the younger toddler Ling gulped down their water and nodded obediently. “We know, Mother.”

Su Ying also handed the water bag to Lin Sheng. “Lin Sheng, you accompany your younger brother and sister to the carriage as well.”

Lin Sheng smiled and nodded. “Yes, Mistress.”

When Su Ying saw that the sun was getting hotter, she carried the little ones into the carriage. As w.a.n.g Lang and his family were in the big carriage, Aunt Zhao and the others had to follow on foot.

“Bai Shuang, Aunt Zhao, both of you can sit in the carriage for a while to cool down.”

Bai Shuang took a water bag and fed Aunt Zhao a mouthful of water. “Mistress, just let Aunt Zhao get in the carriage. I can still walk.”

Su Ying didn’t bother wasting her breath anymore and simply pulled them into the carriage. “Why leave the carriage empty? Go up and rest.”

The two of them didn’t say anything else when Su Ying insisted.

Su Ying used the small leather whip to hit the b.u.t.ts of the oxen and goats intermittently. “Uncle Hea, do you think the weather in the northern wilderness is also like this?”

Hea Shouyi took a sip of water. Strangely, the bamboo hat that Su Ying had given him was surprisingly cool, so he did not feel uncomfortable even when he was walking outside.

“I’m not too sure about the situation in the northern wilderness, but I’ve heard previously that the differences between the four seasons are very clear. Perhaps it might not be as bad as the weather now.”

Perhaps it was because the weather was too hot, but when the team reached a cl.u.s.ter of boulders, Li Da ordered the group to stop and rest in the shadow behind the boulders.

Su Ying herded the oxen and goats to a shady place. The weather was so hot that even the animals almost couldn’t stand it.

Hea Shouyi undid the water bag and poured the water into the basin to feed the animals.

“Mistress, let’s have a simple lunch. I’ll make some cold noodles. It’s too hot and everyone doesn’t have much of an appet.i.te.”

“Alright.”

After Jiang Yang had parked the carriage properly, he went around to gather some dry wood to start a fire.

After the firewood was gathered, Hea Shouyi set up a pot and boiled some water to cook the noodles.

Perhaps it was because the weather was too hot, but even after walking for half a day, everyone did not feel very hungry.

After the cold noodles were done, Bai Shuang served them to everyone.

“What’s the meaning of this? You’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you? Before we came, all of you had meat and eggs all day long. Now that we’re here, you’re going to cook us noodles in plain water?”

Before Su Ying could swallow the soup in her mouth, she saw Madam Sun walking over ferociously with a bowl in her hand. She pointed at Su Ying and said angrily, “Don’t think that I don’t know what you’re thinking. Let me tell you. If it wasn’t for you, my Lang’er wouldn’t have ended up like this. This is all your fault. It’s fine if you don’t serve us good vegetables and meat, but you want to use a bowl of noodles in plain water to get rid of us. I’m telling you now. Don’t even think about it!”

The reason Madam Sun dared to speak to Su Ying in such a manner was that she was certain that Su Ying wouldn’t refute her. Hence, she became more and more overbearing as she spoke.

Madam Sun put the bowl on the ground and said arrogantly, “Get them to cook meat for us now.”

Su Ying finished the soup in the bowl and glanced at the noodles on the floor. She picked them up, poured them into her own bowl, and began eating.

Aunt Zhao was afraid that Madam Sun would hit Su Ying again, so she ran over and smiled. “Madam Sun, don’t be angry. Everyone is eating cold noodles. It’s good for the body to eat this to cool down the summer heat.”

“Bah! Don’t try to fool me. Do you think that I don’t know? I want to eat meat and eggs. If you don’t have any, slaughter the chicken.”

Aunt Zhao didn’t expect Madam Sun to be so unreasonable. Did she know what kind of place they were in? Yet she was still so picky about food.

Su Ying finished the noodles in her bowl and placed the bowl beside the pot. She walked over to Aunt Zhao and said, “Aunt Zhao, go ahead and eat. Don’t mind her.”

Aunt Zhao glanced at Su Ying worriedly. “Mistress, you mustn’t…”

Su Ying murmured a reply. “Just go. It’s fine.”

“Alright.”

Aunt Zhao left, turning back to look at Su Ying every few steps.

Madam Sun thought that Su Ying was coming back to beg her, and she became even bolder. “I want to have that chicken slaughtered to make chicken soup for my son. You go and do it now.”

Su Ying raised her eyes slowly and her gaze landed on Madam Sun’s arrogant face indifferently. “Madam Sun, to be honest, the last person who tested my patience has already had his bones broken. You don’t want to be the next one, do you?”

Su Ying’s words were very calm, but the murderous intent that flashed through her eyes was hard to ignore.

Madam Sun’s face tensed up, but when she thought about how she had the moral upper hand, she became emboldened. “You… you’ve caused my whole family to end up in this sorry state. Do you still think you are not in the wrong?”

Su Ying raised her eyebrows icily. “I’m in the wrong, but I don’t care. I don’t have any opinion on whether you hate me or not. Saving your son and taking you in are within the limits of what I can accept. I won’t say mean things to you if you speak nicely to me. But if you want to use this to threaten me, then you’ve made a mistake. Behave decently and I’ll let you live. If you don’t know what’s good for you, then get lost.”

Under Su Ying’s chilly stare, Madam Sun was so shocked that she couldn’t speak. She was terrified!

At that moment, she had no doubt that Su Ying would really take her life.

w.a.n.g Furong ran to Madam Sun’s side and tugged at her sleeve as she said in a low voice, “Grandma, you… you should stop talking. Father has woken up. You should quickly go and take a look.”

Now that Madam Sun was given an opportunity to escape her predicament, she quickly pulled w.a.n.g Furong along and ran back to the carriage without looking back.

Su Ying also followed them to the carriage.

When Tian Mu saw Su Ying, he wanted to help Li Wanniang out of the carriage to make room for her.

“She’s weak. Don’t move her.” After she finished speaking, Su Ying turned to look at Madam Sun and the others.

Madam Sun’s heart shuddered momentarily.

“Get down.”

Before Madam Sun could say anything, she was pulled out of the carriage by w.a.n.g Furong.

When Su Ying got into the carriage, w.a.n.g Lang had already opened his eyes. He was a little surprised to see Su Ying. “Princess… Princess Consort?”

“You’re awake. Since you can still recognize me, it seems like you’ve regained your consciousness.” Su Ying checked his pulse. Although it was weak, it was stable and his wound was also slowly recovering.

“What… what exactly is going on?”

“I want to ask you too. How did you get injured? From the condition of the wound, it should have been caused by a sharp object.”

w.a.n.g Lang’s eyes turned dark as he said, “Someone wanted to kill me. I was injured when I resisted. Princess Consort, where’s His Highness? Have you seen him?”

“He’s doing very well. Take care of yourself first.” After making sure that w.a.n.g Lang was fine, Su Ying got off the carriage.

Xiao Jin was already waiting outside the carriage. When he saw Su Ying come out, he asked, “How is he?”

“He won’t die.”

Xiao Jin nodded and got Jiang Yang to help him into the carriage.
