Incurable Pain | Chapter 83.2

Usually, office workers only have one day off for New Year’s Day, but students often have three or four days off.

So on the second day after New Year’s Day, Bai Xunyin was summoned back to the research inst.i.tute by the director. There wasn’t much to do in the inst.i.tute, as it was the busiest time before and after the New Year.

The director just wanted her to prepare and bring along some interns to do some basic experimental teaching.

“Interns?”

Bai Xunyin was a little surprised after hearing this, and asked her female colleague from the same department, Luo Yan, “It’s almost Chinese New Year… Will there still be interns coming to the inst.i.tute?”

“What interns? Our research inst.i.tute doesn’t just take in anyone. These are all arranged in advance by leaders from prestigious universities, sending some master’s and doctoral students over for interns.h.i.+p experience—hm, after all, the experience in our inst.i.tute is quite valuable.”

Luo Yan had been in the research inst.i.tute for several years, no longer a newcomer like Bai Xunyin, familiar with all the ins and outs inside. Upon hearing this, she couldn’t help but smile and look sympathetically at Bai Xunyin.

“This task comes every year. This year, that old guy, the director, has thrown it on you. Hmm, really… But those interns will only be here for a little over a month during this quiet time. You don’t need to worry too much. Just keep an eye on them to finish their papers.”

Bai Xunyin listened attentively, finding it quite intriguing.

So, everywhere there are these inexplicable ‘connections,’ and the research inst.i.tute is no exception.

Bai Xunyin didn’t complain much about the task a.s.signed to her by the director as a newcomer, as she had nothing else to do anyway.

However, when she saw one of those interns with a familiar face after the three-day New Year holiday, Bai Xunyin couldn’t help but feel the urge to push this task away.

Especially Sheng Jianian, with his smiling eyes, who took the opportunity when there were fewer people around to smile at her.

“Senior sister, we meet again so soon.”

It was hard for Bai Xunyin not to suspect that he deliberately came to the research inst.i.tute for an interns.h.i.+p.

Thinking of this, her expression couldn’t help but become somewhat serious.

“What do you want?”

“Senior sister, you’re so scary.”

Sheng Jianian looked at Bai Xunyin’s deliberately cold but still beautiful face. Feeling a strange but uncontrollable excitement, he couldn’t help but pretend to be ‘weak.’

“I just came here for a normal interns.h.i.+p—why haven’t you added me on WeChat?”

He waited all night for that.

d.a.m.n, he felt so wronged.

It had to be said, except for Yu Luoyin, all the men, whether handsome or charming, were immune to Bai Xunyin. She had enough with one seductive man.

So she just glanced at Sheng Jianian indifferently and said matter-of-factly, “Since you’re here for an interns.h.i.+p, I’ll be your supervisor for the next two months. Don’t call me senior sister or anything like that.”

Sheng Jianian’s eyes showed a hint of undisguised disappointment, muttering an unhappy “Okay.”

He seemed very unwilling.

But because of his appearance, Bai Xunyin couldn’t help but feel a bit agitated. Faced with these interns who were purely here for experience, she also became stricter.

She almost judged their papers with intermediate standards, making sure they didn’t try to pa.s.s off any subpar work as academic.

As a result, rumors began to spread in the research inst.i.tute that ‘Bai Xunyin is a G.o.ddess of calamity,’ a half-joking gossip started by these interns who felt they were being persecuted.

At lunchtime in the cafeteria, Luo Yan was quite indignant and mentioned this to Bai Xunyin—

“Those interns really don’t know what’s good for them. They act like writing a decent paper is akin to asking for their lives. I don’t know how they managed to become doctors one by one.”

Luo Yan bit into her ribs with a crunch, speaking fiercely. “Bai Bai, I think you’re wasting your time dealing with them. Out of the seven or eight interns, only one is somewhat serious. What’s his name again… Right, Sheng Jianian, Xiao Sheng is still okay.”

Hearing this, Bai Xunyin paused with her chopsticks, her brows faintly furrowed as she responded with a noncommittal “Hmm.”

In fact, she didn’t care at all about the evaluations of these arrogant students, but Sheng Jianian really gave her a headache.

Because of his interns.h.i.+p at the research inst.i.tute, she had to ‘interact’ with him every day, which was fine, but this young man not only didn’t understand that she had a boyfriend and should be avoided, but he also went ‘overboard.’

Sheng Jianian no longer called her senior sister, but like Yu s.h.i.+teng, he now called her ‘teacher.’

“Teacher.”

Enough was enough.

Before they had even finished their meal, Sheng Jianian came over when he saw Bai Xunyin in the cafeteria.

Luo Yan cleared her throat lightly, picked up her tray, and left, saying to Bai Xunyin, “Bai Bai, I’ll head back first.”

Bai Xunyin nodded helplessly and frowned at Sheng Jianian.

“I already told you, don’t call me that.”

Sheng Jianian blinked innocently.

“Then how should I address you?”

Bai Xunyin said mercilessly, “Just call me by my name.”

“That won’t do, it’s impolite. After all, you’re always my senior sister, or my… teacher.”

When it came to the word ‘teacher,’ Sheng Jianian deliberately lowered his voice, adding a hint of ambiguity, as if flirting.

“How about I call you teacher?”

Bai Xunyin felt that Sheng Jianian must thank her for her patience; otherwise, she would not be able to stop herself from scolding him.

Taking a deep breath, she furrowed her delicate brows, stood up, and turned away.

For such a ‘clingy ghost’ like Sheng Jianian, it seemed that only a cold treatment would work.

You couldn’t directly refuse anything—because he hadn’t confessed to you at all. He was just like a little ghost, hovering around you openly and using writing papers as an excuse, thinking he could barge in and take over.

But Bai Xunyin felt it was time to wake him up.

When she got back, she picked up her phone from the table and sent a WeChat message to Yu Luoyin, asking if he had time to pick her up after work.

Bai Xunyin rarely took such initiative, probably because she happened to catch Yu Luoyin in a leisurely time as he replied almost instantly.

Even from the text, you could sense a hint of teasing.

[What’s up? Miss me?]

This guy was narcissistic in his daily life, but there was nothing wrong with indulging him a little.

Bai Xunyin replied expressionlessly.

[Hmm.]

Yu Luoyin replied. [I’m sure you do.]

With him saying that, it probably meant he didn’t have surgery and didn’t need to work overtime. Bai Xunyin felt relieved and put her phone away.

When it was time to get off work, sure enough, Bai Xunyin saw Sheng Jianian secretly observing her progress in packing up and waiting to leave with her.

He had been doing this for several days in a row.

But today, instead of pulling Luo Yan along to take the subway to avoid him, Bai Xunyin walked out of the research building’s gate alone, openly and confidently.

Yu Luoyin’s white Bentley parked outside the gate was particularly conspicuous.
