"Is Yinyin smart?" Gu Jiao asked.
‘Of course.’ Duke An replied, continuing to write while displaying an incredibly proud expression on his face: ‘Yinyin is the smartest child in the world.’
Gu Jiao had just finished reading the words aloud when——
"Nonsense!" Second Master Jing’s head suddenly popped up outside the window. This was a man who had abandoned his book-carrying duties halfway through and sneaked back. "Yinyin was two years old and still couldn’t talk! She was so slow!"
Duke An trembled with rage, writing in bold strokes: ‘She could say ‘Mother’ at one year, seven months, and thirteen days!’
Gu Jiao: "..."
Love truly blinded people to flaws, and in a parent’s eyes, every child was a prodigy.
Duke An continued writing: ‘Don’t listen to him. Yinyin was very intelligent. She was just a late bloomer. Once she blossomed, she could recite countless poems. None of her peers could match her.’
So... this was a compet.i.tion?
This didn’t seem like something Gu Jiao would have done.
She despised reciting poems. Even if she remembered them, she wouldn’t recite them aloud.
Gu Jiao mentally pictured herself, with the intellect of an adult, shaking her head and reciting in a babyish voice, competing with a line of little kids in a poetry recitation contest. The image was so ridiculous it made her shudder!
No, that definitely wasn’t her.
"Is Yinyin... very close to her parents?" Gu Jiao asked unconsciously, dropping Jing Yinyin’s surname.
‘She’s very close to us.’ Duke An answered, his gaze soft and filled with affection as he spoke of his daughter: ‘She’s so attached to her mother and me that she follows us wherever we go. If we try to make her sleep on her own, she refuses. She’ll always sneak into our bed in the middle of the night, clutching her little pillow.’
Gu Jiao’s mind conjured up an image of herself as a little girl, adorably saying, “My bed told me it doesn’t want me to sleep on it tonight,” before happily trotting over to Duke An and his wife’s room and plopping her round little self onto their bed.
Such childish behavior—there was no way that could have been her!
Clearing her throat, Gu Jiao said, “She… doesn’t talk much, does she? And she rarely calls for her parents.”
Duke An wrote on the armrest: ‘Not at all. Yinyin loves to talk, and she’s always calling out for her father and mother.’
“Mother, food!”
“Father, carry me!”
“Yinyin doesn’t want to sleep yet. Yinyin needs a kiss before sleeping.”
“Yinyin is so adorable—who could ever bear to refuse such a little cutie?”
Her voice was soft and sweet, her head tilted to one side, and she radiated pure cuteness!
Gu Jiao felt gooseb.u.mps rising all over her skin. Why was the image in her mind so vivid?
Did her imagination really have to be this high-definition?
Duke An continued writing on the armrest: ‘Yinyin’s mother and I have always believed that having Yinyin is the greatest blessing Heaven has bestowed upon us.’
Gu Jiao stared at the words etched on the armrest, falling into silence.
To grow up cherished by Duke An and Xuanyuan Zi must have been a truly happy experience.
“Surnamed Gu! Take your daughter away! I never want to see her again!”
“Mom…”
“I don’t want you anymore! Stop calling me Mom!”
“Mom, Mom… I’ll be good… I won’t cry anymore… I won’t eat anymore… Please open the door… Mom… Mom, I’m so cold… It’s so dark here… I’m scared… Mom…”
This was the reality of her childhood.
It was a night that would never bring salvation.
……
When Xiao Heng and Second Master Jing returned to the Qilin Hall after returning all the books, the conversation between Duke An and Gu Jiao was almost finished.
Second Madame had been unwell recently, so Second Master Jing needed to return home early. He bid farewell to Xiao Heng and Gu Jiao, urging his elder brother to leave with him.
In the hallway, Xiao Heng watched the two brothers' departing figures and remarked thoughtfully, "Even though they are not from the same mother, their relations.h.i.+p as brothers is quite harmonious."
Second Master Jing was straightforward and simple-minded, and his wife was gentle and virtuous. Having such a younger brother and sister-in-law was undoubtedly a blessing for Duke An.
Of course, having an elder brother as magnanimous as Duke An was equally a fortune for the young couple.
A family united in harmony was truly more valuable than any wealth or glory.
Noticing that Gu Jiao remained silent, Xiao Heng stepped into the room. There, he saw Gu Jiao sitting in her wheelchair, quietly gazing at the scenery in the courtyard, lost in thought.
Xiao Heng picked an orange from the fruit platter on the table and sat down on a stool beside her.
"What are you thinking about?" He asked while peeling the orange.
"I'm thinking about who I really am." Gu Jiao replied.
Xiao Heng already knew that Gu Jiao was not the same person as the Gu Jiao from before. She came from a very distant place, but she had never expressed such doubts before.
"Why are you suddenly asking this? Did the Imperial Advisor say something to you?" He asked.
It was only after she returned from meeting the Imperial Advisor that something seemed off about her. Later, she had requested a private conversation with Duke An.
Combining her question with these events, Xiao Heng speculated that the Imperial Advisor might have said something to her, perhaps related to her origins.
Gu Jiao remained silent.
Xiao Heng didn’t press her further. He smiled and handed her the peeled orange. "Actually, who you were before doesn’t matter. What matters is that you are who you are."
Gu Jiao looked at him in slight surprise. "I am ... who I am?"
"Yes." Xiao Heng replied, gazing at her seriously, his eyes filled with all the weight and trust he had for her. "Names, status, appearance, and the body... they are all illusions."
As he spoke, his slender, jade-like fingers gently tapped her forehead. "What’s here is the one and only truth."
Gu Jiao stared at him with a peculiar expression. "Your words are sounding more and more like those of an enlightened monk. If I think about it carefully, there’s even a hint of Zen in them."
Xiao Heng let out a sigh, "Alas, there’s no helping it. With a little monk in the family, I’ve been influenced. This is what they call ‘being dyed red by the company of vermilion.’"
Gu Jiao was amused by his quip and took a piece of the orange he handed her to eat.
"Is it good?" Xiao Heng asked.
Gu Jiao nodded. "It’s delicious."
Xiao Heng understood that she still had something on her mind.
She wasn’t the type of person to dwell on trivial matters, so if it had taken her time to carefully choose her words, it was certainly not something small.
He showed no impatience, didn’t rush her, and didn’t walk away. He simply stayed there, silently keeping her company.
Just as she had once accompanied him on his journey back to the light.
The trust and understanding between them had long been so deep that words were unnecessary.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the s.h.i.+ family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succ.u.mb to darkness amidst hards.h.i.+p and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When s.h.i.+ Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the s.h.i.+ family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like s.h.i.+ Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
s.h.i.+ Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
