In the imperial audience hall, the court officials were divided in their opinions regarding the appointment of Xiao Liulang as the new commander of the Black Wind Cavalry.
"Your Majesty, I believe this decision is inappropriate." Announced the Capital Magistrate as he stepped forward, holding his ceremonial tablet in hands.
Minister of Justice, Dong Wei, asked, "Lord Su, what exactly is inappropriate about it?"
The Capital Magistrate, surnamed Su, was the head of the Su Family and Mu Qingchen’s direct grandfather.
With a cold tone, he replied, "How can the Great Yan’s imperial court appoint a person from the State of Zhao as a commander?"
Dong Wei countered, "He has been adopted by Duke An as his foster son and is now a citizen of the State of Yan."
"Even so, it’s still inappropriate!" Old Master Su declared firmly, leaving no room for negotiation.
Dong Wei cupped his hands toward the Emperor seated on the dragon throne and then addressed Old Master Su with a serious expression. "The selection of the Black Wind Cavalry’s commander was proposed by His Majesty and approved by the heads of the n.o.ble families. The rules were clear to all the family heads and civil and military officials. There were no objections earlier, nor later, yet now that the selection is complete, there are objections. Could it be, Lord Su, that you cannot accept defeat?"
Old Master Su snorted coldly, "How can a foster son be considered legitimate? He’s not even Duke An’s biological son!"
Dong Wei chuckled, "And yet, if I recall correctly, didn’t the Su Family also send a foster son to partic.i.p.ate in the selection?"
The Su Family had two slots for the selection——one was given to Mu Qingchen, and the other was filled by an expert they had hired.
The expert wasn’t aiming for first place but was there to exhaust the compet.i.tion on Mu Qingchen’s behalf.
It was a common tactic in the selection process, one everyone understood but didn’t openly acknowledge.
Old Master Su was left speechless.
The Emperor, growing impatient, finally spoke, "Enough! Stop arguing, all of you!"
Their bickering was giving him a headache.
It wasn’t just these old n.o.bles feeling frustrated, the Emperor was just as exasperated, if not more!
From the very beginning, he had no intention of letting anyone pa.s.s the selection. He had even prepared to reclaim the Black Wind Cavalry.
Who could have predicted that someone would actually succeed in breaking through?
How did this Xiao Liulang manage to overcome all the challenges?
And how on earth did he decipher the hidden mission within the secret letter?
Even Fifth Master Han and Feng Wuming from the Feng Family couldn’t stop a mere brat from the State of Zhao?
He would rather the Feng Family seize military power than let it fall into the hands of the Duke An Estate!
However, as the ruler of a nation, his words carried the weight of gold, and he could not issue decrees that changed with the wind.
He might be mad, he might be a tyrant, but every one of his actions was always justifiable.
While he was known for using the harshest punishments for the lightest offenses, it didn’t mean he would punish someone indiscriminately for no reason.
Those actions were always kept behind the scenes and never brought into the public eye.
“Han Lei.” The Emperor spoke irritably.
“Humble official is here.” Han Lei stepped forward, holding his ceremonial tablet.
The Emperor’s heart bled as he struggled to contain his fiery anger. Reluctantly and unwillingly, he ordered, "Deliver the Black Wind Cavalry’s command banner, command seal, and token… to Xiao Liulang of Duke An Estate!"
Han Lei responded with deep regret, “...As Your Majesty commands!”
Following the Mu Family’s loss of command over two hundred thousand troops, the Han Family now also lost control of fifty thousand Black Wind Cavalry horses.
......
Gu Jiao got out of bed.
There were no female disciples in the Imperial Advisor’s Hall, so for the past few days, her clothes had been changed by a palace maid sent by Shangguan Yan.
Today, however, the young palace maid was absent, giving Xiao Heng a rare chance to care for his wife himself.
Gu Jiao sat on the bed as Xiao Heng stood behind her, tying her hairband.
Dressed as a young man, her hairstyle was simple, requiring just a light binding with the hairband.
But those hands——
Gu Jiao looked at her two heavily bandaged "bear paws" with a look of utter despair. "Isn't this a bit over the top?"
Xiao Heng calmly replied, “The Imperial Advisor wrapped them himself. He said it’s not excessive.”
Gu Jiao pouted.
What Xiao Heng didn’t mention was that her hands had been severely injured from gripping the reins for too long. Her palms had been rubbed raw, leaving the flesh mangled and b.l.o.o.d.y. After the blood dried, her hands had stuck to the reins, making it impossible for the physicians to treat her. They ended up cutting the reins directly and sending both her and the horse to the Imperial Advisor's Hall for the Imperial Advisor to handle personally.
The reason she was sent to the Imperial Advisor's Hall was that the Imperial Advisor had previously stated his willingness to treat any injured cavalry partic.i.p.ants during the selection.
If someone got injured, sending them to the Imperial Advisor's Hall was the obvious choice.
Gu Jiao had fainted at the time and remembered none of it.
It was fortunate that she had lost consciousness; otherwise, the pain would have been unbearable.
Little Jing Kong had already been placed on the bed, sprawled out in a starfish position, continuing his peaceful sleep. The side of his cheek still bore the imprint left by the woven mat.
Gu Jiao glanced at him, then at the Black Wind King and the horse king in the courtyard, and finally at Xiao Heng, who was by her side, treating her with such gentle care.
The room was quiet, though the cicadas outside were deafeningly loud.
Yet, for some reason, her heart felt an inexplicable joy and a profound sense of peace.
With her heavily bandaged "bear paws", she lifted the thin blanket off herself and got out of bed.
But after just one step, her legs gave out, and she collapsed forward with a loud thud!
Xiao Heng quickly reached out to catch her, but she fell too fast, and the momentum was too strong.
Unable to stop her in time, he lunged forward, wrapping his arms around her and turning to cus.h.i.+on her fall as they both tumbled to the ground together.
He landed heavily on the cold, hard floor.
“Are you okay?”
He held her tightly and asked with concern.
Gu Jiao lay sprawled on top of him and shook her head, "I’m fine. What about you? Did it hurt when you fell? Am I too heavy?"
Xiao Heng remained in his protective posture, one arm wrapped around her waist and the other s.h.i.+elding her head.
He smiled softly and said, "I’m not hurt, and no, you’re not heavy."
Gu Jiao asked curiously, "Why are my legs so weak?"
She hadn’t expected it at all.
Xiao Heng replied in a gentle tone, "You overexerted yourself. You’ve been riding nonstop for an entire day and night without rest. It’s no wonder your legs feel weak."
Resigned, Gu Jiao rested her small head against Xiao Heng’s firm chest and let out a long sigh. "My legs don’t even feel like they’re mine anymore, and I can’t move my toes. Husband, you’re really amazing."
Xiao Heng, who hadn’t meant anything suggestive but somehow ended up being misunderstood: "…"
And Yu He, who had just arrived at the door with a bowl of medicinal soup: "…"

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the s.h.i.+ family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succ.u.mb to darkness amidst hards.h.i.+p and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When s.h.i.+ Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the s.h.i.+ family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like s.h.i.+ Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
s.h.i.+ Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
