Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Gu Jiao's drunkenness lasted for two full hours, and by the time she awoke, it was already dark outside.
In the Qilin Hall, the lights were brightly lit.
Xiao Heng had spent the entire day engrossed in books at the library pavilion, completely absorbed and forgetting to eat or sleep. Only now did he feel the pangs of hunger.
His appet.i.te wasn’t great, so the kitchen prepared a delicious egg drop soup for him, along with a selection of signature snacks from the Imperial Advisor's Hall and a plate of fresh, appetizing fruits.
Xiao Heng sat down, ready to eat.
Meanwhile, Little Jing Kong was bathing in the room.
Since he had been overly energetic these past two days and had been deemed free of any post-trauma effects, his privilege of being pampered during baths was revoked. He now had to bathe himself.
Although Xiao Heng would always give him a proper wash afterward, the effort and technique were evidently different.
It was impossible to expect Little Jing Kong to bathe quietly. He had once been the best at chanting scriptures in the temple, and although he no longer recited them, he had developed an even more captivating interest of his own.
He tied strange strips of cloth around his body, struck peculiar poses, and began to sing.
“Hawthorn~ ah~ Pear~ ah~ Hawthorn~ oh~ Pear~”
"All must be washed~ all must be washed~"
"If not washed~ They’ll all turn to mush~”
Xiao Heng, who had just picked up a hawthorn fruit: “…”
Xiao Heng decisively put the hawthorn down and avoided touching the other fruits as well.
His gaze s.h.i.+fted to the plate of snacks. The snacks had been deep-fried, and though he didn’t know the exact ingredients, they looked crisp and golden, served with dipping sauce.
He picked up a piece with chopsticks, gently took a bite, and—crunch!
The sound alone was enough to whet anyone’s appet.i.te.
Xiao Heng: Hmm, what are these made of, they’re so crispy?
Meanwhile, Little Jing Kong finished his song about hawthorn and pear and began to pa.s.sionately sing the next song.
"Dreams are so precious, chicken dung is so crispy~"
Xiao Heng: “…”
In an instant, Little Jing Kong switched to an operatic style.
“In the latrine, hotpot and barbecue, one person drunk~ and when they wake up~ lick a handful~"
“Oh whoa~ heartless~”
Xiao Heng, who had just licked a bit of the sauce: "…"
Moments later, the Qilin Hall echoed with the sound of Little Jing Kong throwing a tantrum.
“Ahhh!”
His bad brother-in-law was coming after him! He was holding a feather duster! Run!
— Another chaotic night of chickens flying and dogs jumping ensued.
The solemn and dignified Imperial Advisor's Hall now had a touch of earthly hustle and bustle due to the noise from the pair of big and small individuals.
……
Three days later, on the first day of the seventh month, the first official selection match took place.
The location was still at the Han Family's Black Wind Camp. In the preliminary round, a total of forty-four cavalrymen advanced. The preliminary round was a six-to-one selection, while the compet.i.tion this time was a two-to-one elimination.
This type of selection a.s.sessment within the military camp was closed to outsiders. Only the camp’s soldiers or those directly involved in the selection were allowed to attend.
Xiao Heng rode in a carriage and escorted Gu Jiao to the camp entrance. He watched as Gu Jiao rode the Black Wind King into the camp before signaling for the carriage to leave.
However, he didn’t go far, instead finding a shaded spot under a tree to wait discreetly.
Not far away, another carriage was parked. Inside sat Duke An and Second Master Jing.
"It's so hot today. I told you not to come, elder brother, but you insisted." Second Master Jing muttered.
Duke An said nothing.
…Mainly because even if he wanted to, he couldn’t speak.
He quietly waited there, waiting for Gu Jiao to come out, regardless of whether she succeeded or failed.
Gu Jiao didn’t arrive particularly early. The others had already gathered, and a soldier came to find her to take her number plate and hang it on the bulletin board.
"Can I take a look?" Gu Jiao asked a pa.s.sing soldier.
The soldier replied, "Sure."
Gu Jiao walked over.
The number plates were nearly all hung up, which meant everyone had arrived.
The first number plate was Gu Changqing's, though he was using the name of Han Family's collateral descendant, Han Zeyu.
The next one was for Old Master Yang's younger brother, Yang Wu, marked with the First Heavenly Stem Jia.
Old Master Yang was a renowned expert, but it remained to be seen how capable his younger brother was.
Taoist Qingfeng's number was Third Heavenly Stem Bing, and his opponent was the legitimate son of the Dong Family.
Gu Jiao then glanced at her own number and Mu Qingchen's.
Their luck was truly something to marvel at.
Her opponent turned out to be yet another member of the Han Family. What kind of tangled fate was this?
As for Mu Qingchen, he would have to face someone from the w.a.n.g Family. Fighting one’s own people so early on really drained their strength.
There were about seven or eight number plates yet to be posted.
Gu Jiao didn’t see Fifth Master Han’s name, so he likely hadn’t arrived yet.
“He’s Seventh Heavenly Stem Geng.” Gu Changqing said as he walked over.
There was a bit of distance between the two of them, and at a glance, it seemed like they had no interaction.
“Tenth Earthy Branch You…” Gu Jiao’s gaze fell on the position of Tenth Earthy Branch You, where a number plate had already been hung. “Su Chen?”
Gu Changqing pretended to examine the number plates as he replied in a low voice, “Su Yuan’s younger brother, Mu Qingchen’s uncle.”
“Is he strong?” Gu Jiao asked.
“He’s said to be a skilled expert. Fifth Master Han originally planned to swap with someone." Gu Changqing replied.
Gu Jiao hummed thoughtfully, "Afraid he couldn't beat Su Chen?"
Gu Changqing said, “No, he wanted to defeat you and eliminate you from the compet.i.tion.”
Strictly speaking, these selections didn't allow for random number plate changes, but since this was the Han Family’s territory, and Gu Jiao also happened to draw a Han Family member, it wouldn’t be surprising if they bent the rules a bit.
Anyway, Gu Jiao had the same intention. She wanted to eliminate Fifth Master Han from the compet.i.tion. She asked regretfully, "Then why didn’t he change?"
Just then, someone approached, and Gu Changqing waited until the person pa.s.sed before responding, “Because he realized your opponent is Han Shaoyu. He’s a collateral descendant of the Han Family, just from a lesser branch not raised in the main household. He fought his way up from underground martial arenas and is ranked among the top twenty experts."
So that was it.
Fifth Master Han planned to deal with Su Chen himself and let Han Shaoyu eliminate Gu Jiao.
“Sounds good.” Gu Jiao said.
“Indeed.” Gu Changqing agreed.
The two exchanged a knowing glance.
"Your new armor looks good." Gu Changqing remarked.
“Mm.” Gu Jiao nodded.
……
On the battlefield, the sound of a gong rang out. Gu Changqing, sword in hand, charged on horseback toward his opponent, Yang Wu.
No one expected such formidable experts in the first round. Gu Changqing’s swordsmans.h.i.+p was extraordinary, while Yang Wu’s blade technique was equally impressive.
The clash of swords and blades, the aura of killing intent filled the air, and within moments, dozens of moves had pa.s.sed.
Yang Wu’s skills were slightly inferior to those of his elder brother, Old Master Yang, but he still held an advantage over most younger compet.i.tors. His internal force was immense, and his blade technique was precise. The only thing he lacked compared to Gu Changqing was his mount.
Even so, Yang Wu compensated for this shortcoming with his overwhelming internal force.
Yang Wu arrogantly said, "Lad, you're no match for me. Admit defeat! Otherwise, in the chaos of blades and swords, I fear you won't leave here in one piece!"
Today’s compet.i.tion had a life-or-death agreement, meaning killing was allowed.
The Yang Family had long coveted the Han Family’s military power and always aimed to strike deadly blows against the Han Family's descendants.
Yang Wu swung his blade down fiercely, and Gu Changqing raised his sword to block.
Such powerful internal force!

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the s.h.i.+ family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succ.u.mb to darkness amidst hards.h.i.+p and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When s.h.i.+ Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the s.h.i.+ family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like s.h.i.+ Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
s.h.i.+ Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
