Chapter 143: Chapter 142: Tried and True Chinese
As the chat kept asking to see pretty girls, Lin Xue checked out the experience store as she turned on her computer.
A majority of them were playing Warcraft, a small number were playing Plants vs Zombies or other mobile games. The two computers furthest into the experience store seemed to be occupied by two other a.s.sistants, one was dealing with numbers, the other with the story.
“Haven’t seen Chen Mo, he’s probably on the second floor.”
Lin Xue didn’t find Chen Mo after looking around the experience store.
Many people now know what Chen Mo looked like since he showed his face during his commentary.
Lin Xue didn’t feel that it was a good idea to go search for Chen Mo as she didn’t want to interrupt him if he was working.
There weren’t many games on the computers as they were all games from Thunderbolt Entertainment. Lin Xue noticed that there was a game without an icon called Wulin Legend.
“It actually is Wuxia themed! Chen Mo never disappoints in the wow-factor department,” Lin Xue was shocked.
As a streamer pa.s.sionate for standalone games, Lin Xue had some know-how in the videogame industry. She knew that all Chinese themed games were almost unanimous with Xianxia games. There weren’t many games that had Wuxia themes.
But many players looked forward to Wuxia games as it gave away a completely different vibe to Xianxia games.
Moreover, there were many Xianxia MMORPG games. Players looking deeper into it will realise that they have the same core gameplay as western RPGs with modified looks and story, with no changes to the gameplay.
There were some good standalone Xianxia games, but there weren’t many of them and the players were getting sick of them.
Lin Xue felt that it was brave for Chen Mo to make a Wuxia themed game.
“Alright, I’ll download the streaming software now. The internet should be good here, I’ll swap over to streaming from the computer and we’ll be able to experience Chen Mo’s new Wuxia game together.” said Lin Xue.
Lin Xue looked at the chat as she waited for the streaming software to download.
“Show us the cute girl at the desk!”
“Grab her number!”
“Xue, get Chen Mo to teach you how to play Warcraft!”
“I don’t wanna watch Wuxia games. The existing Wuxia games are complete garbage, it’s probably the same too!”
“Yeah, since we are at the experience store now, could you show us more of it? We aren’t in a hurry to play games.”
“Alright, shut up, let her decide what she’s going to stream.”
“I like Wuxia games! I wanna watch!”
“We must take a look at Chen Mo’s new game!”
There were many different comments in chat.
As the internet was pretty fast, the streaming software was done downloading. After doing some testing, Lin Xue started streaming from the computer.
She then double clicked the icon to enter the game.
It started off with a cinematic.
The background looked like traditional paper made of rice, with ink slowly dripping on the paper and spreading out. The Thunderbolt Entertainment LOGO in the form of a seal appears on it.
There were many different things flas.h.i.+ng on the screen. With each stroke of the brush, a character would show up in ink. The characters had simple animations, zooming, panning or fading, appearing on the screen one after another.
There were handsome swordsmen, violent meon, serious monks, mysterious martial artists. Cla.s.sic character designs flashed by one by one and Lin Xue could barely keep up.
As the cinematics continued, the camera started to pull away to reveal a word.
It was followed by a cut, a few martial artists were fighting over secret scrolls and above them were a few evil looking characters controlling the situation.
A young handsome swordsman flew across the screen, hacking down the thieves.
In the vast mountains, an old man stood with his back to the camera, a group of masters and disciples stood respectfully behind him.
Among the plum blossoms, there was a lady playing her Guqin, standing beside her was a martial artist playing their flute.
In the vast deserts, a large eagle flew by with a warrior sitting on it, overlooking the world.
Among the chaos, a few Hero looking characters showed up.
In the end, an evil looking person opened her eyes, and two words showed up in ink in the middle of the screen.
Wulin Legend.
Lin Xue was shocked after viewing the cinematics.
It’s not comparable to the cinematics from Warcraft as the budget was completely different.
This CG wil ink drawn characters wouldn’t even be on the same magnitude in terms of Warcraft.
However, Lin was shocked how good the cinematics felt, perfectly reflecting the atmosphere of a Wuxia game.
She could tell that the characters were cla.s.sic Wuxia themed, and the scenes were also cla.s.sic scenes that would appear in Wuxia themes. And combined with the ink artstyle, the players could feel how traditional and how integrated the whole thing was.
People overseas might not be able to tell, but someone with strong Wuxia knowledge could tell how traditional this was.
The game started after the cinematics ended.
The background was a drawing in ink of a mountain. Thunderbolt Gaming’s logo was at the bottom left, and the t.i.tle Wulin Legend was on the top.
There were four different options in the bottom right, Enter Wulin, Re Enter the Field, Retreat into Mountains, and Forget the Past.
Lin Xue clicked on Enter Wulin and started the game.
She was surprised to not enter into the game right away, but to a character customisation screen.
They could set their name, change their looks as well as other basic attributes.
System hint: Press s.p.a.cebar for random attributes.
Lin Xue was shocked to see something like this in a Chinese style game.
This was similar to some standalone western fantasy games, but those were usually spent on attributes like strength and intelligence.
After looking deeper into it, Lin Xue realised that Wulin Legen’s attributes were different to other western fantasy games.
The most important ones were three talents, namely Smarts, Sentimentality, and Bravery. There were also three attributes Qi, Energy, and Resourcefulness. There were also three images of Baguas for the other attributes.
The first Bagua had eyes, ears, flexibility, strength, Neigong, Qinggong, attack, and defence.
The second Bagua had mining, hunting, fis.h.i.+ng, foraging, medicine crafting, smithing, cooking, and tea ceremonies.
The third Bagua had medicine theory, chess, toxicology, surgery, art, books, wine, and flower arrangement.
Lin Xue was shocked to see this many attributes.
She pressed on the s.p.a.cebar, and all the attributes s.h.i.+fted.
She noticed that the lowest value for the attributes was zero, and highest was thirty. The total value of these attributes were probably set, and the player could only change how they distribute them.
Moreover, as the attributes change, the talents change too.
“This… is so rich!” Lin Xue was shocked.
