His limbs grew cold. Not wasting a breath, he sprinted towards the car. Finding three men laying down knocked unconscious, their tongues sticking out, broken noses bleeding, eyes blackened and battered in general, he didn't know what happened there.

Squatting over, he placed his finger under their nose.

Those men were alive but barely. 

"Boss wife, where is she!" He panicked before running to the other side of the car. Before he could set the emergency alarm, he paused.

Leaning against the car, Chen Yi was sitting down. Staring into the void, as if all the spirit had left her body. 

"Mrs Li, what is wrong? Are you alright?" He immediately went down on his knees and checked Chen Yi to find any signs of injury.

Surprisingly, there wasn't a single bruise. Not even a hair seemed to be out of place.

Then why did she look so heartbroken?

Fairly puzzled, Zhang Yufang asked again. "Mrs Li, is everything alright?"

Unexpectedly, Chen Yi spoke while staring at something. "Tell me, why did they have to do this?"

Zhang Yufang followed her gaze. There didn't seem to be anything particular in that direction. "Do... what?" Puzzled, he asked. "Did Mrs Li lose something precious?"

Other than the rubble and dirt from the road there were some... stepped over pastries. Although they seemed to be quite out of place, Zhang Yufang didn't make any connection.

When Chen Yi didn't answer, he looked back. "This place is not safe. We should head back first. Mrs Li, I'll need to—"

Zhang Yufang didn't get to finish when Chen Yi looked at him and smiled.

Before he could understand what that meant, her eyes rolled back and she fainted. 

Zhang Yufang. "...!"

"How did this happen?" Li Luxain didn't look good. He didn't look good at all. 

Fis.h.i.+ng out a kerchief from his pocket, Zhang Xin shakingly tapped his forehead to absorb the beads of sweat rolling down. 

There was no need to ask about Zhang Yufang. For he was not even here. After he had tapped onto the emergency alarm, Li Luxain whole man force was put on alert.

From sending in reinforcement to bringing Boss wife to the penthouse, everyone had their breath stuck in their throat. It was not until a team of doctors waiting upon her confirmed that what knocked Boss wife out wasn't those gangsters but a simple, suspicionless cold did everyone dared to start breathing again.

However, Li Luxian didn't look good.

With each pa.s.sing moment, he looked worse.

"The three of them are still unconscious. We have yet to initiate the interrogation."

"Well then, wake them up. Use whatever b.l.o.o.d.y method you have in store, I don't care." His tone dropped down a few levels, sounding very deep and dangerous. 

"Y-Yes, Boss!"

Li Luxian eyes swept through the crowd of highly trained, elite men. Irritations spurred as he thought. 

What was the use? They couldn't even protect the person precious to him.

Luckily those gangsters were just normal street fighters. Had they been a little bit skilled ones... Li Luxian didn't dare to think of consequences. He couldn't imagine losing Chen Yi.

"Where is Zhang Yufang?"

"He said he stumbled upon some clue running back here. After escorting Mrs Li here, he went down to give chase." Zhang Yufang had the mind to catch the real culprit who instigated this whole accident. In any case, that was the best. If Zhang Yufang came back with nothing to make up for his negligence his life would be h.e.l.l.

That Zhang Xin thought but didn't say.

  "Keep on high alert. Hasten up with the team of experts I a.s.signed you to train for Yi'er. This can not be delayed any further."

"Understood." 

Li Luxian said a few more instructions before making his way inside. 

He sighed as he gently closed the door behind him. Hidden underneath the covers, Chen Yi lay with her eyes close. Breathing evenly, her eyes trembled. 

When he first heard that Chen Yi had been attacked, what he felt couldn't be described in words. All his life he thought there was nothing in the world that could shake him to this extent. He has always been impa.s.sive in the face of difficulties, all those life-threatening situations never scared him, rather excited him. There had been not a few such situations since he dived into the b.l.o.o.d.y world of the underworld. 

But he never feared.

Until today, he realized what fear actually was.

When Chen Yi was first brought in her face had been flushed red, her breath had been shallow and her face twitched and withered as if she was in great pain.

Li Luxian had held onto her hand. 

At that moment, he wished he could take away all her pain.

It was not until the doctors injected the medicines via IV did her fever recede. 

Hovering over the bed, Li Luxian lifted his hand and placed it against her cheek.

Li Luxian was unwilling to part. He couldn't bear to have her disappear from his sight again.

And there he had that pa.s.sing thought for a while, back when he had asked for Zhang Xin opinion, that since Chen Yi was unwilling he should set her free. Now that had had had a taste of how it was like to be without her, he had realized what she meant for him.

This woman was not going anywhere. 

"Why is she not awake?." Li Luxian felt her temperature was back to normal. Yet she didn't wake up.

  The doctors said it would take time for the medicines to take effect but he couldn't wait. The look of pain had receded from her face, her expression had smoothened. At least, there was a bit of improvement. 

But her eyelashes trembled from time to time. Li Luxian didn't waste a second, he held onto her hand and squeezed it. She should know she was not alone, there was someone always here for her. 

Whatever nightmare she was having, there was some right beside her.
