Chapter 126 - Shy Little Girl

The phone lay at a distance, its persistent buzzing ignored by Chen Yi. The person must be Qin Chanpu.

After one glance, her hands put the phone on silent mode, the phone was not spared another look.

Instead, her eyes wandered outside, a contemplative frown settled over her face.

Looking back at the front, she said. "Head to the Capital Hospital."

Zhang Yufan was used to such abrupt commands by her Lady Boss. 

Without a change of expression, he steered the car in the opposite direction.

Before getting out, Chen Yi turned back and gave Zhang Yufan an icy look. "I don't care what your Boss commanded you but don't follow me."

Zhang Yufan was already pulling his gun out, his other hand reaching towards the door ready to push open it to trail behind Lady Boss.

He paused, looked back, gulped down finding his face freezing from the iciness of the glare, and nodded firmly. "I would just park the car."

Chen Yi nodded back and traversed the road, into the Hospital leaving a Zhang Yufan rubbing his arms, trying to get rid of the gooseb.u.mps.

'Ah, Boss wife can be scary at times...'

'Why did her face look like she was up to something bad?'

In the VIP room of the Hospital, the doctor flipped through the papers, reading Fu Liling instructions for her proper recovery. "That's all. Just avoid cold places and prefer proteinous foods in your diet. Drink lots of fluid but make certain to avoid carbonated drinks."

"Doctor Wen, can I have ice cream?" Fu Liling, tired of heavy doses of porridge on a daily basis, asked, her expressions blossoming in expectations.

Doctor Wen looked at her as if she was joking. "....you can't have anything cold."

Fu Liling smile faltered. 

Forget it, she was finally getting discharged from this medicine-smelling place. What could be better than that? Ice cream could wait.

Fu Liling encouraged herself, asking with an even bigger smile. "Then I can certainly have cheese pizza? I would make sure to eat it warm."

Doctor Wen: "..."

"Dairy products must be avoided."

Fu Liling face twitched. Not the cheese pizza, not her baby, please!

"What dairy about cheese pizza?!" 

"Cheese." Doctor Wen put on a weird expression. He coughed. "I have written down all the other instructions. Your case was particularly severe so I must insist... practice precaution." After throwing her remaining favorites into the 'banned item' list, the doctor sauntered away. 

Fu Liling's mood progressively worsened.

"I can't have fast food, can't have my favorite pizza, can't have ice cream, what's the point of discharging me? Just keep me here instead. Locked up and eating tasteless, watery porridge daily." If she was standing, Fu Liling would have stomped her feet down, tearing the doctor's instruction paper and throwing it over his face.

"Stop speaking nonsense." Xu Yuyan smacked the back of Fu Liling head bringing a 'yelp' out of her. "Do you even know, how many prayers I had to say for you? Finally, I got to take you back home and you had to say such ominous words?" 

"Geez, Mom I was just joking." Fu Liling let out a sheepish smile. "At least don't do that here, all the nurses are laughing."

A slight knock at the door was heard, prompting the pair of daughter and mother to turn their heads, looking at the door.

Expectation surfaced on both their faces.

Chen Yi peeked in, smiled, and emerged out of the door with a bouquet of flowers. Stepping in, she placed the flowers down and inquired about Fu Liling's health.

Fu Liling could hardly contain her excitement, she jumped out of her bed in no time, engulfing Chen Yi in a bear hug.

Xu Yuyan showed traces of disappointment, her smile faltering. Perhaps, it wasn't Chen Yi she had been expecting to appear...

However, the beaming look on her daughter's face was enough to bring back Xu Yuyan's smile.

Xu Yuyan shook her head, getting rid of depressive thoughts. Getting up, she greeted Chen Yi, her manner respectful as if she was indebted to Chen Yi. "I can't thank you enough for looking after my Ling'er while I was sick. If there is something my Fu family can do for you... don't hesitate. Just say it and I will—"

"Aunt Xu, please." Chen Yi supported Xu Yuyan, stopping her from bowing. "Don't embarra.s.s me, elders shouldn't be bowing before juniors. You do know I treat Ling'er as my little sister. I did not look after her with the expectation of some reward."

"Even then... I heard someone mention that you had run into some financial trouble. Chen Yi, over years I have treated you as my own daughter. If there is anything, don't hesitate..."

'Someone'

It could never be Fu Jianguo.

It was Chen Ying without any doubt.

'Oh, so her dear cousin must have tried to use my 'dest.i.tute' state to deter my image in front of the Fu family.'

But Chen Ying made a mistake, Xu Yuyan might be a high-cla.s.s lady with n.o.ble birth but her heart was pure. Unlike those of her peers, she was open-minded. 

Chen Yi believed Xu Xuyan won't look down upon her based on her financial status.

And she was right. Aunt Xu's att.i.tude was warm. She was even insistent on offering help.

Chen Yi let out a laugh. "Aunt Xu, you want to do something for me? Sure there is something you can do." Chen Yi sent a devilish smirk in Fu Liling direction. "Make certain our Ling'er strictly follows the doctor's instructions.

Fu Liling was baffled. "What! Why? What did I do to you?"

Chen Yi and Fu Liling engaged in playful banter, Xu Yuyan's lips tilting up. On occasions, one of them would let out a laugh.

"You silly kids."

Oh, how Xu Yuyan wished she could have this charismatic girl as her daughter-in-law. 

How she wished her mindless son had realized her worth.

How she wished...

Whenever Xu Yuyan plummeted down that pity, she would think... it would have been a great injustice to Chen Yi, getting her tied to Fu Jianguo, Xu Yuyan knew her son. She hated to say it but her son was not worthy of such a good girl.

All happened for the best.

Chen Yi deserved someone who would keep her happy, not her self ent.i.tled son.

This little thing brought her heart some peace.

As time pa.s.sed, Fu Liling started whining she wanted to go home. Xu Yuyan chastised her, urging her to wait some more, her eyes wandering back to the door with expectant eyes. She was waiting for someone.

"Mom, I am really getting sick of this smell."

Xu Yuyan sighed. "Fine. Let's go."

As the trio approached the exit, they stumbled upon a pair.

"Ying'er where are you? Today Ling'er is getting discharged. Father's abroad, Grandparents are waiting for her at home. We have to be present to take her home."

"Brother Fu, I..." Chen Ying bit her lips. She looked up, finding the man opposite the dinner table eyeing her in anger.

"What? Don't tell me you forgot."

Silence.

Chen Ying didn't know what to say. 

In Jiang Li's presence, she could not sweet-talk Fu Jianguo out of his anger.

"What excuse do you have? Ying'er after I overlooked your family scandal. But you can't even do as much as remember the Important things about my family?"

"It's not that—" Chen Ying felt a chill. Seldom had Fu Jianguo been this irritable.

"Don't bother calling me up." And he hung up.

Chen Ying was so frustrated, she felt like smas.h.i.+ng her phone.

'All because of that scandal...' In the past, Fu Jianguo would easily overlook such mistakes. Now, Chen Ying felt like Fu Jianguo was actively looking to find fault with her.

"He doesn't treat you well." Jiang Li said after a silence. "Ying'er, how much more would I need to do to make you realize my love is real. You were the one who opened my eyes. If not for you, I would be deceived my whole life by Gu Chiantao."

"Brother Jiang, I understand your feelings." Getting up, Chen Ying pa.s.sed on an apologetic look. "But matters of the heart are not decided like this. Brother Fu might not treat me well... But I have been with him for so long. I can't leave him."

A flash of disappointment pa.s.sed across Jiang Li's eyes. He smiled. "It's alright, I am willing to wait for you."

"It's not all about me, my parents won't let me break the engagement. Especially after the scandal..." Chen Ying trailed off.

Jiang Li responded at once. "Ying'er you don't need to worry, you might not believe it but I have put all my workforce into eradicating the video. Once I find out who was actually behind everything, I will make him suffer so much...no one would dare to say a word against you." That was a promise.

Chen Ying's eyes revealed subtle relief. She quickly hid her feelings, putting on a look of shame. "Brother Jiang did so much for me while I can't return your feelings..."

"If it can make you believe in my sincerity, I can even jump down a cliff for you." Jiang Li's face was full of doting, he crossed the table grasping Chen Ying's hands giving them a light squeeze.

"Brother Jiang... you, stop embarra.s.sing me." With a blus.h.i.+ng face, Chen Ying scurried away... as if she were a shy little girl teased by her lover's naughty remarks.

Once outside, her smile disappeared, her eyes flas.h.i.+ng.
