Madeline realized that her voice was harsher than she intended, and that Mia is uncomfortable while Hunter is glaring at her. She needs to fix this quickly!

Madeline cleared her throat and adjusted her mood (how much possible). "I mean… you just got engaged. An average wedding takes weeks to set up, months sometimes. Is there a reason for rus.h.i.+ng with the wedding? Is Mia pregnant?"

Mia choked on the non-existent saliva and waved her hands defensively. "No, no. I am not pregnant."

"True. Even if she is pregnant, it's too early to tell.", Sabrina said knowingly. "The two of them met through Elizabeth so they don't know each other for more than a month. Even if they did it on the first day they met, it would probably be early to find out if she is pregnant."

Mia inhaled sharply, but she didn't say anything because… she and Hunter did it on the first day they met. Now that she thinks about it, her behavior is scandalous.

Sabrina's comment on Hunter and Mia knowing each other for a month (or less) made Madeline and Nathan frown again. The two of them hoped that Hunter and Mia are dating longer, and that Hunter only delayed introducing them to each other, but this… is worse than they thought.

Hunter narrowed his eyes and looked at his parents. "It seems that I am the only one in favor of this marriage to happen…"

Mia sighed. Hunter can be such a baby sometimes. She placed her palm on his cheek and gently guided his head to face her. "Hunter, baby… don't go there. If I don't want to marry you, I would not accept your proposal. You know that I love you, right?"

"I do…", Hunter kept his fork in the plate and turned completely toward Mia. He held her hands in his and spoke to her like it's just the two of them in the room. "My dear, we are both grownups and we love each other, right?" He waited for Mia to nod before continuing: "And we are compatible beyond any reason. I know your likes and your dislikes not because I am stalking you or trying to indulge you, but because those are my likes and dislikes as well. Do you agree?"

"I feel the same.", Mia responded with a dreamy smile. "Meeting you was meeting my best friend, my other half, and I can't imagine my life without you."

Hunter smiled brightly. "Then? Why would we delay getting married? What will change in few months other than we spending more time together and confirming how we have more things in common? Getting married is just that last step of everyone knowing that we belong to each other. It's a public announcement of our love and commitment that we will stick to one another and make it work no matter what comes out way. And I am ready to scream to the whole world that I love you and that I am not playing and that I am yours… forever."

Mia sighed and smiled while shaking her head at Hunter in defeat. Everything he said makes sense. It is rushed and crazy and she can't explain it with reason, but deep inside she knows that it makes sense.

"Did you meet her parents?", Nathan's question directed at Hunter made Mia freeze.

"I want to marry Mia and spend my life with her, not with her parents.", Hunter responded.

Hunter noticed Mia's odd reaction, but he a.s.sumed that it's due to Nathan's hostility. Who would be happy to hear future in-laws being against their marriage? And Nathan's tone definitely was not an approving one.

Madeline sighed when she realized that Hunter's face darkened. She was afraid of this. "Don't get us wrong. It's not that we don't approve, but there are some things which you should think about before getting married."

Hunter tilted his head and narrowed his eyes at Madeline while wondering, what she's got up her sleeve now?

At this point, Hunter confirmed that his parents don't approve. And he is ready to fight them. Actually, he does not want to fight because it is not important.

In Hunter's opinion, the only thing that matters is that he and Mia are willing and committed to their relations.h.i.+p and taking it to the next level and making it work. As for his parents (or anyone else), they will either approve his union with Mia or not, and if they don't approve, he does not need them. Mia and he are living separately, and don't depend on their families. That is why Hunter does not see the importance of them bringing up her family.

Other than mentioning (once) that her family is from the West Coast, Mia didn't talk about them. Hunter took that as if Mia is not close to her family or does not care about them. In any case, that means how their blessings are not relevant.

The only connection Hunter has with his family is his job at Alpha group, but with his resume, he can get a job easily in many companies… it might be a less flashy one, but the salary would be sufficient to support the both of them and their current lifestyle.

"Like what?", Hunter's question directed at Madeline pierced through the uncomfortable silence.

Madeline's eyes s.h.i.+fted before she started raining questions: "Where will you live? How will you pay your bills? Mia is from New York, right? Can she just move to Seattle and abandon what she has there? What about her family? Do they approve of you rus.h.i.+ng into this? Did you meet them?"

Hunter smirked at the repeated inquiries about Mia's family and he guessed that Madeline kept those questions at the end just to mask them.

Hunter glanced at Mia whose head is lowered and he can't imagine how uncomfortable this is for her. He held her hand under the table and gave it a gentle squeeze before answering Madeline's questions.

"We are already sharing an apartment.", Hunter said smugly. "My salary is enough for any bills that come our way and Mia can have the freedom to get a job or not. I will support her either way. Her current income is from online sources, so other than friends in New York whom she can visit at any time, she will not abandon anything by coming here. As for her family, they are on the West Coast, so staying in Seattle will bring them closer. Anything else?"

"You met her family?", Nathan perked up waiting for an answer.

Hunter frowned. "No. Is that a prerequisite? We can go and visit them after we are married, whenever Mia wants. I will not pressure her with this, because I don't think it's important."

Nathan huffed at Hunter. "How can her family background not be important?"

"Mia is not depending on them in any way. Why would they be a factor I need to consider?"

Madeline sighed and shook her head in disapproval. "Hunter, honey… Family is important. No matter how you feel about it, family ties are something you can't neglect. Your elders will leave behind an inheritance which can be money or a.s.sets, but it can be debts and grudges as well. And people who come to collect on it don't care how close you are to them. Your family's influence and reputation can affect you when you least expect it. We are not saying that her family is bad or that they are some kind of criminals. We only hope that you know what you are getting yourself into."

"Fine. If you think that is such a big deal, we can go and meet Mia's family." Hunter turned to Mia. "Right?"

Mia stared at Hunter and blinked few times without finding words to respond.

Hunter saw that Mia is about to panic, and he quickly embraced her. "I'm sorry. I will not bring this up again. I don't care about your family. I only care about you… please, believe me."

He directed his glare at his parents. "Are you happy now? Is this why you called us here?"

Nathan pressed his lips into a line to prevent himself from saying another word and Madeline was on the verge of tears. Neither of them thought that this will turn into a heated argument. And their hearts cracked when they saw Hunter's expression full of anger and disappointment.

After few seconds of suffocating silence Hunter stood up and pulled Mia on her feet. "Let's get out of here."

Hunter and Mia walked out of the dining room when Liz stood up and rushed after them.

"Why did you do that? Mia is a good girl!", Sabrina hissed at her parents and dashed out to the hallway as well.

Max pinched the roof of his nose and mumbled: "This escalated quickly…"

Max is not worried about this argument because he knows that they will fix it… eventually. If Max managed to mend his relations.h.i.+p with Nathan and Madeline, Hunter will do it as well.

But Max is concerned that Liz's mood will be off because her friend (aka Mia) is upset, and if Liz is not in a good mood… will Max get his dessert tonight? And they just got back to 'touching' status! d.a.m.nit!

Two breaths later, Max also stood up and walked out. He needs to check on Elizabeth.

"You are not going after them?", Nathan asked Madeline.

Madeline shook her head. "Hunter is furious. I never saw him this angry. If I go, it will only get worse. In a day or two we can talk calmly… I hope."
