Max and Liz arrived at the breakfast terrace and found Mia, Hunter, Ashton, Derek, Mike and Jake at the table, having a lively discussion about their upcoming hike.
McKenzie, Oliver and Lewis are two tables away.
Max and Liz sat at the separate table, next to the one where Mia and Hunter are, and Max went to get coffee for him and Liz as soon as he helped her with her chair.
Liz observed Max as he walked away, and Mia had to poke her with a finger to get Liz's attention.
"Pst! Are you coming for a hike?", Mia asked in a low voice, like it's a secret.
"Hmm? Yes.", Liz responded absentmindedly.
Mia leaned closer and whispered: "Did you two go all the way?"
Liz blinked. "What?"
"The way you are looking at Max is… different."
Liz smiled and pinched Mia's nose. "Mind you own business."
Mia frowned and rubbed her nose. She observed Liz for few seconds before voicing her deduction: "So… you didn't."
"How do you know?"
"Hehehe… If I tell you, you will conceal it when the time is right.", Mia teased.
How much Mia knows Liz, if they did it, she would explode into a blush and ask for a shovel to dig a hole to hide. Mia wondered if Liz's dreamy gaze means that Liz is becoming aware how she is in love with Max.
Liz rolled her eyes at Mia and continued looking at Max who was already walking toward her with two cups of coffee.
Max and Hunter chatted about the hike and Hunter called staff to tell them to prepare hiking boots and backpacks for Liz and Max. He already called it for everyone else who is coming which includes: Hunter, Mia, Ashton, Derek, Mike, Jake, McKenzie, Oliver and Lewis. And now Max and Liz.
Madeline and Nathan came down for breakfast and they joined Max and Liz at the table when Hunter was excitedly talking about the trail they will take.
"At 9:30, a shuttle will drop us to the start of the trail, and we should be back in about three hours, maybe four.", Hunter said and continued his explanation how the trail is not a very long one, it circles around a mountain and they will stop at a great vantage point after about five miles, which shows breathtaking views of the jungle, and the ocean. The trail continues higher up, but they will not go further because they need to return in time for their flight back home. The resort will prepare sandwiches and beverages for each of them, so they will eat at the vantage point before heading back down the same way they climbed up.
Liz listened with a slight frown. Other than the pretty views, what else is good about it? One way about five miles? That is a total of ten miles! Back in three-to-four hours? Are they going to run up the mountain? Suddenly, this idea of a hike does not sound too good.
Liz glanced a Max and wanted to ask if the two of them can go snorkeling… or maybe cliff jumping… She does not mind losing her top again, but walking ten miles out of which five are uphill? Do they know that Liz hired Olivia to do her groceries because she huffs and puffs when she goes to the store three blocks away? Ah, she knew that she was supposed to exercise, but she was busy, alright?
Everyone seems pumped up to go, and if she bails out now, she will be the wobbly one. How embarra.s.sing.
Max noticed that Liz's mood dropped. "What is worrying you?"
"I don't know if I can make it that far…", Liz admitted.
Max smiled and rubbed her shoulder. "Don't worry. We will go slow and take breaks whenever you need. We already confirmed online that along the trail are great views before the vantage point. If it seems too much, we will just return. OK?"
Liz relaxed. If they can return anytime then it's not so bad. It will be like a walk in the park. Right?
Madeline observed Max and Liz and smiled gently. Her son is taking good care of his pregnant girlfriend. Light exercise is good for a healthy pregnancy.
Max and Liz went to get some food. They will go hiking after this and they need energy.
Max got a blueberry m.u.f.fin and a toast with apricot jam.
He waited patiently for Liz to make her selection and he was surprised to see how many pineapple slices she took. She ended up with two full plates. One with pastries and the other one with pineapples.
"You like pineapples?", he asked when they took their seats back at the table.
"This is for you."
"For me?" Max was confused. It's not that he does not like pineapples, but this is too much.
Liz nodded and pushed the plate with pineapples in front of him. She leaned closer and said in a whisper: "You will taste better. Sweeter."
"Sweeter?" He still didn't get it.
Elizabeth glanced at his crotch area.
It took few seconds for Max to realize that she is talking about his s.e.m.e.n tasting sweeter.
His eyebrows raised in slow motion and he stared at her for some time.
Liz looked at his confused expression and decided to explain (in a low voice, because his parents are there): "Studies show that fruits help. Pineapples have the biggest effect. And you should limit you coffee intake."
Max wanted to ask: who is doing studies on the taste of s.e.m.e.n? Is that funded by the government? But who is he to question her? She is an expert. The fact that she wants him to taste better means that she wants to go down on him again, and to swallow.
Max was unable to suppress his grin while eating pineapples. Ah, he will think of Liz kneeling in the shower whenever he sees a pineapple. This marks the point in time when Max started seeing pineapples as... s.e.xy.
Max cleared his throat and asked: "How long before the next sample can be tested?"
Liz thought for a second before responding: "If you modify your diet and stick to it, in forty-eight hours."
He smiled smugly and put another piece of pineapple in his mouth. This… He didn't expect this. Max confirmed that as much as he can read Liz, sometimes she is unpredictable. In a good way.
Max and Liz finished their food, and Max was too full on pineapples to eat the m.u.f.fin. The two of them went to their room to change for the hike.
Madeline nudged Nathan and pointed with her chin toward the plate Max left behind. "Look. Because of Liz, Max is eating fruits. She is improving even his diet."
Nathan reached for the untouched blueberry m.u.f.fin and took a bite. "It's very good."
"I didn't say it's not good. But fruits are healthier.", Madeline explained and remembered Liz's pregnancy. "Maybe Max is eating healthier to give Liz company."
Nathan wanted to point out that Liz ate pastries and drank coffee, but he decided not to say anything. It does not matter.
At 9:30 AM, shuttle picked up our group of hikers and about fifteen minutes later, they found themselves on a small clearing.
They made sure that everyone is set up with: food, drinks, hiking shoes, binoculars, bug spray.
They all applied sunscreen and bug spray to their exposed skin, before heading toward the trail.
Hunter and Mia led the way and others followed.
Five minutes later, Liz realized that this is NOTHING like a walk in the park. The trail is mostly steep, and the soil is crumbling under their feet. It does not look stable, or safe. The sun was climbing higher, and the good thing was that they were walking between lush foliage which provided shade.
They were about half an hour into walking, when they reached the first clearing. The jungle below was like a s.h.a.ggy green carpet, and further down was a lighthouse, and the ocean. Liz used her binoculars to see the details. On the right, they could see glimpses of houses. Max told Liz that at next clearing, they can see that town better.
Few minutes later, they got a great view of the city. And then the trail curved a sharp left into the rainforest.
Dense foliage surrounded them, and they walked one-by-one on the muddy ground, even though it didn't rain in days. Rocks and tree roots were covering the trail, and Liz was on the verge of asking to head back. In her opinion, the only thing missing was Tarzan.
Liz paused at the sign warning hikers: 'Flash Flood'. Few steps later, there was a sign: 'Falling Rocks'.
Liz sighed. If this is medium-easy, she does not want to know about the difficult ones.
In truth, the walk was pleasant, especially because people chatted and joked and pointed at things with 'look a that'. The birds were chirping, tropical flowers specled the usually green suroundings. It was nice. The only thing to be wary off is where they step, because some of the rocks are slippery and it's easy to trip on the tree trunks.
"How are you doing?", Max asked Liz with concern in his voice. "Let me know if you need a break."
Liz smiled. "I'm OK."
Gradually, Liz relaxed and enjoyed the experience.
Liz figured that tomorrow she will have sore muscles, but that is tomorrow. And she will take painkillers. Now she is an adventurer! Exploring the jungle!
Mia, Hunter and Hunter's four training buddies were in front and Liz joined their chatter. Luckily, they didn't walk fast.
Liz was getting bolder. Moving off the trail to the left or right to observe an insect or some bird in the distance (with her binoculars).
Max was one step behind her, laughing at her silly antics. Few times he supported her when she slipped, to prevent her from falling.
"Look at that!", Liz exclaimed every few steps while pointing at something and making sure that Max saw it before she moved on.
Max watched Liz and smiled. He likes that she is enjoying the experience. It's something different, something new, and they are doing it together. His heart was full with the thought that someday Liz will think of hiking and she will remember this moment, with him by her side.
