"Rina is not here?", Max asked the obvious.
"Jack arrived. Rina said that they will be late and not to wait for them.", Madeline responded while watching Max pull a chair for Liz, like a true gentleman.
Max got coffee for him and Liz and then chatted with his parents briefly about the plans for the day.
Liz found it difficult to focus. Her eyes were glued to Max's perfect profile and she was still adjusting to the big revelation of Max's kiss from earlier that morning.
She started understanding his statement that she is rus.h.i.+ng and skipping steps.
Max's light kisses so far made Liz's brain numb while focusing only on him and ignoring everything around them. But the kiss from that morning was different: her brain was not numb, it's the opposite… her senses heightened, and the world faded while she and Max were merging into one. That kiss was gentle and intense and caring and demanding… a mind altering event which shook her to the core.
Liz has to acknowledge that her inexperience is showing, and she is lucky to have a great man like Max to guide her through this, to introduce her to the wonders that a relations.h.i.+p and physical intimacy can offer.
However, if he thought that she will slow down, he is gravely mistaken. Elizabeth was always a fast learner, devouring a week worth of materials in a matter of hours. After experiencing the amazing kiss from that morning, Elizabeth is hungry and the man next to her looks… delicious.
Liz was startled when a piece of cereal hit her cheek. Her confused expression met Mia's grin.
"s.p.a.cing out?", Mia teased.
"Why did you throw food at me?"
Mia leaned closer and spoke in a hushed voice only for Liz to hear: "I called you three times, but you are not responding."
"Oh…", Liz realized that Mia is probably right. She was staring at Max and having naughty thoughts so it's probably a good thing that Mia pulled her out of that daze.
Liz panicked, what was her expression? How can she be so shameless? His parents are right there!
Mia noticed that Liz's does not look good. "Are you OK?"
"I'm just hungry.", Liz lied with a straight face. There is no way that she will admit in front of all these people her thoughts.
Max heard Liz say that she is hungry and swiftly stood up. He apologized while gesturing to the area where food is: "I'm sorry. I know that usually you have only coffee in the morning, and I a.s.sumed that we can chat…"
Liz was surprised that her hasty excuse made Max feel guilty. She stood up and smiled gently while trying to comfort him. "Don't worry about it. This morning my appet.i.te is more than usual."
Liz missed that her words directed at Max made Madeline break into a knowing grin while she scanned Elizabeth's abdomen.
Max also didn't notice sudden change in his mother's expression. He ushered Liz toward the big buffet-style table full of fruits, pastries and other breakfast items. On the side, chefs are available to make fresh crepes and omelets based on the requests from the guests.
Madeline observed her son lovingly hover over his girlfriend while putting things into her plate and she leaned closer to Nathan.
"Dear, we should hurry up with those background checks…", Madeline whispered to Nathan and gestured with her eyes toward Max and Elizabeth.
The one who didn't miss the exchange is McKenzie. She didn't see everything, but she saw Max bolt to his feet as soon as Liz said that she is hungry with an apology like her hunger is his fault. And did he say that she usually has coffee in the morning? How close are they? She can see how Max is carefully helping Liz pick food, and also how Madeline is looking at them with sparkles in her eyes, silently giving them her blessings.
"Zi, where are we going after this?", Oliver asked about their next activity, seeing that they are almost done with breakfast.
Out of three of them, McKenzie is the most opinionated one, and Oliver and Lewis don't care what they do, they are content with anything. That is why they usually let McKenzie pick.
"I'm still thinking.", McKenzie answered dryly while her hands were tightly balled into fists under the table.
In truth, she wants to hear what Max plans to do, so that she can join.
Max and Liz returned to the table with plates full of food and Liz paused at the sight of another couple who was heading toward Nathan and Madeline.
"Rina, Jack…", Madeline greeted them warmly. "Please, join us for breakfast… Nathan and I are going golfing in few minutes… Jack, dear, how was your flight?"
Jack smiled. "Good. Thanks, for asking."
"Liz, Mia…", Rina called enthusiastically. "This is my fiancé, Jackson… Jack, I told you about them…"
Liz narrowed her eyes at the sight of a tall man with dark brown hair, beard trimmed into a goatee, dark eyes… and it took her a second for scenes from the garden to flash through her mind.
Jack's eyes widened briefly when they met Liz's, but it was only for a second before he smiled amiably and extended his hand for a handshake.
Liz glanced at Rina. She wanted to tell her that this man she is proudly introducing as her fiancé is going around loose, chasing women and introducing himself as 'Jay', but… she couldn't.
Liz ignored Jack's handshake. She nodded slightly in greeting with a fake smile: "Nice to meet you."
Jack's expression cracked for a moment when he realized that this is the second time that Liz refused to shake his hand. He diverted his hand toward Mia and greeted with: "Nice to meet you", ambiguously in-between Liz and Mia.
Liz took her seat and put a grape into her mouth while doing her best not to look at 'Jay'. Ah, she thought that it's a name like J-y, but actually, he just gave her his first initial.
Liz wondered, does Rina knows that her Jack is a cheater? She told herself not to jump into conclusions. He flirted with her, but she does not have any evidence that he is cheating and if she just blurts it out, it will be an unfounded accusation. After all, Sabrina and Jackson are engaged for six years and they dated before that. Even if Jack is a cheater, without evidence it's her word against his, and considering that he is in their lives for many years while she is a newcomer… she can see that it would just cause a ruckus and put her at a disadvantage.
When Nathan and Madeline stood up to head for their morning golf, Liz nodded absentmindedly while Madeline showered her with reminders to take care, eat and rest well. Ah, she is a caring mother that Liz is missing in her life. Maybe she should get used to all the hugs and hand holding.
Before they headed away, Madeline told Max to take good care of Liz.
'Today the woman is extrcaring', Liz thought.
"Are you OK?", Max's concerned voice reached Liz.
She smiled meekly, feeling like all energy left her.
Of course, he noticed that something is off. Should she tell him about Jay? Sabrina is his sister. To make this worse, Max already asked previously if something happened in the garden and she told him that there was nothing. Ah, if she tells him that Jackson was. .h.i.tting on her, it will not only expose Jack's shameless nature, but her lie as well.
But she can't lie, even if she can't say the truth.
"I'm not sure.", she responded and leaned back into the chair while looking up into the cloudless sky.
"Do you want to go back to room to rest?", Max offered, a.s.suming that she is tired.
Liz told herself to snap out of it. She is just making Max worried. She will think about this, compose her thoughts and then tell him. After all, there is no rush. Jackson is flirting around probably for a long time and few hours or few days until Max finds out about it, won't make any difference.
Liz bit her lip nervously while thinking that with Jackson (aka Jay) and McKenzie around, maybe this weekend will not be so fun and relaxing, how she imagined. Ah, she hopes that no more trouble comes her way.
This is Liz's first vacation with her boyfriend, and she will have fun no matter what!
"What are we doing after this?", Liz asked Max with renewed vigor.
"We are going cliff jumping!", Mia announced, not trying to hide that she was eavesdropping on Liz's and Max's conversation. "Want to join?"
Liz looked at Max, silently asking for his opinion.
Max shrugged. "We can go. There is also surfing nearby."
"I've never done any of those.", Liz admitted.
Max felt Liz's anxiousness build up. He rested his arm on her chair and rubbed her shoulder gently. "There is a first time for everything. I will be with you."
Liz was lost in Max's deep blue eyes, and at that moment no matter what he asked, she would say 'yes'.
Liz smiled at the thought that there will be many 'first times' with Max, and she is looking forward to each and every one of them.
Mia clapped in excitement when she saw Liz nod in agreement.
A second later, Mia turned to Hunter and the food in front of her, because she could not watch Max and Liz exchange loving gazes which made the air around them sticky from all the sweetness.
