Lu Jia’er sat with Professor Li for quite a while before Jin Xiangdong and his secretary returned.
Lu Jia’er sent a questioning look to Jin Xiangdong who answered with the expressions in his eyes. “Mrs. Li, it is past noon. Let’s grab some lunch.” Jin Xiangdong said to Professor Li.
Professor Li shook her head. “I am not hungry. You can go. Thank you for coming to visit Yan Bo.”
“Mrs. Li, how can you skip lunch? Let’s go and have something to eat. The secretary will be here. She will call us if anything happens.” Jin Xiangdong tried to persuade Professor Li.
Professor Li responded with a shake of her head again. “I am not hungry. Go ahead!”
Jin Xiangdong was not making any progress in solving this problem. Lu Jia’er proposed another solution at this moment, “Mrs. Li, if you don’t want to go outside to have lunch, I will get some take-away food for you later.”
“No. Thank you.” Professor Li answered, emotionlessly.
“Mrs. Li, it is critical that you remain healthy as well. When Jason wakes up, you will have to take care of him. You are his moral support.” Lu Jia’er said in a soft voice.
Professor Li turned to Lu Jia’er. The latter’s words were directed straight at a crucial point. Indeed, Professor Li was the moral support for Professor Yan who had just been discharged from the hospital and Jason who was in the ICU. If Professor Li were to collapse, the family would collapse with her.
“Buy me something to eat.” Professor Li withdrew her previous remark but she was still unwilling to leave the hospital.
“Okay!” Jin Xiangdong said.
The secretary stayed to keep Professor Li company while Jin Xiangdong and Lu Jia’er went to get some lunch for Professor Li.
Lu Jia’er was dying to know about Jason’s status. “What did the doctor say?”
Jin Xiangdong’s tone suggested that his mind was weighed down. “Due to the impact of the blast, Jason’s head and internal organs suffered severe trauma. The surgery was successful but he is still in critical condition. Even when he pulls through this critical period, whether he can regain his consciousness is dependent on his willpower.”
Those words made Lu Jia’er anxious as well. Her face became clouded. “It is all because of me! If I had not asked Jason to follow up with Su Han’s case, he would not be lying in the ICU now.”
Jin Xiangdong held Lu Jia’er’s hand. “Neither of us wanted to see this happen. Even if you didn’t tell him to do that, Jason would not have looked on indifferently. We will have to tackle many difficulties from now on. Stay strong!”
Lu Jia’er stared at Jin Xiangdong. He was comforting her but he must be feeling just as much pain as anyone else with Jason in this state. Yet, he was right. Coming back to China did not mean that they were going to be safe. On the contrary, it was likely that they had to face even more complicated situations.
“Yes!” Lu Jia’er nodded.
Soon, the night fell. The city became all the more alluring, dressed with multicolored street lamps.
It had been eight hours since they had arrived back in China. Lu Jia’er’s nerves had been on the edge. At the same time, it was as if nothing had happened. This sense of quietness was all the more dreadful because before a storm hit, it was always eerily quiet.
She did not go back to her apartment. She was still living in Jin Xiangdong’s place.
Currently, she was alone at the house. Jin Xiangdong had not come back yet. She knew that he was with Professor Li at the hospital.
The thought of Jason’s situation filled Lu Jia’er heart with guilt. Such misfortune had fallen on Jason. If she continued to stay with Jin Xiangdong, what kind of disaster would she bring him?
Sitting on the sofa, Lu Jia’er found it too appalling to follow that train of thought. Right at that moment, the ring from her cell phone interrupted her thoughts.
