Stench of smoke, abnormal material burning and a heady sick-sweet stench of iron overwhelmed their senses as they came closer to home.
Corin's limbs coiled with tension that made his sprints faster, overtaking his brother and father.
"Hurry Darick!" Alroy shouted.
Darick cursed his weak breath burning against his chest. He wasn't a fast runner as his brother, giving his all just to keep up with his seniors.
They ambled hastily down a hill and into a field of tall poppies revealed under the moonlight and orange-black sky more obvious above their heads.
Corin gulped at the blood-red flowers swaying to the call of a shrieking wind. A smoky haze draped about the fields the further they delved into the valley. Ash began to rain from the sky. Corin hoped his gut feeling was wrong and the smoke and ash were not what he feared.
High-pitched shrieking made them stagger to a sudden stop with their hands covering their ears.
"Nightstalkers!" Alroy warned his sons at the approaching formation of eight-foot winged-lizards flying towards them.
"Guth Sàmhach!" His deep voice bellowed across the field as he called upon a silence spell to the creatures to bind their voices, so they couldn't evoke magic by voice.
Corin instinctively clapped his hands together in a prayer and called upon an ice spell to cast sword shards at the scaly demons.
The nightstalkers swooped at the men's heads with their outstretched wings; their scales gloried in the warped orange-white light.
Darick pulled out his longsword and called upon an Ethereal spell to bathe the blade in blue fire. He clumsily slashed at sinew scaly legs with spread clawed feet intent to rip his head off. A high angle thrust saw his blue eyes lock on to a fiery red eye of a nightstalker. His hand relaxed, lowering his thrust.

"Darick!" Corin shouted, trying to snap his brother out of the soul-lock power the nightstalker had on him.
His heart pounded at his chest when he called upon a wind spell to throw the nightstalker backwards and away from Darick.
"Claidheamh deigh!" His voice carried to the nightstalker that was scrambling back to its feet.
It bellowed out with outrage before combusting into ash.
A rhythmic thumping drew the remaining nightstalkers away from them and back to the direction of their village.
This didn't allay the men's fears.
"Darick!" Corin raced to him and sighed when he recovered quickly.
They sprinted for home.
