"Sarah," John stared, "I'm glad that you're here! Have you settled into your room properly?"
"Yes sir," She responded.
"Great! Do you have a roommate?"
Sarah shook her head no. John smiles softly and looked over at me, "Great! Carter will be rooming with you!"
I opened my mouth to speak but John held his hand up to silence me. Ignoring that, I leaned forward and whispered angrily, "What the f.u.c.k happened to needing a room by myself so I can control my powers?"
"You're in the past, Carter! If anything you'll need Sarah to be there!"
I was angry. I didn't know why but I was. I wanted to punch something and I knew that I was about to snap. Taking a deep breath, I slammed my hand on the table and everything went quiet. I didn't care though.
"I'm so f.u.c.king confused and you're not making this s.h.i.+t any easier! How the f.u.c.k is my mom alive when I thought that she was murdered when I was a baby? How the h.e.l.l is Sarah here when I am in the past?" I asked.
John sat back in the chair with a smirk on his face. I scoffed and shook my head before looking around to see everyone in the room stood frozen except for John and I. Confused, I turned back towards John as he smiled.
"You've gotten your second power," He said while standing up, "You can freeze time but you have to learn how to control it since you just did this without realizing it!"
"Alright," I mumbled but I was still confused and shocked on how I did it.
"You're in the past and your point is to figure out the answers to those questions that you just asked me,"
I stood there for a few minutes before nodding my head slowly. I still didn't know where to start and the longer I stayed here the more questions I'd need answered. It wasn't easy and I'm just at that point where I want to wake up and pretend that I never went back in time. Suddenly, my thoughts were cut off by my Mother speaking again.
"Is everything okay?"
John looked up at her, tossed me a look, then placed a smile upon his face while staring back at my mom, "Everything is fine! I was explaining a few rules to Carter,"
"That's fine! Take your time!" My mom responded with a soft smile on her face.
"I hope you understand," John said while staring at me. I nodded my head before he turned his attention back to Sarah, "Sarah, lead your roommate to your room!"
"Come on," Sarah mumbled while waiting for me to follow behind her. I grabbed my bags and closed the door softly as I trailed behind her slowly. I looked around at everyone as they ran around and chatted with one another. We walked up the huge stairs and I backed away quickly as a group of guys raced downstairs almost knocking me over.
"Is everyone here adults or something?" I asked Sarah. She turned around and looked at me out of the corner of her eyes.
"Everyone here is 18 or older but the oldest are 23," Sarah answered, "Once you're 23, you move out and you're officially apart of the real world!"
"What's the point in everyone coming here at 18? We've basically lived our entire lives as uneducated mutants so what's the point of coming here when you're a legal adult?"
"Everyone gets their powers at different ages so there's a law here in Zims where they give mutants 18 years to get their powers and once you've got them then you come to Zims Academy which is the school for mutants. We can't leave Zims and go to different states with the normal kids so we have our own school here in our own city,"
"So we stay here for 5 years?"
Sarah nodded, "Everyone doesn't stay 5 years though. There has been some who dropped out and just went into the real world,"
"And how did that work out for them?" I asked.
"I wouldn't know because I don't think anyone has heard from them anymore,"
Well then.
Sarah pushed the door open and I walked in. I looked around at the huge room. There was tan carpet on the floor, a huge chandelier hanging from the ceiling, a television on a tv stand, a huge window with white and tan curtains, there was a desk with two chairs pushed under the table, and two queen sized beds on each side of the room. I placed my bags on my bed and turned faced Sarah who stood there.
"Sorry I never introduced myself, I'm Carter," I greeted while holding my hand out.
"I'm Sarah," Sarah replied as she placed her hand in mine, "Sarah Jenkins!"
"It's nice to meet you,"
"Let's take you downstairs so I can show you around a bit," She said before heading towards the door and walking out. I quickly followed behind her as she smiled softly at everyone who she walked by.
"Today's quite the busy day since the last group of mutants are arriving!" Sarah explained while I followed closely behind her, "After today, the gates to Zims Academy will close and all mutants will be behind those gates until it's time for them to graduate,"
"That's a long time behind these gates,"
"I described that as if it is a prison but it's not! Obviously, you get your freedom. There's the holidays where most leave campus and go home to be with their families especially since there are many kids here who come from different countries! You can also leave the campus and go around Zims a bit but you have to have your badge with you at all times and you cannot leave this city," Sarah finished.
"I'm stuck in Zims forever then?" I asked as I rolled my eyes. Sarah scoffed before putting her arm around my shoulder.
"Of course not because once you've hit that age of 23! You're free to go wherever you want!" She said, "They are just trying to keep us safe! Those normal people out there don't really like us. They fear us and the only reason why they even put up with mutants is because we can do things that their s.h.i.+tty law enforcement cannot do but they're just waiting for the opportunity where they can make us illegal,"
I stared at her for a moment because she was right. In the future, mutants were illegal. There were only a few who could actually go out and fight and she was one of them.
Sarah sighed and put her hands on her hips. She turned her head towards me and smiled, "I like you! I know we just met but you're a pretty cool girl! I feel like I know you!"
I chuckled, "You'd be surprised,"
