"He should be alright. We have to observe him for the night," Mingyue said.
"Were you around when His Majesty visited Prince Lu Wei earlier?" the princess asked hesitantly.
Mingyue looked up and smiled. She seemed to have guessed that the crown princess was going to see her and ask about this matter. "I was. You wanted to know what they were talking about?" Mingyue saw the princess hesitated and continued, "His Majesty allowed me to stay when he meets Prince Lu Wei."
The princess was surprised as she heard this. "It was not a private conversation?"
Mingyue thought over it for a while before she said, "I was helping the prince with his dressing when the Emperor came in. His Majesty only allowed me and my brother to be around when he met the prince. Elder brother said that the Emperor did not mind if you wanted to know the details of their conversation. That was why he allowed me to stay."
"What were they talking about?" Princess Lingchen asked after a few seconds of silence. She recalled the Emperor's expression when he showed up at the feast. His Majesty was not too happy.
Mingyue's expression grew serious. She was around both when her brother questioned the prince over the incident and during the Emperor's visit. She knew what was going on with Prince Lu Wei. Then, she spoke in a lower voice, "Prince Lu Wei think that someone led him towards the tiger's area to kill him. According to the prince, it was someone from Qian Rong."
The princess' gaze flashed with shock. "An a.s.sa.s.sination attempt?"
Mingyue nodded. "The relations.h.i.+p between Prince Lu Wei and his Crown Prince was not good. They suspected that the Crown Prince might try to harm the prince as he was in Da Cheng. They wanted to blame Da Cheng if anything happened to him."
"Among the guests' princes, Prince Lu Wei had the worst background," Princess Lingchen mumbled to herself. She had heard of the dispute between the royal siblings of Qian Rong. Prince Lu Wei was born from a concubine outside of the palace and was only brought into the palace when his mother had pa.s.sed away. While the Qian Rong's ruler favored him due to pity, the others did not like him. After all, no one really knew about his concubine mother.
Princess Lingchen snapped out of her thought and turned to Mingyue. "What did His Majesty say?"
"His Majesty agreed to let Prince Lu Wei stay in this country until he is fully recovering. Da Cheng will provide safety for the prince as long as he is in this country," Mingyue said. "Prince Lu Wei promised that he would not allow Da Cheng to be implicated if anything should happen to him."
"How is he planning to do that?"
Mingyue shook her head. "I don't know." She thought for a while and spoke again. "Your Highness, if you're planning to see Prince Lu Wei, I suggest you visit him tomorrow. The prince had lost a lot of blood, and he is now resting."
Princess Lingchen nodded and stood up. "Very well. I can't be here for too long or else the Empress would be worried."
"Yang Yun went after Prince Jing; he will come back with the result of his investigation later. But Princess, you still need to be wary of the others Prince Jing might not be the only one who wanted to hurt you." Mingyue escorted the Princess out of the tent and met Ah Zhen at the entrance. "Ah Zhen, find me immediately if you noticed something wrong."
"Yes, Physician Jiang," Ah Zhen nodded.
Soon, the Crown Princess and her maidservant returned to the feast. Princess Lingchen swept her gaze around the surrounding and stopped when she saw Prince Jing with Chancellor Chen in a conversation. Prince Jing tilted his head up when he noticed someone was looking at his direction. Their gaze met. For a while, there was a mixture of surprise and confusion in Prince Jing's expression when he saw the Princess. He quickly recovered and smiled.
Princess Lingchen scoffed inwardly at Prince Jing's reaction. She turned her gaze to the Empress and saw the Empress relieved expression. The princess gave her mother a nod before she joined her at the seat. The princes had a duel among themselves as entertainment. Their match seemed to intensify as she returned with each prince were trying to show up their strength in front of the Princess.
