The next dance was also determined randomly, but there seemed to be one more predetermined decision.
"Oh… well if it isn't…"
"Today is Pannika Stein."
"Oh of course. I thought this would happen."
"I had hoped, but… I knew this would happen too."
Even if she didn't want to, Dana heard all the grumbling around her.
"Soon we will have the free time to enjoy ourselves after the Princess finishes her dance with Sir Gawain. Afterwards, let us go over to my salon to say h.e.l.lo."
Dana nodded as her eyes followed the Emperor who was dancing around and around with the woman named Pannika Stein. To Dana, Pannika Stein was a beautiful woman, but not nearly as beautiful as the Emperor. His good looks were incomparable.
"Who is she?" She whispered to Madam Rurin.
"Ah, she is a young woman named Pannika Stein."
"…is she his fiancee?"
With Madam Rurin's eyes still glued to His Majesty, she shook her head. "That's not it. Officially, they don't have a relations.h.i.+p; however, informally they do."
What nonsense. So they're not planning on getting married, but instead they're dating?
Well, he is the Emperor of a country. It was surprising to find that there was only one woman in her position.
It was still a bitter reality that Dana didn't want to acknowledge until she was forced to see it. She nodded with tears in her eyes. The distance between the Emperor and her was as vast as an ocean. She may have desired the Emperor to be single forever, but she also knew how impossible that reality was. If he were to die without a child that would be even worse.
'If Your Majesty is happy, then that is for the best.'
The pair were truly a beautiful couple. If His Majesty was happy, then Dana will give them her blessing. They must be genuinely in love with each other. She watched the Emperor dance with a warm heart again.
'Huh?'
There was something strange going on. Dana noticed that the Emperor was staring at Pannika's face, but he didn't have the warmth someone would have when looking at a loved one. However, he didn't have a look of hatred either. His face was pure stone and not entirely different from a wall.
'Does he hate dancing?' She stared inquisitively at them. 'Or is His Majesty ashamed of the clothes he's wearing? Did Pannika Stein hide a tack on her palm? Is he hungry?'
Her speculations were endless.
"They're unofficial, but does that mean they're in love with each other?"
Madam Rurin looked at her softly as she seemed to misunderstand why Dana seemed disappointed.
"Oh no, I'm not… in love with His Majesty. In spirit, I'll support whoever His Majesty loves. I'll believe in his decisions."
"Your heart is very deep and pure, Dana," Madam Rurin praised her. Although Dana felt she didn't do much to be praised… she still felt happy. From the beginning, the Emperor was someone impossible to reach. People who live in the same world can have the right to be jealous.
"By the way…"
Oh how she does want the right to be jealous.
"His Majesty looks cold towards her. I don't think they're dating."
Madam Rurin was shocked at what Dana said. "You must have very good eyes to be able to realize that. Until now, no one else has noticed that."
"Eh?" She turned her head towards the madam in surprise. It seemed her guess was right and that there was more than meets the eye here. She wanted to ask more, but the song was over. Madam Rurin stepped up to greet the couple so Dana had to shut her mouth. Seeing her move, the Emperor who was escorting Pannika Stein, headed this way.
"Ugh!" Dana clutched her chest when she saw the Emperor heading this way. Just looking at him put her heart at its limit, but now he was approaching closer and closer. She'll be grateful to her heart if it lets her live through this.
The Emperor stopped before Madam Rurin and her. Pannika Stein, who was holding onto the Emperor's arm, suddenly let go of him.
"Madam Rurin."
"It's good to see you Your Majesty." Madam Rurin lightly greeted the Emperor and Dana bowed her head beside her.
"Madam Rurin."
"Lady Pannika." She greeted Pannika.
"I heard you travelled from far away. It's good to see you again."
"Thank you, Lady Pannika. It is my joy to see you so healthy and beautiful."
"I am always thankful for your kind words." Pannika Stein was a strange woman. Her smile and her voice was beautiful. She spoke elegantly and she seemed to bloom like a bright flower; however, she doesn't seem alive. Her smile was unnatural. It was smooth and without flaws, but had no feeling to them. Dana felt nervous around her.
"I was late in telling you, but welcome back Your Majesty. My heart is deeply delighted that you have returned safely. Today's beautiful ball has left no shortage of feelings for Your Majesty's mercy and the prosperity of the Empire."
"Thank you. I hope you enjoy it." The Emperor no longer felt like a ruler when Pannika paid her respects and walked to the other side of the ball.
'Weird weird weird! I have a feeling Pannika Stein didn't come here just to meet His Majesty.'
Dana felt that there was some exchange that she couldn't quite catch. The woman said something else, but Dana didn't know exactly what that was.
After his dance with the Princess, the head knight Gawain headed towards us. Unlike the Emperor, his face was lively and he seemed to wear his heart on his sleeve. There was no room for complicated thinking for him. He gave the same greeting to the Emperor.
"And this is?" After the formal greetings were over, a young woman turned towards Dana.
Dana's eyes were glued to the gathering; it finally became her time to introduce myself.
Madam Rurin proudly introduced her, "Today I want to introduce you all to Lady Diana Gundal. I found her painting skills by chance at Gundal Manor and I had to bring her to our salon."
"My name is Diana Gundal. It is an honor to meet the Sun of the Empire and it is an honor to meet the Spring of the Empire." Dana courteously greeted them by memory. The power of repet.i.tive learning was amazing. With all the tension and excitement inside her, a certain thought came to her mind. If Madam Rurin was a teacher tutoring for exams, she would've received a perfect score thanks to the madam.
"I am glad to meet you Diana. I heard that you can paint unconventional and emotional paintings?" The young woman who spoke first had an enchanting smile. For a moment, Dana lost her train of thought but she managed to gather her wits. It was hard to think with the Emperor's s.h.i.+ning near her. She was not yet immune to his handsomeness.
"You praise me too much."
"Madam Rurin never exaggerates in her praise. I wish I could see your paintings someday."
"It is an honor."
She smiled at my answer. "Is Your Majesty curious about Dana's art work?"
The Emperor threw Dana an inattentive look. She stopped breathing as she waited for an answer. Her whole body was trembling.
"If she shares her art, I will look." The Emperor's tone was as cold as always, but Dana wasn't disappointed because she expected it. She was just thrilled to have him stare at her.
"Your Majesty is the same as always." The woman smiled and laughed for a while at his reply.
Due to how the ballroom was built, the amount of guests were limited so only high-ranking n.o.bles attended. Dana was busy trying to get herself out there, but it was time for everyone to part.
"Well, I will leave first." The young woman bid her goodbyes to the Emperor and left.
"Your Majesty," Sir Gawain called out to the Emperor. Beside the knight was the Princess who looked spooked. The Emperor nodded at them and turned his eyes elsewhere.
"Madam Rurin, can you give me a moment?"
"Lord Gawain?" She tilted her head at his unexpected request, but since Madam Rurin trusted him she didn't question Gawain. Since it looked urgent, she couldn't ask to see if it was okay for Dana to follow. It was too late anyway. The madam looked at the two people left behind and walked away.
Suddenly, it was only the Emperor and Dana left. Today Madam Rurin was supposed to be Dana's guardian so she decided to follow after her.
"Ah, well, um, me too." Dana awkwardly took a step forward, but then the Emperor dragged her by my elbow.
"Ugh!"
Clang!
A sharp metallic sound was heard.
Dana could hear a low tearing sound and the music of the ball was stopped. She couldn't breathe properly and she was halfway supported by the Emperor.
"Y, Your, Maj-es-"
It was difficult for her to even say ‘Your Majesty'. She could only look around with her eyes. Although she did say she wanted to die in his arms, she didn't think that would be appropriate right now. Mainly because she almost died. Dana looked down at the dagger lying at her feet and almost saw her life flash before her eyes.
The Emperor pushed Dana towards a table and she hid behind the table cloth. She was far away from where everyone else was so no one would remember where she was. The safest place for her was under the table. Right after Dana hid, more than 10 people burst unto the room.
"Die, Emperor!"
"I will never submit to an Emperor like you!"
"The Emperor cruelly murders his subjects! I will never acknowledge him!"
He was surrounded by the rebels, but the Emperor didn't move right away. Rather, he looked bored as he began to loosen his sword tied at his waist.
As he fully unsheathed his sword, the jewels embedded on the hilt glistened. His sword looked heavy and when he finally wielded his sword, Dana thought that a rapier would've been more reliable.
"If you go back on your words, I won't change my mind okay?"
Baam! Bam!
Each time the Emperor waved his arms, the sounds of bones being crushed were heard. The rebels couldn't even scream as they died where they stood.
"I won't…!"
It was an absolute victory.
The royal guards didn't help the Emperor, but stood in front of the n.o.bles who watched. They didn't do it to protect the n.o.bles, but rather to prevent them from intruding in the fight. The situation was completely handled by the Emperor as his power was overwhelming.
"I will skin them."
Dana felt she was the only one who knew that the Emperor literally meant the word skin. She felt a s.h.i.+ver as the n.o.bles cheered.
"All hail the Emperor!"
"Give me the skin!"
"You, you… Emperor! Did you think you would be safe for stealing a country without royal consent?"
"Aha, the Pinil royalty. The country of Hadosil was d.a.m.ned to not even know their enemies if you sprinkled them on top of their heads.
"You b.a.s.t.a.r.d! How dare you insult the Pinil royal family! I will cut your throat and take back my kingdom and crown!"
"I never took it away. Your people willingly gave it to me. If they want it back, I will give it to them, but not to the dried up Pinil royalty.
"Woah! I'll kill you!"
The loyal subjects of the Pinil royalty all rushed at him in one go, but the Emperor showed his dominance and killed them one by one. People started fleeing as the gore splattered everywhere… It was very messy. The guards fled to the audience, but the table was outside the safe range. Dana trembled as she saw scarlet covering the table.
"Ugh…!"
Dana found a place to retreat and stopped watching. It was a narrow s.p.a.ce beneath the table where no one would see her. But then she saw someone next to her that wasn't there before.
"What are you doing here…?"
