Chapter 3 Part 1- The so-called “self-written”

When Chen Minhao saw the somewhat exhausted Kang Hui stretching her body while bathing in the summer's sunlight, he got up on his feet as well, and said: “Sis Kang, I recently practiced a song. I hope that you can listen to it.”

Kang Hui frowned instinctively. She disliked artists that have too much idea of their own. However, she continued to patiently explained: “I have all the information of your scores from the day you entered the company till now. Every profession has their own masters; in terms of vocal, compared to my judgement, both me and the company trust the professional judgement of the vocal teachers more.”

She took a sip of water, and further elaborated: “In the entertainment industry, different job positions have their own separate roles and responsibilities. Presently, as an interviewer, I'm here to judge your soft skills. As for your job-specific skills, we will mainly make our judgment based on the a.s.sessment results of your performance in your past training. If I overstep my duties, and meddle with others' jobs, it will be disrespectful to your professional teachers, and they will not be happy about it.”

Chen Minhao looked at Kang Hui with deer-like eyes, and said: “Yes, yes. I know very well. Not only do agents and professional teachers have their respective job scopes, agents and artists have theirs as well. I know that Sis Kang is doing this for my own good, as after all, the professional teachers will get upset with me, and their overall impression of me will turn sour.”

The level of Chen Minhao's value reached a new height in Kang Hui's heart. She had always believed that both the agent and the artist must have a clear distinction of roles and responsibilities. Artists who have too much ideas of their own or love to interfere with the agent's job, are often times, a source of disasters.

Furthermore, though the young man in front of her looked demure, his IQ and EQ were in fact, surprising not low at all. He could comprehend the full picture with just a little explanation given to him. The feeling of casting a brick to attract jade made her experienced a long-lost contentment again.

She had been an agent for ten years, and knew all the unspoken rules of the entertainment industry. Looks is only an entrance ticket into the industry. Expending mountains of resources may perhaps make someone popular, but it's the talent or ability of the artist that is telling the upper limit of how popular they will be, and it's the IQ and EQ of the artist that are the true determining factor of how long the artist will remain popular. Hence, it is more effective and efficient to use the same amount of resources, and make someone who has a high IQ and EQ popular instead.

Feeling a little nervous, Chen Minhao added: “However, this is a song that I've self-written. The demo isn't out yet as I haven't mention this to Sis He. I just wanted sing it to you without any instrumental accompaniment. This is an add-on to my answer with regards to your question when you asked me what my advantages were.”

Kang Hui did not think much of it when she heard that it was a self-written song. But, she still gave a slight nod. After that, Chen Minhao begun to sing the ever-familiar song from his memory.

“This is a simple love song

Singing about the complications within our hearts

I think I'm very happy

when I can feel your warmth

The air around my feet swirls

This is a simple love song

And it is singing about the white doves that represent our souls

I think I'm well-suited to be an eulogist

Youth is floating in the air…”

Although, she only heard him sang with just his voice, and had yet to hear the demo, Kang Hui had made her judgement. If the marketing of this song isn't particularly bad, the song will definitely explode with popularity.

When she remembered that Chen Minhao was still a trainee currently, and that the contract he signed with the company was a fixed salary contract, and not a profit-sharing contract, the arc of the corner of her lips grew wider.

Chen Minhao had always loved the original version – 《Simple Love Song》by the band, Soda Green since his previous life. Not only was the song a must for him to sing whenever he went to the Karaoke, he had also sang it in his University's freshman welcoming party with a guitar as well. The response was pretty good too.

The language in 《Simple Love Song》isn't peculiarly ornate and flowing in eloquence; the melody isn't tortuous; the composition isn't complicated, and nor do the song have any gaudy gimmicks inside. The lyrics are clean and simple, straight to the point. The song lacks strong features, but at the same time carries a turbulent tide under the surface. It strikes at the softest and deepest part of one's heart, and easily resonate with people. The song itself is very suitable for singing with just the vocal alone.

The reason why he chose to sing with just his vocal, and not with a guitar like he did in the University's freshman welcoming party was because the original host did not know how to play a guitar. He was afraid that he would give his ident.i.ty as a transmigrator away. Although, he was feeling rather vexed that the original host did not know how to play any music instrument even though he was a trainee, there was nothing he could do. He was helpless with regards to it too!

Having studied law before, the scrupulous way of thinking that was brought forth by studying law was still influencing him to be cautious and alert. He would never do anything that is out of line. Protecting his ident.i.ty as a transmigrator was his top priority. He believed that the outcome of a transmigrator that gets discovered by any government in the world would probably be quite ugly.

Kang Hui was in shock internally, but she still tried to maintain an indifferent tone, and said: “Not bad. Is there only one song?”

From the moment he entered the door until now, the young man had given her quite a number of surprises. His performance had surpa.s.sed the mediocre evaluation that was given to him by He Tian, the person in charge of all the trainees.

Looks like He Tian's control of the trainees are still relatively weak. She needs more training. Kang Hui thought to herself.

Chen Minhao did not know that his performance had made He Tian lost out a large sum of her year-end bonus, and potential promotion. He hesitantly said, “Yes, I only completed this song so far.”

After reviewing the contract signed with Divine Dream by the original host last night, He was determined not to “write” anymore songs before the contract got changed unless it was a crucial moment. After all, there were only a fixed number of songs in his mind, every time he uses one, he would have one less song in his memory vault. Thus, he must ensure that the benefits are maximized whenever he uses one.
