The world was clear and blue.

Suns.h.i.+ne poked through the surface of the water, giving everything under this sea a light.

Fishes of all colors and shapes swam by. Some of them have stripes, while others just meld into the background, like moving shadows.

Below, on the floor of the sea are a random array of corals, reefs, and various underwater vegetation. On some parts of that sandy ground, you would be able to spot some starfish, lying there as if they are sunbathing.

SPLASH SPLASH SPLASH

Sounds of heavy objects falling through the sea surface could be heard.

"Ha... Ha... Ha..." As can the panting sound of a woman fleeing for her life.

This woman has long black hair, smooth light skin, and a tail in place of legs. She is not human, but instead, a member of the monster species called 'mermaids'.

Waves are continuously being generated under the water, as her tail kicks about, propelling her further and further away from the beings chasing after her.

Behind her are some black humanoid creatures.

She is sure that they are humans, but because they are dressed fully in black tights, with webbed gloves and shoes, they look like something other than human. Even their faces have strange masks on, masks with large round eyes and a strangely shaped snout. It makes them look more like hounds than humans.

Each ones of those black suited humans hold a harpoon in one hand.

They had started attacking her as soon as they had entered the water.

The mermaid felt scared.

She had spotted a large boat above the surface of the water before. Back then, she didn't think that would be a threat, but that was where these humans had jumped from.

There are a total of six of them.

"Catch her!"

"Kill her!"

They kept on saying these lines and nothing else. She tried to converse with them while she ran. She asked them to please stop chasing her. But that was to no avail.

Instead of answering her, they shot a harpoon at her.

Those harpoons cut through the water like lightning.

She was barely able to dodge the first one. It missed her and pa.s.sed by her side, before ultimately hitting a reef and stabbing a hole straight through it. Crack spread throughout that reef, before it fell apart.

The fear had only just gotten to her, when the second spear struck her on her back.

"Wah~!" The sound of a baby's cry came from nowhere, as a protective white light shone on her body. This protective light caused that frighteningly strong harpoon to hit a most solid of walls. It caused the harpoon to bounce back, while propelling her forward.

That sound just then felt very dear to her, but she didn't have time to think about what it was. She just continued fleeing.

The humans that failed in their attack, suddenly sprouted tails from their waists.

Although these tails are also fish tails, they are different from hers'.

Her tail is real, while theirs' look incorporeal. You can see through the scales and the flesh of their tails, and look into their bones.

Even so, they were still able to use those fake tails of theirs to chase after her, pursuing her like hungry sharks.

Their fake tails weren't able to make them move as fast as her. However, to make up for that, jets of water would shoot out from their backs in occasional bursts, allowing them to cover long distances in short times.

No matter how fast she swam, she could not prevent them from getting closer to her.

She soon found herself surrounded.

"Die!" They shouted.

Then, six harpoons shot at her at the same time. They came from six different directions. They moved too fast for her to dodge them all.

"Water s.h.i.+eld!" She yelled and spread her hands out at her sides. At the same time, she also tried to back away as much as she could.

Two whirlpools appeared where her hands reached out to, acting as two large s.h.i.+elds that completely covered her from two sides.

These s.h.i.+elds are very large, allowing them to block 2 harpoons each. When the harpoons. .h.i.t the water s.h.i.+elds, they instantly began to slow down. This didn't stop them from piercing through, but it allowed the waves inside the whirlpools to alter their trajectory, causing them to completely miss their target after they pa.s.sed through.

Unfortunately, there were still 2 more harpoons left.

One struck at her back, just below her neck. She felt the impact, but she didn't feel any pain. Instead, she heard that cry again.

"Wah~!" That sound that had appeared as a faint white light protected her. However, compared to before, the light was dimmer.

"Ahh!" She screamed. The last harpoon had broke through the white light and stabbed into her stomach.

It pierced right below her chest and above her abdomen, as it went through her flesh and out of her back.

She cough out blood. The red blood rose in the seawater as it drifted to the surface.

The harpoon didn't go completely through her.

Instead, the light of runes shone on the harpoon. Despite all its power and momentum, it stopped right after it had embedded into her.

The sharp tip of the harpoon suddenly sprouted spikes, stabbing into her back and lodging within her flesh.

She cried out in horrible pain. Tears swam in her eyes. An image of an illusory 'someone' appeared in her pupils, but she could not tell who it was.

"I... I don't want to..." She doesn't want to die.

The human who shot that harpoon cast a spell, causing the harpoon to shoot back to whence it came.

It dragged her unresponsive body toward that human.

She knew that if she were to be caught, she would without a doubt, die.

"Come to me, my Fooddd~" The expression of that human cannot be seen behind his black mask. However, from his voice which had a tone that combined l.u.s.t, gluttony, and avarice, all into one, it can easily be guessed how excited he must be.

More blood came out of the mermaid's mouth, as she was dragged through the water.

"Not until..." Now, she is only meters away from the hands of that evil human.

All of a sudden, her eyes let out a red light.

"Not until I see him again!!!" She loudly cried.

Her body which was stunned by the pain the lodged harpoon gave her, suddenly became energetic again.

She waved the five fingers of her right hand at the human that was pulling her towards him.

"Waterball!" She yelled. 5 b.a.l.l.s of crystal clear water shot out from her hand, shooting straight at the head of the black suited human.

The human was caught unaware, and was not able to put up a defense in time.

The waterb.a.l.l.s, as big as cannonb.a.l.l.s struck the human on his head, one after another. Each of them exploded upon impact.

A blood mist erupted, and when it was swept away by the waves, a headless corpse of a human dressed in black could be seen floating in the water. A blood mist rose up from the headless neck.

The mermaid fled away at that moment, the wound in her stomach leaving behind a thin trail of blood. If it weren't for the harpoon still being lodged in her, her blood loss would be more severe.

The remaining 5 black suited humans resumed chasing.

They clashed again and again, each time the black suits caught up.

Another harpoon stabbed through her right shoulder and lodged within, sending a wave of excruciating pain into her mind. But as if what her mind felt, and what her body thought, were two different things, her body still moved to counterattack.

b.a.l.l.s of water shot out in an endless stream, striking onto the offender's chest and blowing him into 4 separate pieces: a head, two arms, and everything below his chest. As for his chest? It had been shattered into smithereens.

Another harpoon came at her. It was as if these humans had an endless supply of them.

She raised her left hand and cast water s.h.i.+eld, but she wasn't able to make it in time. Compared to before, this human shot his harpoon at her from a much closer range.

The water s.h.i.+eld had only started forming when the harpoon stabbed into it.

The harpoon stabbed through the s.h.i.+eld and into her left hand. 3 out of the 5 fingers of her left hand were cut off by the head of the harpoon.

At this point, the white light was doing nothing more than weakening initial impact and distracting her from some of her pain. If it wasn't for that white light, with the force of that lightning-like harpoon, her little hand would have been shot through and completely destroyed.

A groan escaped from her lips, but her body didn't pause. Her tail began extending miraculously, reaching a length of tens of meters.

She swung it at the human from just now, smas.h.i.+ng him into a patch of corals.

The loud sound of a heavy crash echoed out, and a cloud of sand erupted at the bottom of the sea.

Judging from the faint movements of the shadowy silhouette within the sand cloud, the human didn't die. But it also looks like he is unable to get up.

She wanted to go finish him off, but she suddenly felt the waves churning threateningly.

When she looked over, she saw that one of the remaining 3 humans, had replaced his incorporeal fish tail with what looks to be transparent black octopus tentacles. They grew from the back of his waist and extended towards her, seeking to grab her.

She used the fins of her tail like blades, as she began to cut the tentacles apart as fast as she could.

The other two humans shot towards her with jets of water at their backs, seeking to directly end her with their harpoons.

At this moment in between life and death, she opened her mouth and shrieked. "DIEEE!!!"

Her voice was like a cornered siren's, shrill and piercing. As the sound waves pulsed through the seawater, they shattered the ears of all the humans present, stunning them in their places. The fishes were all startled. Waves rippled outwards. The light distorted under the sea.

Above the water surface, the flying fish that was hovering over the sea, fell back into the sea.

The tail swept, and more blood permeated the waters.

...

Eventually, the girl opened her eyes.

What she first saw with her hazy vision, was a familiar young man looking at her close by, with a gentle smile on his face.

"Welcome back, lovely." The young man said. His voice directly echoed in her mind.

Very, very weakly, she replied, "I'm back..."
