“Marry him, marry him…” Screams and whistles echoed throughout the hall.
Lin Meng looked at Gu Yubai, who held a ring as he knelt in front of her.
Marriage! Lin Meng had turned twenty years old this year and hadn't even thought about it.
She looked up from Gu Yubai's kneeling form. She stared at Ouyang Jun, who was standing right behind him, dressed in a dark suit. Lin Meng wanted to unravel the real emotion masked by the warm smile on his lips. His warm smile conveyed a silent encouragement. The realization made her heart sink.
“Why are you so stunned?” A friend of Gu Yubai's screamed from amidst the crowd. “Just nod!” Everyone burst into laughter. “Hurry! His legs must hurt from kneeling so long.”
Lin Meng panicked, it felt like her heart twitched with every pa.s.sing second. For fear of others noticing this, she reached out—almost s.n.a.t.c.hing the ring away from him. This awkward movement brought back the attention of the crowd towards her.
Gu Yubai stood up with an earth-shattering smile that reached his eyes. The look of pure joy on his face was a magnificent sight. The lucky man pried the engagement ring from her death grip before he slid it onto her ring finger.
“She can't wait to marry him!” A burst of boisterous laughter rang in her ears, causing her pale face to blush a deep shade of crimson.
She knew what would happen next as she looked down at the ring tightly wrapped around her finger. She couldn't restrain the tears as they poured out of her eyes and spilled down her jade cheeks in dark rivulets.
Lin Meng couldn't control the situation anymore.
“I will cherish you for as long as I live.” Gu Yubai reached out and wiped the bitter tears from her face. Amidst sounds of applause and blessings, he had made the most important promise of his life.
Ouyang Jun smiled and walked away from the crowd. A few years in the military had made him incapable of integrating into such a lively atmosphere. Or maybe it was because of something else… he didn't want to think about it. As long as she was happy, he would be fine.
He had taken time off just for her birthday. And with such happy moments coming her way, there was no reason for him to stay by her side.
When the clock on the wall hit twelve, the opposite room's door still had no movement. Ouyang Jun got a little uneasy at this and opened the door leading downstairs.
“w.a.n.g Shu, is Xiao Meng back?”
“Little Master, Miss has not returned yet,” the old butler said to Ouyang Jun.
“Not back yet.” It was already midnight, and Gu Yubai hadn't sent Xiao Meng back. He always sent her back before ten o'clock. Even if it was a special occasion like tonight, they should not have been this late.
“Young master, don't worry, it's Miss' 20th birthday. She will come back later. There should be nothing to worry about,” the butler said with a smile.
The young master had made a special trip for Miss Meng's birthday, so tonight he wanted Miss to come early. He should let the young couple have their s.p.a.ce, the old butler though.
“Hey, are you with Xiao Meng now?”
“I sent her back before eleven. Why? Hasn't she come back yet?” Gu Yubai asked. He had dropped her off at her front door. He wanted to spend more time with her, but she had refused, saying it was getting late. He could only watch her enter before leaving reluctantly.
“She hasn't come back,” Ouyang Jun said in a panic.
“Let's go look for her.”
“Yes.”
When he hung up the phone, Ouyang Jun was anxious. She had never done anything like this before.
It was late, where could she have gone?
He drove around the street for a while before he remembered. A special place came to mind.
Finally, he found her familiar figure at the beach they had visited often.
“Hey, I found her… No, it's okay, you don't have to come, we will go back soon… That's good. Bye.” Ouyang Jun ended the call and walked towards her.
“It's late. Why are you still out here?” He sat down beside her, his voice a little accusatory. “Didn't you think of how worried we would be?”
He knew the significance of this place. He would often bring her there when she was in a bad mood.
Why was she here?
