"Starved." Ariana groaned as she slumped into the sofa cus.h.i.+ons. "I'm guess there hasn't been any luck with them?" Mrs. Dabney asked as she placed Brie into Ariana's arms. "No." Ariana sighed before she kissed Brie's chubby little cheek. "Oh her eyes changed!" Ariana said as her lips moved away from Brie. "Yes. It was a nice surprise, since I wasn't expecting them to be multi-coloured hazel." Mrs. Dabney said as she grabbed a large container.
"What were you expecting them to be?" Ariana asked. "Blue or grey. You know the common eye colours." Mrs Dabney said with a small shrug. "Blue and grey are comon colours?" Ariana asked. "Well I guess for us they wouldn't be but here it is considered common. When the church made the announcement that they wanted blue eyed people and that the families would be given compensation money given for members.h.i.+p enrollment, people went crazy trying to match themselves up with partners who could produce said child." Mrs. Dabney explained.
"But they would have to wait practically a year before they knew if their child was what they were looking for though!" Ariana shouted in disbelief. "Exactly!" Mrs. Dabney shouted back as she pointed a spoon at Ariana. "I don't now what you learned in your past life but we had something similar happen in our world. Back in 1920's, most commonly known as the roaring 20's after the world war people were encouraged to produce families." Mrs. Dabney continued.
'Loralei?' Aroha called out and Ariana turned to see that Loralei was violently shaking, "Loralei, were you from Earth too?" Ariana asked as she slowly leaned to her. 'I-I-I-I." Loralei stuttered as she stared back at Ariana with tear filled eyes. Ariana sighed as she leaned back and hugged Brie. "I never learned about the roaring 20's." Ariana said as she looked back at Mrs. Dabney.
"W-well it wasn't really roaring. It was only called that to hide the truth that the world was heading for it's first great depression. Some even said it was the very cause of the drepression because of the president's radical choices but the same time we wouldn't have gotten the time efficiencies of the modern world." Mrs. Dabney said as she placed a large bowl of layered sour cream, salsa, grated cheese and green onions down oon the table. She then placed a bowl of corn chips.
"Oh I have been craving for corn chips." Ariana said as she got up and walked over. "So basicaly they called it the roaring 20's, well at least in the USA because of their lack of financial stability. No one cared that they were in debt, they all wanted to live their lives to the fullest, hence the roaring. It was after the World War one had ended. People were coming home, women had jobs and rights, immigration was on the rise but births were not."
"Women didn't not want to go back to their old lives or be oppressed any longer and house labour was disgusted. Women felt empowered, free and independent but a lot of their lovers, boyfriends and husbands still had power over them. The singles got married, the married got pressured to get pregnant and land in the suburbs were sold for dit cheap to promote family living. Machines started to come out to help house wives with their work so they could focus on getting pregant or taking care of their family and soon the biggest mistakes in history happened."
"The economy ruptured. Banks were going under, people were deep in their debts because of their excessive spending. Multiple children were born in a single family because of the propoganda and contests to see who could make the most children in a span of 5 years. Farmers had their lands foreclosed because of their expensions to to help with the war." Mrs. Daney expained as she absent-mindedly ate.
"They foreclosed farms? That's an odd thing to do." Ariana said as she furrowed her brows. "Why would they foreclose farms? Especially if they were helping with the war? You would think they would need farmers since they wanted to increase the population." Ariana continued to ask. "Let me ask you this instead. If we were to ever get in a war how would you feed all those soldiers? Who would the higher ups be looking at to supply the food?" Mrs. Dabney asked.
"Farmers." Ariana replied. "Right but the farmers only had a small plot of land that their family managed. So how would any farmer supply enough food for the army and to the populace at the same time. Food shortages would be everyones concern." Mrs. Dabney said as she waved a chip.
Ariana's eyes grew wide. "Here! It's like here! There isn't enough fertile land but the people here wouldn't dream of expanding would they? That would be ludacris! Would they even have the money to expand? Tools? Labourers to handle the new work load? I don't think they have come up with the concept of loans or credit cards here!" Ariana shouted scaring Brie. Her tiny lips started to tremble and Ariana's hair stood on end. "Sorry! No crying. Ahhh sweet angel. Shhh." She said in a hushed tone as she kissed and rubbed her face against Brie.
Brie touced Ariana's face and started to calm down. She then started to suck on Ariana's cheek and Ariana sighed a breath of relief. "Looks like someone's hungry." Mrs. Dabney laughed as she got up and waked to the fridge. "Roselyn, will there be war starting here?" Ariana asked in a small voice. "When I heard about the new horticultrial project I coud barely hold in my joy. Part of my job, both now and in the past was about research, understanding the past and were we went wrong so that the same mistakes wouldn't be made again."
"Vaccines, medications, hunger, ailments and human development when put under stress. Those are all signs someone like me would look for when coming up with a new drug. However we are getting off topic. Yes their mistake was taking out loans to expand, to get new tools and to get more hands without thinking about what would happen after the war." Mrs. Dabney said as she reached for Brie.
