“… what are you doing?”
At the time Amane Fujimiya and the girl – Mahiru s.h.i.+na – started to talk, it was raining heavily and she was sitting on a swing.
This year, the first year of high school, Amane lived alone, and an angel lived in the apartment room to the right of his.
“Angel” in this case was obviously a metaphor, but this metaphor was far from a joke, as Mahiru s.h.i.+na was a beautiful and sweet girl.
Her straight blonde hair was silky and l.u.s.trous, and her white skin never blemished and stayed smooth. The bridge of her nose was well-kept, and her eyelashes covered her large pupils nicely – her beauty was truly like the delicateness of a doll, something to be proud of.
She went to the same high school, and was even the same grade level as Amane, and as such he had often heard about her fame, but beautiful girls that did well both in school and sports were commonplace.
She was practically the top scorer on every test she took, and she seemed to do S-rank activities during PE.
Amane was in a different cla.s.s from her so he didn't exactly know the full story, but from the (probably true) rumors he'd heard, she seemed to be a flawless superhuman, or so he thought.
Her actual faults, if any, were unseen, she was beautiful and yet scored high, and even with that, with her humble and mature personality, it was no surprise that she was very popular.
This girl lived next door, and so this could drive some boys to the point of jealousy, desperately wanting her.
With that being said, Amane had no intention to interact with her or even get to know her.
Of course, Amane found the girl named Mahiru s.h.i.+na attractive.
However, the position they were in was merely as neighbours. And so, if he didn't have many chances to talk to her, there wouldn't be any intention to be involved with her.
If they were involved with each other, the jealousy of some boys might spike, and if they weren't on good terms with each other, even as neighbours, then other guys wouldn't need to worry.
Incidentally speaking, while attraction to the opposite s.e.x and romantic feelings are not always equal and intertwined, Amane did recognize when looking at Mahiru that he appreciated her beauty the most, like fine art.
With this reasoning, the expectation of a “bittersweet relations.h.i.+p” was hopeless and something he didn't get involved in, and even though they were neighbours they didn't contact each other much.
Due to this, to be frank, standing in rain, alone, without an umbrella, doing something, gives off the vibe of looking like a suspicious person.
Anyone who didn't need to stop by somewhere would rush back to their own homes once the rain comes to the point of hurrying, but the girl was alone in the park between the school and the apartment, sitting on a swing.
(what are you doing in the middle of the rain)
It was hard to see in the gloomy rain, but that conspicous blonde hair paired with the uniform immediately gave away that it was Mahiru.
Regardless, why she was standing there without an umbrella, getting wet, was unclear.
It seemed unlikely that she was waiting for someone, she didn't seem to mind getting wet and she wasn't looking anywhere in particular.
Her slightly upturned face, although originally fair, was now pale enough to look unwell, and that paleness could be seen.
If the situation was bad enough she could catch a cold in no time, and yet Mahiru stayed there silently.
Because she didn't try to leave, the person in question was probably there of her own choice. It might not be wise to interfere with her.
With that train of thought, Amane slipped past through the side of the park – the last thing he saw was Mahiru's distorted, crying face. Amane shook his head.
It wasn't like that. He unfortunately had no motive to interact with her.
However, seeing someone make such a pained face hurt his conscience. That was all.
“… what are you doing?”
There was no malice – he meant exactly what he said, and so he delivered it bluntly. The water swung off her heavy-looking hair, and she looked towards him.
Same as always, her face was beautiful.
Even in the pouring rain, there were no blemishes in her radiance, if anything, the rain was a prop that made her face stand out. A good girl in the dripping rain, that kind of thing.
Both eyes wide open, she looked towards him.
Mahiru recognized Amane, more or less, as a neighbour. Sometimes, they pa.s.sed by each other in the morning.
But to suddenly be talked to by someone who didn't usually keep in contact or a.s.sociate with her caused her dark brown eyes to betray a slight vigilance.
“Fujimiysan. What are you meaning to do with me?”
Having his last name be remembered like that brought about strange feelings inside him, but at the same time, the girl remained vigilant.
Of course, when being addressed by someone you've neither seen, known, or spoken to, it would be best to keep your guard up.
In the first place, she seemed to have gotten a lot of confessions and approaches and the like from multiple male students of various grade levels, so maybe she didn't want much involvement with the opposite s.e.x. She probably thought he had ulterior motives.
“It's not what you think, it's just that i saw you standing out here in the middle of the rain and I got curious, you know?”
“I see. Thanks for the concern, but I'm here because I want to be here. Don't worry about me.”
Her voice wasn't sharp and vigilant, rather, it was soft, but her feelings were not at all honest.
(well, alright then)
The obvious conclusion was that she didn't want to take part in the conversation, and so Amane didn't see any reason to probe further.
Originally, the conversation happened on a whim. These circ.u.mstances happened because he went with the flow, and so he decided to stop caring.
If she stayed here it wouldn't necessarily be a good thing.
Rather, if Mahiru said something, feelings would well up.
The ephemeral-looking beautiful face peeked at Amane in a suspicious-looking way, prompting an “I see” in return.
Talking here was certainly something he disliked, so he'd already decided to withdraw.
Fortunately, Mahiru didn't seem to harbour any ill thoughts about me not gettting involved, so he easily left her as she was and went home.
But, well, leaving the girl soaking and alone leaves one with a bad feeling.
“You'll catch a cold, go on home. It'd be good if you didn't do this again.”
And so, he meddled one last time.
If she got a cold, that would leave him with an uneasy conscience, he thought, so he held out the umbrella that had been covering his head until now.
She took the umbrella, and, pus.h.i.+ng it into her hands, before her lips moved, Amane turned his back and walked away.
As he quickly left, Mahiru spoke from behind.
But the sound of rain erased the quiet voice, and Amane pa.s.sed through the side of the park as if nothing happened.
Well, since she didn't catch a cold, and because to some extent he actively helped, the guilt that he initially ignored was slightly alleviated.
Amane had no intention to get involved, since she refused to talk.
He had nothing to do with it, and that much was clear.
Again, Amane, on the way back home, thought to himself.
At that time.
