Ning Tao thought Lin Qinghua's lab was in the office building he had visited, but Lin Qingyu drove him to a botanical garden in the suburbs.

The botanical garden belonged to Blueprint Biotechnology Company. The vast hillside was covered with a variety of common and uncommon herbs. There were also dozens of modern greenhouses with precious plants for scientific research.

Lin Qinghua's lab was in the botanical garden. It was a small composite building, with a lot of silver materials and blue toughened gla.s.s. It was a bit of science fiction.

The gate was a silver metal gate with a stainless steel plaque that said "Asking the Heaven Building" instead of "XX Lab".

Ning Tao stopped in front of the stainless steel plaque and asked curiously, "Asking the Heaven Building. Why does your brother's lab have such a strange name?"

"I used to also wonder why this lab had such a strange name, and I asked my brother about it, but he didn't tell me," Lin Qingyu replied. "I think it's just a name. What, do you think it has any special meaning?"

Ning Tao shook his head and said, "Maybe you're right. It's just a name. Show me inside."

Lin Qingyu came to the silver metal gate, opened the door with her magnetic card, and then led Ning Tao inside.

Behind the door was a pa.s.sageway flanked by several surveillance cameras, with work lights on.

"n.o.body here?" Ning Tao inquired.

"There should be someone during the day, and now there should be only security personnel," Lin Qingyu replied. "Maybe they are asleep. Don't mind them. I'll take you straight in."

Ning Tao then followed Lin Qingyu through the pa.s.sageway and into the experimental zone. There were a lot of computers, instruments and utensils in this experimental zone, making it a little crowded.

At the end of the experimental zone was a door, which was closed, and thus the s.p.a.ce behind the door was invisible.

As soon as Lin Qingyu and Ning Tao came here, all the lights in the experimental zone, which had only the safety indicator light on, suddenly turned on. An old man in a security uniform with a rubber baton came out of a small door and shouted, "Who is it?"

Lin Qingyu responded, "It's me, Lin Qingyu."

The old man took a few steps toward them, as if to confirm Lin Qingyu's ident.i.ty.

Ning Tao's eyes fell on the old man. The old man was about 60 years old, with a horse face, walking lightly and looking thin and very healthy.

After a few steps, the old man stopped and said, "It's really Miss Lin. It's so late. Why are you here? Did you leave something here?"

"I just came here to have a look. Never you mind," Lin Qingyu answered.

"Is he your friend?" The old man asked again.

"Yes," Lin Qingyu answered.

"Then I'll go somewhere else," said the old man, and turned away.

Ning Tao leaned over to Lin Qingyu and whispered, "Do you know this old man?"

"No," Lin Qingyu answered. "I've only been here a few times. Maybe we've met before, but I don't remember." After a pause, she asked, "Why do you ask?"

"Don't you think he said a bit too much as a security guard?" Ning Tao said. "And he didn't talk to you like a security guard talks to a boss."

Lin Qingyu's eyes immediately turned to the old man's back.

At this point, the old man looked back, then turned around, and walked on.

Somehow Ning Tao sensed something sinister in the way the old man just looked back at them. With a move of his mind, his eyes and nose entered into the state of looking and smelling.

The smell of the old man was as colorful as ordinary people, and his smell was normal, and even mixed with a little wine, which obviously showed that he drank a little wine.

"I think he's normal." Lin Qingyu voiced her own judgment.

"Maybe I'm paranoid," Ning Tao said, taking his eyes off the old man's back.

Lin Qingyu smiled and said, "You are so young, but you know, sometimes you give me a feeling that I you're a fathomless man."

"Really?" Ning Tao asked casually. "What do you mean?"

Lin Qingyu thought for a moment before answering. "Maybe it's because of your medical skills and personality. Well, let's stop this subject. Can you tell anything?"

Ning Tao looked around, shook his head, and said, "As a medical student, I'm a layman in biological research. I haven't seen anything wrong. Why don't you take me to your brother's office?"

"It's over there. Come with me." Lin Qingyu headed for the door at the end of the experimental zone.

Ning Tao followed Lin Qingyu to the door.

Lin Qingyu entered the pa.s.sword on the cipher device on the door, and the door opened to both sides.

Behind the door was a domed, windowless s.p.a.ce containing more sophisticated laboratory equipment, computers and several filing cabinets housing an astonis.h.i.+ng amount of paper doc.u.ments, file bags and books.

"Lin Qingyu said that she came here after Lin Qinghua got ill, but she never found any materials or records related to ancestor seeking, which means that relevant things have been cleared away," Ning Tao a.n.a.lyzed secretly in his heart. "Even if I look through all the data and hard drives here, I probably won't find anything useful. So where should I start? Jiang Hao, Jiang Hao, since you asked me for help, why didn't you give me some hints? I'm at a loss. I don't even have a clue."

As he worried, his eyes suddenly stopped on the frontal curving wall.

On the wall was a hand-painted painting of a burning sunset, a black mountain, and a man walking towards the sunset. He was dressed in bluish, who stood out in this painting.

There was a pa.s.sage on the painting, reading, "Everyone thinks our future is tomorrow and our path is forward, but they are wrong. The way ahead is death and destruction, so I have to go back. I want to find the source and the answer of all this."

This was a strange pa.s.sage. Ning Tao read it twice.

"I painted it as a birthday present for my brother," Lin Qingyu explained, a smile creeping into her lips.

"Did you write the words on the painting, too?" Ning Tao asked.

"No, my brother wrote it," Lin Qingyu answered. "What do you think of it? Don't you think we are like postmodern literary youth?"

Ning Tao went to the painting. He didn't sense the feeling of postmodern literary youth, but thought of Lady Yang who Lin Qinghua missed badly.

The sentence— "The way ahead is death and destruction"— sounded desperate, but it was true. People kept moving forward after they were born, and would be eventually dead no matter how struggling. So Lin Qinghua was going to go back, and look for the source and the answer.

But what did "all this" mean?

In addition, he imagined himself to be Emperor Xuanzong of Tang who could not forget Lady Yang for a long time, and even had the deep affection for her. Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and Lady Yang both lived more than 1,000 years ago. Was he already on his way back?

Ning Tao could not figure that out.

Suddenly, he picked up the mysterious, familiar odor— the smell of the bluish "clay"! The discovery thrilled him and he quickened his pace.

"What do you think of my painting?" Lin Qingyu's voice came from behind.

Ning Tao paused beside the painting and replied, "Great, I think. When did you paint it? I don't find the date."

"It was painted a year ago," Lin Qingyu answered. "I gave it to my brother for his 30th birthday. But it was his idea. I just drew it." With a pause, she seemed to think of something. "That's the day I heard about ancestor seeking from him. I never thought he would get such a strange disease at that time. Doctor Ning, please cure my brother."

Ning Tao nodded and reached for the painting on the wall.

Lin Qingyu did not stop him.

Ning Tao's hand touched the bluish figure in the painting, and he felt that he was not touching the canvas. He gently felt the bluish figure again and again.

"Doctor Ning, is there anything wrong with this painting?" Ning Tao's strange behavior aroused Lin Qingyu's curiosity. She also came to the wall and stood beside Ning Tao, watching him touch her "brother" in the painting.

Suddenly, Ning Tao jabbed the canvas with his right fingers!

Crackle!

The canvas cracked and Ning Tao's fingers plunged into it, instantly destroying the intact painting.

"What are you doing?" Lin Qingyu exclaimed.

Ning Tao pulled his hand away from the painting, still holding a piece of canvas he tore off.

"How... how could you? It's a birthday present for my brother. It means a lot to my brother and me!" Lin Qingyu was so angry that her voice trembled a little.

Ning Tao reached his right hand to Lin Qingyu and then spread it out. In his hand lay a lump of egg-sized bluish "clay".

"It..." Lin Qingyu's anger came and went quickly. "What is it?" She cried.

"I don't know," Ning Tao responded, "but I'm sure it's related to your brother's illness."

"Let me have a look," Lin Qingyu said and reached for it.

Ning Tao pushed her hand away. "You'd better not touch it. Think about your brother. Do you want to be like him?"

Lin Qingyu then withdrew her hand.

Ning Tao hurried to Lin Qinghua's desk, then found a paper knife and carefully cut the bluish "clay". There was a capsule hidden inside.

"Is this the product of Lin Qinghua's ancestor seeking? Was this kind of little pill that turned him into a new demon?" Ning Tao secretly guessed.

Ning Tao held the capsule in his hand and examined it carefully. When he turned it over, he saw a bluish symbol at the bottom, which looked like a little figure that a primitive man drew in the cave.

The little bluish figure seemed to have become the exclusive symbol of Lin Qinghua, a "new demon".

"What did you find?" Lin Qingyu leaned over to see that her face was almost touching Ning Tao's.

Suddenly, all the lights went out and the building was in pitch darkness.
