I bucked up. "Yeah, I'm fine. Everything's fine. Lots to tell you, though. Are you free for dinner? I promised Cisco a steak."
"Sure. Where do you know that takes dogs?"
"How about my place?"
"I thought you didn't cook."
I opened the car door and slid in. Cisco swiped a happy tongue across my face."I don't. But you do."
There was a short silence. "I guess I'm bringing the steaks, too?"
"Right. I've had a kind of tough day."
In a moment I heard him chuckle. "I'll see you at seven."
"Bye, Miles." I hung up the phone and started the engine.
