Realizing they were at the coat check, and yeah, a place this exclusive would have a coat check, she gave the girl behind the counter her outerwear, while Janvier took off his jacket, having left his sweater and scarf in the car. She hadn't worn any visible weapons out of politeness to being in Ellie's home, though she was certain Ellie wouldn't have cared, but that meant there were no awkward questions.
Not that the coat check girl-all breathy words and wet lips-even noticed Ashwini except as an annoyance in her attempt to seduce an amused Janvier. "So used to women throwing themselves at you that you take it in stride?" she murmured after they moved back into the corridor, using the chance to undo a couple of extra b.u.t.tons on her s.h.i.+rt to better fit the vibe.
Janvier, somehow managing to make a simple white T-s.h.i.+rt look incredibly s.e.xy, his hair just-got-out-of-bed disheveled, shrugged. "It is a burden, cher, but one I bear." His eyes lingered on the skin revealed at her neck, his voice rough when he next spoke. "You are dressed like an invitation."
"Janvier, I'm wearing more clothes than all the 'fresh meat' put together."
Leaning in close to her ear, his breath warm, he slipped an arm around her waist, his hand possessive on her hip. "It makes men want to unwrap you, be the only one to see what's inside." He tugged out the chain that held the pendant, knuckles rubbing across her breastbone. "It sits right between your b.r.e.a.s.t.s," he said on a hoa.r.s.e groan before tucking it back inside the s.h.i.+rt. "I don't want any other male thinking about that but me."
Her nipples were suddenly painfully tight, her panties damp. Primal instinct told her to slip out of his hold if she had any hope of salvaging her s.h.i.+elds. She didn't. It was too late for that. It was also the right decision to ensure justice for their victim. Because this was a vampire club and Janvier was a known commodity.
So was she, but not always in the best way. She'd already seen one vamp she'd hauled home to his angel. It had been three years ago, but vampires tended to have long memories about things like that.
Bracing her arm on Janvier's shoulder, elbow bent, she took in the dance floor. It was bathed in pulsing light several shades too dark to be truly comfortable for mortal eyes, but that was perfect for the older vampires. The view was otherwise relatively ordinary. Taut and toned women and pretty men danced limber and s.e.xy in an effort to attract the attention of the bored-looking but physically stunning vampires who occasionally culled one from the herd.
She tapped her foot absently to the beat. Dancing had been in her blood as long as she could remember, but she hadn't indulged in it anywhere but inside her apartment for a long time. That wouldn't be changing in this club. Because while the dance floor was normal enough, what was above it wasn't.
The mezzanine level was basically a large wraparound balcony that looked out over the dance floor. Tables and seating arrangements were laid out in intimate groupings on that level, the stairs up to the mezzanine guarded by bouncers who, again, let up only the chosen.
In club terms, it was nothing to write home about.
However, suspended just below the mezzanine by what looked like steel cables on each of the four corners, was a sheet of transparent gla.s.s. Gla.s.s walls about two feet in height grew up from the large flat sheet on all four sides, creating a shallow box with no top. In the gla.s.s box was a live show.
Right now, from what she could tell, two male vampires dressed in full-on lace and leather, their s.h.i.+rts froths of white and their black leather pants so tight they appeared painted on, were feeding from a ripped mortal who was either naked or wearing a G-string. Then the two vamps threw the mortal to the gla.s.s on his front and she didn't have to guess anymore.
She could see every inch of him, including the turgid red of his erection.
One of the vampires, his hair sleek and blond, lay down on his side beside the donor, pulling up the donor's head by the hair to kiss him long and deep. When he released the breathless male from the kiss, it was to a raven-haired female vamp who'd stepped into the box. She took over the kiss, while the second male vamp watched.
Words were spoken that made the woman smile, her poison red nails on the donor's throat. Then the blond vampire stroked long white fingers down the man's back . . . and shoved him down on his distended c.o.c.k right as the second male vampire sank his fangs into the donor's thigh. The woman went for his throat at the same instant.
The donor screamed, drops of blood splattering the gla.s.s, but Ashwini saw no terror on his face, only a naked s.e.xual ecstasy.
She looked away before she ended up witnessing him spurt his s.e.m.e.n against the gla.s.s. Not that she was sure the show would stop there. Nakedness wasn't required for feeding, so the donor had probably volunteered for public s.e.x or pain or both. It wasn't her idea of a good time, but she wasn't about to judge as long as it was all consensual.
"Well," she murmured to Janvier, s.h.i.+fting her hand to play with the hair at his nape, "do you come here often?" It didn't seem his kind of thing, but maybe he had a kink she didn't know about.
He ran his hand up and down her hip. "Only so I can maintain my contacts." His lips brushed her ear as he spoke, the music too loud to permit anything else. "For me, feeding from a partner is a private thing. As is f.u.c.king." He nipped her ear with sharp teeth, the contact sending a jolt straight to the heat between her legs. "Not for public exhibition, but to be savored in hushed intimacy."
Her body was so primed, she barely resisted the urge to shove him into a dark corner and ride him to oblivion. "I'm going to the ladies'." It was the best place to find mortals in between dancing or donating, especially if she wanted to have an actual conversation.
Janvier's hand slipped low enough that he was now officially-and very possessively-cupping her a.s.s. "I'll make sure the bouncers know to let you upstairs if we get separated. No one should bother you here, but if anyone does, feel free to fillet him or her."
"I don't need your permission for the filleting," she said, then leaned forward to bite him on the jaw.
He jerked, hand clenching convulsively.
"There"-pounding heart, shallow breath-"now no one will bother you, either, not unless they want to get filleted."
Walking away to the sight of his growing and hotly s.e.xy smile, she felt her skin flush. What had started out as a lighthearted dig at his increasing possessiveness had instead betrayed her own. Annoyed with herself for her inability to stick to her guns until she'd told him everything, she snarled at a vamp who went to make a move on her.
His eyes gleamed, but she'd already pulled a blade and had it at his crotch. "I'm no donor."
He became erect between one heartbeat and the next. "I know. I wouldn't feed without permission, mistress. Please, hurt me. Please."
"Oh, for Christ's sake." She'd apparently managed to find the one vamp in this place who wanted to be prey rather than predator. "Since you asked so sweetly," she said and slashed the blade across his thigh, careful not to do anything but p.r.i.c.k him. His eyes rolled back in his head.
Leaving him shuddering in ecstasy, she pushed open the door to the ladies' room. It was as luxurious and cla.s.sy as she'd expected. In front of her was a large area with mirrors on every wall and curved seating in plush red. Several women sat on the backless red couches, touching up their makeup, talking to friends, or, in one case, snorting c.o.ke. Apparently being fresh meat wasn't enough; this one wanted to be hopped-up fresh meat.
Going through the second door, to the section with the actual stalls, she went in one, flus.h.i.+ng it after a reasonable pause before getting out and was.h.i.+ng her hands, all to maintain the fiction that she was just another mortal on a night out with her vampire lover. It was unlikely any of the humans would recognize her as a hunter, and even if they did, there was no law that said hunters couldn't date vamps.
"d.a.m.n," she muttered after returning to the seating area, making a show of digging into her pockets beside a gorgeous, plump brunette who was fluffing up her hair.
"You lose your ID?" the brunette asked with a sweetness that made Ashwini want to bundle her up and get her out of there ASAP.
"No, forgot my lipstick."
Her new friend opened her glittery gold clutch and took out a tube. "You can borrow mine. Just wipe it off with a tissue and use your finger." An a.s.sessing look. "I think the color would suit."
"Oh, thanks." She took a seat beside the girl . . . and noticed the bite mark on her neck. Two tiny circles, along with a nicely developing bruise. "You already donated tonight," she said with a smile, while taking a tissue from the dispenser.
"Oh, I'm with Rupert." The woman sighed, hazel eyes dreamy. "He's so nice to me. Look." She wiggled her fingers to draw attention to the large rock on her index finger.
Well, at least she had protection. "That's some ring." Ashwini took the hand, examined the jewelry. "He must really be into you."
"He is." A bright smile. "Just like that vamp you came in with is into you." The brunette waved a hand in front of her face. "G.o.d, talk about cute."
Ashwini didn't think Janvier was cute-he was too s.e.xy to be cute-but she went with it. "Yeah, he's not bad," she said with a grin that implied all sorts of things.
The other woman squeaked. "Oh, that's so hot. Rupert and I haven't, you know, because he's old-fas.h.i.+oned, but I'm hoping tonight . . ."
Ashwini decided she might like this vampire named Rupert. "That's nice," she said. "That he cares enough about you to wait."
"He really does."
Having stroked on the lipstick with her finger, she wiped the tube again and gave it back. "Thanks."
"You're welcome."
"Are you guys regulars here?"
"We come once or twice a week," the girl said, putting her things into her clutch. "Did you want to meet up? We can exchange numbers. I'm Lacey, by the way."
"Ash." She took Lacey's number because contacts were contacts-and because she liked the sweet brunette. "I'll call you if we come back this way, but I was wondering if you knew another donor."
"Oh, who?"
Ashwini decided against flas.h.i.+ng the image she'd sent to her own phone from Janvier's during the drive. It was obviously not of a living person and this investigation was all about subtlety. "I'm asking for a friend who's a vamp. They had the one-night thing, you know."
Lacey's face set into lines of disapproval that would've done an eighteenth-century schoolteacher proud. "So many girls do that, but I'm a relations.h.i.+p girl. No spreading myself around. I even told Rupert that the first time we met, that if he was just after a quick s.e.x feed, he could find another girl." Her cheeks dimpled. "But my Rupert's a gentleman."
Ashwini hid an inward smile. It was becoming clear Lacey and Rupert were a perfect match. "Well," she said, hoping these two would make it, "my friend never got her name, but she had a tattoo like this on her ankle."
She showed Lacey the picture of the tattoo, having had the Guild techs work with it so it now appeared to be an image she'd downloaded off the Internet. Easier than trying to explain why her "friend" would have a photo of the girl's tattoo but not her face. "Have you seen it before?"
Lacey frowned, shook her head. "But you should ask Flynn. He knows everyone, I swear." Getting up, she said, "Come on, I'll introduce you."
"Thanks." She followed the brunette out the door, keeping an eye open for Janvier.
Her Cajun wasn't on the first floor. When she headed upstairs with Lacey, it was to see him sprawled in one of the groupings of sofas on the mezzanine, talking to a vampire with yards of red hair and skin like cream, her body poured into a black evening gown with plunging cleavage. Sitting in the center of her impressive b.r.e.a.s.t.s was a diamond that glittered even in the soft light up here.
But that wasn't what held Ashwini's attention. It was the fact that the redhead had her lips to Janvier's ear, her hand stroking his thigh, and his arm around her shoulders.
21.
"There he is. Flynn!" Lacey called out to a square-jawed black man who immediately headed over to them. Dressed in jeans and an untucked white s.h.i.+rt, the sleeves rolled up to show off strong forearms, a heavy watch his only decoration, he didn't fit the hedonistic atmosphere of Masque except for the fact that he had the looks of a movie star or a model.
He and Lacey squeezed one another like best friends.
"This is my friend Ash," Lacey said when they broke apart, her face open. "She's with that super cute vampire who's sitting with Adele."
Neck p.r.i.c.kling at the feel of Janvier's eyes on her though she had her back to him, Ashwini couldn't avoid Flynn's hug. The man's cheek touched hers as he held on tight and the contact made her ability come to life, as it did without warning at times even with people so young. But the resulting slap of knowledge wasn't anything she couldn't handle. Vivid and strong and with a hint of darkness, Flynn was more dangerous than Lacey, but that was a matter of degrees. A puppy would be more dangerous than Lacey.
"Ash is looking for a donor who hooked up with a friend of hers," Lacey said with a pursing of her lips. "Do you know a girl with a tat like this? Ash, show him the photo."
Flynn looked at the picture for almost a half minute, a small frown line between his eyebrows. "I'm sure I've seen her, but not here. She's more low-key." He handed back Ashwini's phone. "I think she used to go to Hinge, but that was a while ago. I haven't been there for a year."
"Of course not." Lacey hooked her arm through his, her dimples peeking out. "As if Ko would let you go there." Her eyes grew huge the next second, her gaze focused past Ashwini's shoulder.
She didn't need to turn to know Janvier was behind her. "Cher"-he slid his arm around her waist-"introduce me to your beautiful friends."
Lacey giggled, blushed prettily, while Flynn's handshake was friendly.
"Ah, Rupert," Janvier said when Lacey told him the name of her vampire. "He is a good man. Try not to take advantage of him."
"Oh, I would never." Lacey dimpled again, adorably smitten. "Do you know Ko as well?"
"Benita Ko?"
Flynn nodded.
"Yes, I know Benita. Tell her Janvier said h.e.l.lo." He squeezed Ash's hip. "I feel restless tonight, sugar. Let us walk outside, find another bar."
Ashwini said good-bye to Lacey and Flynn, both of whom gave her a thumbs-up when Janvier momentarily glanced away. "You didn't say Ko was a good woman," she said once they were outside, winter gear back on.
"Ko is a s.a.d.i.s.t," Janvier murmured. "But as Flynn's breath caught when I applied too much pressure on his hand, enough to cause a tiny bit of pain, it appears he must be a m.a.s.o.c.h.i.s.t. Therefore, the two are a perfect match."
Ashwini realized he was talking about sadism in the s.e.xual context, rather than in relation to Ko's personality. Or maybe it was both, since he clearly wasn't judgmental about the lifestyle itself. "Is she a s.a.d.i.s.t out of the bedroom, too?"
"Yes, she can be ugly." A shrug. "But she only ever has one donor at a time and treats each well. How long did the boy say he'd been with her?"
"A year-implied."
"So, she's unlikely to be the one we search for, but I'll do a little digging, see if her tastes have altered."
"Why do immortals fixate on s.e.x and pain? It's sad they don't seem to see everything else life has to offer."
"My darling Ashblade, your view is skewed. You see the Made who patronize such places because that is where your work takes you."
"Vamps in suburbia?"
"Complete with minivans and white picket fences."
"Flynn," she said, putting the conversation back on track, "thought our victim may have gone to Hinge at some stage in the past."
"Adele, who keeps an eye on everything in her establishment, is certain the girl wasn't a regular, so Hinge it is."
"You seem friendly with her," Ashwini said before she could stop herself. Turned out that while naive Marie May hadn't set off her jealousy, the gorgeous, experienced Adele had turned the dial to blazing red.
"I am. She is a lush and sensual creature, Adele," Janvier said, his lips curving as if he spoke from personal, intimate experience.
"If you go for overblown and obvious." G.o.d, she needed to staple her mouth shut.
Open delight in his expression. "I've told you, I go for the unique and the dangerous."
Realizing he'd been provoking her on purpose, she elbowed him.
He touched his fingers to her nape, curled his hand gently around it when she didn't push him away. "Your body was thrumming with the music the entire time we were in the club. Shall we dance tonight?"
"Let's see what we discover first." Dancing with Janvier wouldn't be like dancing by herself or with any other man. Dancing with Janvier would be a prelude to s.e.x. He'd touch and stroke, whisper things in her ear as he flirted with his body and his mind both. With her resolve already on increasingly shaky ground, Ashwini had no confidence in her ability to withstand him.
He linked his fingers to her own. Stubborn Cajun. This time, however, she didn't shake him off. When he shot her a smirking grin, she gave him a dark look. "Don't get too full of yourself."
Lifting her hand to his mouth, he pressed a kiss to her knuckles, the contact lips to skin since she'd forgotten her gloves tonight. "Did you dance as a child?" At her nod, he said, "What kind of a dancer were you?"
"Ballet."
He halted on the road. "Dit mon la verite'!"
She gave in to her laugh, he looked so comically stunned. "It is the truth. My mother took me to my first cla.s.s when I was three. I think it was meant to give me an extracurricular activity to put on college applications later on, but I adored it."
