Chapter 5: Hospital

Official work starts on Children’s Day. It’s an unlucky morning as heavy rain pours down; holding an umbrella and walking down the spa.r.s.ely inhabited Blue Floral Street, the small parasol concealed her face. She just wanted to leave as soon as possible. All the way North, as she pa.s.ses Ling Tian community’s main entrance, a speeding Bentley car emerges from behind her, throwing up large waves of water all over her dress. Her whole back was drenched with water, and she almost screamed at the driver but was too late as she could only watch the car speed off.

She stared the Mercedes Bentley, wrote down the license plate number, 88888. This number is too easy to remember, if a car accident were to occur, with one glance you’ll be able to recall it. But upon recalling the auspicious numbers, the car must’ve been purchased at an extremely high price. Yisheng glanced at the community, it was indeed a luxurious area.

“Beep…” Yisheng was about to continue onwards, although she stopped behind an Audi Q7 when it honked at her. Yisheng turned to look at the driver, and saw Yan Heng reveal a row of white teeth, showing her a radiant smile, “Beautiful, do you want a ride? ”

Yisheng laughed, her depressed mood from the water incident earlier, evaporating into mist. She naturally enters the car, smiled and said: “Senior, what a coincidence.”

Turning the car towards the hospital, Yan Heng drops a question while on the way there, “Did you eat breakfast yet? ”

Yisheng was in a daze, “No I haven’t,” she has never naturally woken up before nine o’clock. Even on her first day of work, she needed an alarm clock to wake her up. She lingered in bed until 7:30 before getting up, naturally she didn’t have time to cook breakfast. It was rainy today, thus buying breakfast was avoided. In fact, Yisheng was accustomed to the lifestyle of being hungry from one meal to the next.

“I know,” Yan Heng readily took out a box filled with a carton of milk and two soft-boiled eggs from the car, “Both are nutritious and light, it should fill you up.”

Yisheng, dazed and a little startled, hesitated to take the breakfast from his hands. She forces a smile: “Senior is still very thoughtful of others.”

“I’m not as thoughtful as you think I am, you’re just an exception” Yan Heng’s eyes were serious, albeit his light tone.

Yisheng peeled the eggs carefully, thinking of how good her senior has always been towards her. He has never missed a chance to take care of her, and she, not in the least, took his kind actions for granted. She ate the eggs and drank the milk, but wasn’t able to finish when they finally arrived at the hospital.

Yan Heng turned off the car ignition, quietly sitting on the seat as he waited for her to finish. Yisheng, seeing her Senior waiting for her, hastily consumed the egg, then immediately swallowed the second egg in one bite. Yan Heng stared at her ink black eyes, then her bulging cheeks, and was left dumbfounded. He didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

“Senior, quickly!” Looking at her watch, it was almost 45, another 15 minutes and she’ll be late. She hastily got off the car, meanwhile Yan Heng was still sitting, his eyes staring at Yisheng’s skirt. He thought that Yisheng’s back seemed like a yellow wet cake, and could not help but laugh.

Yisheng met Yan Heng’s gaze, and knocked on the car’s window, “Senior, I’ll go in to report first, you hurry up too.” Having said that, she immediately ran to the hospital. Yan Heng helplessly stroked his forehead, thinking of how humorous she is. His Junior Sister truly is simple-minded.

The hospital’s new main building had a total of 27 floors. As Yisheng searched for the Head Nurse in the 16th floor, held tightly in her hand was her nurse’s report card. The Head Nurse was in her forties, a plump woman wearing red lipstick with notable features, and bearing a demeanor that seemed a bit harsh. The Head Nurse read her report card, and then curiously gave her a head-to-toe.

Her stern face suddenly softens into a smile, “Ye Yisheng?”

“Yes.” Yisheng said, puzzled. The Head Nurse chuckled: “Which clinic do you want to go to?”

“Ah?” Yisheng, baffled, was even more confused. She could choose her own section? The Head Nurse quickly explained: “You can go to whichever department is shorthanded.”

So that’s it. Yisheng nodded, understanding, then selected what she wanted, “I want to go into surgery.”

“I knew it.”

Yisheng looked at the Head Nurse, befuddled by her response, and thinking of how she said the wrong thing again, she explained once again, “Surgery is good, surgical is good.”

The Head Nurse then said: “You’ll go into the Oncology Department. ”

“Good.” Yisheng gave her thanks and got into her department’s nurse uniform, instantly starting her first day of work.

B City’s affiliated hospital in the sub-provincial city is the most prestigious and renowned of the whole province. Generally, any doctor in surgical Oncology are said to be elites. Even the nurses were held to a high standard. Yisheng’s colleagues had at least a master’s degree, furthermore, they all were quite good looking. And according to her new colleague, Zhao Jixiang, the department had two branches: first was the elites, and the second was someone within the family.

Zhao Jixiang was one extremely lively little nurse, somewhat on the mischievous side, and graduated with an accelerated medical degree, she bluntly told Yisheng that she went through the back door to get into the Oncology Department. One of her mother’s relatives is the Deputy Director of the hospital, and spent a lot of money to get in.

Yisheng acknowledged this. In today’s society, money and connections are important. Regarding how she got into the Oncology Department, she also knew a thing or two. She is not so naïve as to think that she’s an elite. Although she has a master’s degree and her university had a bit of fame. However, her performance on the other hand, wasn’t too good, her being an elite was out of the question. She could also guess from the Head Nurse’s expressions.

Also her Senior is a golden turtle, driving an expensive car, what is his ident.i.ty? She can not help but to have a “jack of all trades,” wanting to ask Zhao Jixiang, but the results were unthinkable…

Zhao Jixiang blinked three times, “Do you know this doctor?”

Yisheng: “He’s my Elder Brother.”

Zhao Jixiang, dragged her out and hid in a corner to talk “My G.o.d, are you sure Yan Heng of our hospital is your Elder Brother?”

“Yes.” Yisheng gave a determined look.

“Amen!” Zhao Jixiang faced towards the mural cross, her hands clasped together, with a reverent look, “Allah ah, how could you treat us weak little sheeps like this?”

Yisheng was baffled! Zhao Jixiang, energetically held her hands towards her chest, “Ye Yisheng.”

“What?”

“Do you know what your Senior’s character is in this hospital?” Zhao Jixiang looked towards the heavens with a tearful mien.

“I don’t know.”

“You know that our hospital belongs to the tertiary hospital, right? In General, a surgeon his age is practically impossible, but this talented doctor isn’t only a great surgeon, his level is considered to be absolutely first-cla.s.s. A miracle!”

Her Senior was truly inhuman. In college, he partic.i.p.ated in several medical studies and won many awards.

Zhao Jixiang suddenly in high spirits, began to talk again, “Our hospital has always been part of the elites, known for its best three: great doctors, amiable atmosphere, and the female nurses. Of course we rush, but unfortunately during work, there’s no time to chat, and no one dares to act rashly.” Having said that, Zhao Jixiang turns depressed all of a sudden.

Yisheng could not help but inwardly throw up, knowing that her Elder Brother had so many suitors. Zhao Jixiang’s expression turns into one with joy, and she glances at her thoughtfully. Yisheng then asked: “Do you want me to help you with matchmaking?”

“What?” Zhao Jixiang was shocked, “I’ll back out, there’s a pile of female wolves in the post. Me, daring to covet? You don’t know how viscous the nurses are in Oncology, they could tear you to pieces. Which means you’d better stay away from your Senior. Don’t let the gang of female wolves know about this.”

Yisheng suddenly realizes her dire situation after hearing Zhao Jixiang’s reminder. She did not want to become the target of public criticism. She just wanted to work honestly, far away from trouble. But she’s in Oncology. Yan Heng is in Oncology… they are bound to meet, ah!

She felt nothing but resentment, and began to worry. She did not like trouble at all, and wanted to avoid it as much as possible. They were both still hiding in the dark when Yisheng’s phone rang. She took a peek at the message, it was her evil senior.

Opening the SMS, it read: “It’s time for dinner, Junior Sister, let’s eat together.”

Ignoring the message, she immediately returns the phone in her pocket, then turned to Zhao Jixiang with a calm look on her face. “It’s dinner time, shall we go eat?”

“All right.” Zhao Jixiang stood up, smiling faintly.

The hospital had a large dining room, used only for the staff and the patient’s family. Of course, the staff had a specific area to eat, known as Area C. Here you can order small dishes to eat alone for dinner, but the prices were slightly expensive.

Yisheng just wanted to eat, but Zhao Jixiang pulled her to Area C. In fact, this area is where most doctors and nurses dine, very few ever go to eat at public restaurants. Yisheng had a bad feeling about this, and felt that she’ll somehow meet someone here. Just thinking about her Senior and how it will cause her new colleagues to feel dissatisfied with her, she could only let her heart well up with anxiety and fear. She truly wasn’t having a good day.

She felt a pair of eyes on her, seemingly in recognition? She never thought of herself as someone who was beautiful enough to make heads turn, after all.

“She is Ye Yisheng, the one that the Head Nurse mentioned.” She heard a man say, and turns towards the table he sat.

“Really pet.i.te, ah, you don’t have any taste, and she’s too young.” He heard the man speak again.

She knew her story was brought to light. She cried heavenwards, there were no fights, yet she was already ambushed, and was reluctant as to what to do next. Distressed, she sat by the window with Zhao Jixiang in a corner, away from the right and wrong.

Zhao Jixiang patted her on the shoulder with utmost sympathy and understanding: “The meal is on me.”

Yisheng gazed at Zhao Jixiang with sparkling eyes, “Thank you.” Help yourself as you wis.h.!.+ Although it made her sick with nausea like this, she believed that at this point, there’s no other choice but to resign.

Zhao Jixiang stood up to order the food. Yisheng sitting in a corner and looking calm was occasionally turning around to glance at the crowd that was looking at her. Attention really is not a good thing.

Suddenly, the noisy dining Area C quieted down. Yis.h.i.+ng  was leisurely sipping her green tea, when the noise came to an abrupt stop. She looked up to see what had happened, but met a pair of eyes looking into her own.

Song… Song Anchen! She almost spat out the tea that was in her mouth. He was dressed in a white doctor’s uniform; fair skin, coupled with his handsome facial features, gave off a deep gentlemanly impression. But upon seeing him wearing his gold-rimmed gla.s.ses for the first time, the kind of temperament he gave off suited his medical profession, and was like a breath of fresh air.

His appearance was like that of someone from the olden days, shocking people and giving them a sense of inferiority when near him. He was looking at her, eyes seemingly perplexed, and did not know what he was thinking. As if Yisheng was surrounded by a stream of colorful lights, she couldn’t see which light that belonged to him.

Not far from her table, a nurse with starry-eyes said: “The Prince is here.”

The nurse sitting on the same table as her, knocked her on the head, saying “Wake up, you can only watch the Cold Prince at a distance.”

“Ah, what a pity, but a delicate gra.s.s.”

Yisheng quickly bowed her head, awkwardly downing her tea. She was fl.u.s.tered and her heart was beating nervously. It didn’t change a thing that she was still unable to face Song Anchen. Zhao Jixiang came back with some food in his hand, and when she saw the green tea on the table, she immediately drank the remnants. “That’s the green tea I ordered, ah!” Her loud voice sounded Area C and left an echo, which caused numerous eyes to turn towards Yisheng’s corner, hence making her the center of attention.

Yisheng felt extremely embarra.s.sed. Zhao Jixiang used her body as a blockade and whispered,”Beautiful woman, just be calm, here is the food I bought.”

“This is more like it.” Zhao Jixiang brought out the food trays, and happily tucked a piece of pork in his mouth, “You have no idea how delicious the meat is here in Area C. The pork dishes are the best, so good to eat.”

Yisheng had no appet.i.te and just chewed on a few grains of rice with her head bowed low, slowly eating.

“Hey, Yisheing, are you being shy?

“Huh?” Yisheng looked up.

“Silly, the Cold Prince looked at us.”

“Nonsense.” Yisheng hurriedly ate her grilled rice.

“Bah, don’t quibble about. No woman can resist falling for Song Anchen at first sight, but Yisheng, I advise you to resist, this cold-hearted Prince is hard to get. He is perfunctory towards woman thus turned them down from a thousand miles away, what a tragedy, ah.” Zhao Jixiang, with an extremely sorry look on her face said, “He and I both graduated at the same University. Once in University, the campus queen chased after him for five years, yet he never blinked once. In fact, it would have been good if he was an iceberg, you can say he is cool. But, it just so happens he is more approachable towards males. It’s such a sad thing, for a handsome guy to be wasted like this.”

“Why is he wasted?” Yisheng didn’t understand.

“Stupid. Everybody says that he’s in fact…”

Yisheng listened intently.

“He’s GAY!”

“Pfft!” Yisheng spat out a mouthful of food, spraying it all over on Zhao Jixiang’s face. She froze for a moment, then without warning, screamed frantically while covering her face and ran to the bathroom. At this, curious eyes shot towards her direction.

She gave out an awkward hollow laugh, unfortunately Song Anchen’s eyes were on her once more. Her childhood sweetheart was GAY? She suddenly s.h.i.+vered, but… like… well, there’s nothing else to say.

“Yisheng?” Suddenly, the door opened, revealing several doctors. The tallest of all the doctors, called out. At this time she was the center of attention again, and then after calling her out, he walked towards her.

Her glamorous Senior…

Yan Heng, oblivious, just continued moving forward with a smile on his face.

Yisheng felt faint, as if the ears of Our Lady of Mercy, Sevilla Light… she wanted to hit the tofu to death.
