CSWH Chapter 102: Quiet Talk – A Guard's Job

"Kuroitsu-san, it seems that a rather strange guest has come but……what should we do?"

"What kind of guest?"

"They said that they came to deliver a letter to the guest staying at this inn. However, this inn has been fully booked out by us, and they have no name for the person corresponding to us. The manager of the inn is handling them, but no matter how much he explains, they keep saying 'he should be here' and won't back down, so it's quite troubling."

"I see. So, where is this rare guest?"

"At the entrance."

"I see. Thanks for the report."

After receiving my subordinate's report, I stood up and headed to the entranceway. 

……right now, it has been made so that Romel-sama is bedridden from illness.

The cause of it was fatigue from his travels.

I also do not know the reason why he had to put up such a front.

It was something that I didn't need to know.

……because what I needed to prioritize was the perfect fulfillment of my a.s.signed duties.

Romel-sama did not allow anyone to come close to him, and was always sitting in his chair, deep in thought.

"My apologies, but we are the only ones staying at this inn. Do excuse me, but have you mistaken which inn you are looking for?"

Hearing my words, the guest displayed a doubtful expression.

"This is the Faboma inn. Could it be that you've mistaken it for the Falima inn?"

And then, after hearing my following words, the guest appeared to think for a moment before nodding in understanding.

"That may be the case…….I'm so sorry for the ruckus. On that note, are all of you travellers or something?"

"……well, something like that."

"I see. No wonder why you looked so fit…….Thank you for explaining things to me so kindly."

Thud, the guest struck my chest lightly in a friendly manner and left.

"My deepest apologies, dear guest, for causing such trouble……"

The innkeeper apologetically called out to me from across the counter.

"No, it's alright. I also almost mistook which inn to go to before, so I remember it well."

"That's only natural……two generations ago, two brothers each opened their own name, and they even named their inns in a similar manner at the time. Since then, even though it was found to be very confusing so they kept thinking about changing it again and again, in the end they became attached to the names and left it as it was."

"Haha……once you become attached to it, it is indeed hard to change. Well then, with this I'll excuse myself."

Then, leaving the lobby, I headed towards Romel-sama with a paper clenched in my hand.

The truth was, I had previously heard of the possibility of that sort of guest appearing from Alf-san before he left.

I had also heard of how to handle such a guest.

And so, I did everything as instructed…….there was no problem with that.

The problem was that now I'd have to call out to that Romel-sama, who was cloaked in that terribly frightening atmosphere.

"……um, Romel-sama."

That being said, I could not run away from it, so I readied myself and called out to Romel-sama.

"……what is it? Did someone come?"

With his brow still furrowed, Romel-sama responded without turning his gaze my way.

"Y-Yes. It was like how Alf-san said they would."

"I see…….then, could you give me what that person left with you?"

Actually, the guest from earlier was someone prepared by Alf-san.

They worked under Alf-san, and were active in Rinmel Princ.i.p.ality, where we currently were.

There was no way they could openly deliver the information obtained from their infiltration, but on the off chance that Alf-san himself could not move to receive the information, Alf-san had informed both me and his informants on how to deliver the information beforehand.

Following that method, that guest visited the inn, and spoke his predetermined lines as instructed.

All of my replies were also predetermined by Alf-san's orders.

……in other words, the earlier conversation was all a code.

And, since I safely managed to give the appropriate pa.s.sword, the guest handed me the memo listing the information.

It was when they lightly struck my chest.

After Romel-sama received the paper from me, he stared as though he was going to bore a hole through it.
