To all of the restaurant owners, cooks, waitresses, waiters, dishwashers, purveyors, and delivery folks who have worked, played, and "jammed or improvised" along with me in many a commercial kitchen, I am truly thankful to have shared in the experience of co-creating wholesome food, growing ourselves, and feeding the world! As professionals, when asked, they have also volunteered their skills, time, and energy for good causes, event after event, festival after festival, year after year and I am deeply grateful.

My appreciation goes out to Jane Militich, Bob Wilson, Richard Ware, Charlie Cascio, John Blunt, Marla Bell, Narayana, Jack-of-all-trades, Lolly Fa.s.sett, Holly Fa.s.sett, Barbara Woyt, Grace and Bob Swanson, Amigo Bob, Michele Guthrie, Bunny Gries, Katee Armstrong, Rachel Fann, Rollie Ogden, Jennifer Dean, Bill Herr, Allan Mello, Hidden Mountain, Andrea Ahlgren-s.h.i.+rley, Robin Ahlgren, Liam McDermott, Chloe Conger, and Shani Cranston-I have learned something special from each of you.

Being in the kitchen with friends and family is one of my favorite things-and there is no place like home. Many of my loved ones are excellent cooks who have freely shared their wisdom and experience, inspiring me to stretch myself in new ways. A heartfelt thanks to Rosemary Fosse, Sylvia Burnside, Joshua Wilson, Crystal Gries, Tafay Lindeman, Alia Pratt, Peggy and d.i.c.k Horan, Eric and Ruth Jensen, Copperwoman, Martine Algiers, Ginna Bell-Bragg, Alicia Bay Laurel, Sarah Bly, Kate Healey, Lygia Chappellet, Torre Forrest, Jeannie Ford, Emily Mann, Wing Hodas, and Lizzy Bechtold. Being in the kitchen with each of you has truly been a blessing. I look forward to the many gatherings, holidays, and celebrations to come.

Growing food, especially for a large family, takes a lot of work, skill, water, and patience. To supplement the offerings from my own garden, I rely on local farmers markets. Purchasing something fresh and flavorful from each of my favorite vendors is an outing I always look forward to. To Steve, Syndey, Michael, Gary, Jack, Maria and Osias, Loretta, Cristina, Ester, Tom, Dave, Pearl, Jay, Ross, Claudia, Logan, Diego, s.h.i.+rley, Ben, and all the other wonderful organic farmers on the central California coast and in Baja California Sur, my deepest thanks-keep on growing!

I would like to give special appreciation to Nani Steele for all her encouragement, constructive feedback, and fabulous food styling. From the beginning of this project, her loving kindness and expertise has helped me transform the challenging process of writing a book into a wonderful new journey. Keep on dreaming, writing, and inspiring others with your bright light and sweet smile.

The photos Kodiak Greenwood took for this book are simply amazing. I have known him since birth, and it has been an honor to watch him grow and develop this special talent. Together we went to several farmers markets and numerous neighborhood gardens as well as home and commercial kitchens to set up the shots. He skillfully transformed beautiful images into art, and the ma.n.u.script came to life. I am grateful to have these extraordinary photographs woven throughout this book.

I would like to thank Gibbs Smith, Hollie Keith, Mich.e.l.le Branson, and all the folks at Gibbs Smith for their trust, support, and patience. Without your interest and generosity, this book would have never been written. I have learned much throughout the process, while growing in unimaginable ways, and I am truly grateful.

To my parents, Rosemary Fosse and Bob Burnside, your understanding, support, and faith has given me the courage to spread my wings and embrace this wonderful life I've been given, thanks again.

And to my family, Bill, Josh, Crystal, Nathaniel, Theron, Tafay, Tom, Ivan, Athena, Ethan, Tanith, Weston, and Rayden, words can not convey my grat.i.tude for your caring and support while I worked my way through visioning, writing, recipe testing, and editing this project. I give thanks for the life we share and the love that grows in my heart for you all each and every day.
