Col. Samuel W. Durham stated that Mr. Bottorf was accidentally killed in office. A gentleman from Putnam towns.h.i.+p by the name of c.o.x was in the county surveyor's office on business, and as was frequent in those days, carried a musket which he leaned up in the corner of the door and door frame. The opening of the door threw the gun on the floor, and it was discharged, wounding Mr. Bottorf in the heel. The wound was not considered serious but blood poisoning set in and death resulted.
