"I could...but that would be wrong. I said I would leave it your choice to stay, Josia."
In that moment Josia knew just how much love he had for her.
She'd seen what kind of life he led...the man had special jets in his bathtub to satisfy his pa.s.sion, and drank artificial blood that he didn't like. She also knew how lonely he was, the long years he'd spent with only the company of his computer. For a long time he'd searched for someone like her. She'd felt his joy in being with her.
And yet, if she wished it he would set her free. That's how much he loved her.
"Dimitri, you promised you could never separate me from someone I love." His eyes lost their sleepiness and grew watchful. "I said that, yes."
She couldn't resist teasing him a little. Josia allowed herself a heartfelt sigh and felt Dimitri tense as if expecting bad news.
"Well, I guess that means you'll have to keep me. I love you too much be separated from you. But on one condition only."
She opened her mind to him for a moment so he would know what that condition was.
Dimitri sat up and knelt next to her. His hand seemed to sweat as he took hers. "Josia, would you be my bride?"
After a lifetime without choices, finally someone had given her the one she wanted most. "Yes, Dimitri, I will."
He whooped and swept her up in his arms, kissing her soundly.
"I'm the luckiest Dark-pilot alive!"
"Of course you are," Arthur interrupted, a touch of smugness in his tone. "I've said that all along-after all, you've had me for decades. Now, shall I make plans for the wedding this evening?"
"There is just my sister..."
"Nonsense," Arthur said, his tone forbidding any argument.
"It's not every day a Dark-pilot takes a bride-the entire colony must be invited." A deep hum erupted from the cabin walls as the computer spun into high gear. "There is food, drinks, decorations...we must have a cake with an artiheme slice for Dimitri. Oh, and a wedding gown, something gloriously s.e.xy! So much to do... I'll take care of all the preparations...you two rest well!" There was an abrupt squawk and then silence.
Laughing, Dimitri collapsed back onto his pillow and drew a suddenly exhausted Josia into his arms. "I don't think I've ever heard Arthur so happy. He'll spend the whole day setting up for the wedding and the next year complaining about how hard he worked. Rest well, Josia...you're going to need it."
She yawned. "You rest well, too, Dimitri. I love you."
One last thought slipped through their link as the sunrise swept his body into sleep. I love you too, Dark-pilot's bride.
